This is the pickup that started it all. Many of the classic Rock guitar sounds of the 70's and 80's were produced by a Super Distortion and a raging tube amp. But don't confuse classic with outdated. Diverse artists from Al DiMeola, Frank Gambale, and Vinnie Moore to Metal veterans Iron Maiden and Ace Frehley have chosen the Super Distortion as an integral part of their personal sound.

It has a smooth, almost voice-like quality and that intangible swell to the notes after attack. It possesses vintage output and breathes freely with an open, warm character. Played flat-out through a non-master volume tube amp, the PAF re-creates the deep character of the great plug-in, turn-up and wail school of tone. Modern potting techniques and tight, consistent winding eliminates squeal and microphonics common to the originals.

The PAF Pro® has the most transparent sound of the group of Modern Classic Humbuckers. That's not to say there isn't plenty of aggressive chunk in the bottom-end, because there is a spike in the mid - range that gives the pickup a subtle aw vowel sound, like a wah-wah pedal stopped in the middle. It adds drive to the high note bends and grind to notes on the low E string. The transparency of its sound lets the PAF Pro® cut through heavy processing. Other pickups get lost in the mud of the effects chain. The PAF Pro® is EQ'd to enhance, not fight, all the gain and processing it's sent through. The high-end is tweaked in a way that lets the pickup's character stand out regardless of how intense the situation gets. The sound of a PAF Pro® combined with a single-coil pickup in the middle position adds the versatility of the traditional glassy twang to any guitar. Using a five-way pickup switch and backing off on the guitar's volume control gives you a range of tone from over the top to slashing funk rhythm. Recommended For : The PAF Pro® is a dependable choice right across the board - neck and bridge positions, solid-body, semi-hollow and hollow body guitars are equally effective uses. Tech Talk : This is a great building block pickup, because it's effective in many different situations. Try it in the neck position with a hotter bridge pickup - anything from a Norton® to a Super Distortion® will create a calibrated two-humbucker match. As a bridge pickup, it's reall...

The PAF Joe a neck pickup that DiMarzio developed for Joe Satriani. Joe wanted a neck position humbucker that combines the best qualities of the DiMarzio PAF Pro with those of a late '50s Gibson humbucker. Joe described this tone as being "tubular". Through the use of Virtual Vintage technology, clear-sounding low frequencies are blended with warm-sounding mids and high frequencies, which makes the PAF Joe equally good for chords and single notes. It was first used by Joe throughout the 2003 G3 tour. Color: Black. Recommended For: All positions, solid, semi-solid and hollow-body electric guitars. Tech Talk: What does ?tubular? mean? In this case, it means making low notes "speak" more clearly while giving high notes a rounder voicing. This accomplishes two goals: chords have better definition, and single notes at higher fret positions remain warm-sounding rather than getting thinner. The PAF Joe has slightly less power than the PAF Pro. It balances well with bridge pickups like the PAF Pro, FRED, Breed neck model, Air Norton and Norton. Specifications: Wiring: Standard four conductor Magnet: Ceramic Output: 272mV DC Resistance: 8.26 Kohm

Drawing upon the steely, yet woody-sounding tonality of several pickups from the early 60s, DiMarzio has produced a modern version of these vintage gems with no hum and less magnet pull. DiMarzio has been working on serious vintage single-coil design with no hum for eight years, with the goal of capturing the best qualities of guitar pickups from the 1950s and early 60s. The DP416 Area 61 succeeds admirably, is good in all three positions, and is a perfect bridge pickup with a pair of Area 58s if you want to go all the way from Nashville to Texas in one guitar. Tech Talk: Over the last 10 years DiMarzio received hundreds of requests from guitarists asking for the Texas blues sound. This sound is centered on single-coils from the early 1960s, but it's also based on heavy strings and strong hands. The Area 61 captures the tonal bedrock this sound is based on. Like the Area 58, the Area 61 really responds to different pick attacks: played hard, it sounds louder and tougher than you

Yngwie wanted his favorite pickups, the HS-3 with a vintage magnet stagger. At DiMarzio, what Yngwie wants, Yngwie gets. Now, you can get it, too. (Yngwie swears by the unique sound of the YJM? pickup.) Recommended For : All positions. Tech Talk : Works well in all 3 positions for slightly warmer than usual Strat sound. The vintage 50's magnet stagger is a subtle change from the standard HS-3?. It alters the overall tonal balance so there's a little more clarity and string definition, and highs cut through, particularly higher up the neck. Most recently, Yngwie has been using the YJM? in the middle and neck position, with the HS-3? in the bridge position.

DiMarzio modeled their Area '58 after one of the most celebrated Strat pickups from 1958, with two major differences. The Area '58 has way less magnet pull, and virtually no hum. It's recommended for neck and middle, and can also be used in the bridge position. A great pickup is clear and bright, but not thin-sounding. A great one makes the sound jump out of the amp when you pick hard and drop way down when you play softly, and the tone varies when the string is picked at different spots. DiMarzio designed the Area '58 to fit this profile exactly. Tech Talk: The Area '58 has obvious similarities to the Virtual Vintage 2.1 it replaces, but there are several non-visible performance factors that have changed. Dynamic range and string definition are greatly increased, leading to improvements in both clean chord-playing and overdriven soloing. The '58 is very sensitive to small height adjustment differences: close to the strings produces a fatter, slightly compressed

Joe Satriani asked us for a hotter and bigger version of the Fred for his new Ibanez guitar. The new Mo' Joe has more power than the Fred, but it doesn't sacrifice the clarity, dynamics or the unique guitar. The new Mo' Joe has more power than the Fred, but it doesn't sacrifice the clarity, dynamic or the unique harmonics that made the Fred famous. The Mo' Joe in the bridge position is a perfect match for the PAF Joe in the neck position. The combination delivers great versatility and control from rhythms to solos.

Although Eric Johnson is best known as a Strat player, he has always played humbucker-equipped guitars as well. After getting a new 1959 Les Paul re-issue, Eric asked DiMarzio if it could be made to sound like an old Gretsch Country Gentleman guitar, and they said, ?No problem!? The pickups they designed are exact replacements for standard, full size humbuckers. They are bright with great presence without sounding thin. When Eric tried them, he said they were almost as clear-sounding as Strat pickups, and he was surprised at how well they sounded with heavy distortion, because no matter how overdriven the sound, it did not become muddy. Color: Black Recommended For: All positions, solid, semi-solid and hollow-body electric guitars Tech Talk: If you look at the DC Resistance specs for these pickups, you will see they?re very similar to PAF-style models. However, their performance is very different in two important areas. They have less power and much more treble response than "vintage" humbuckers. In fact, treble response is comparable to that of typical single-coils, but since bass response is still very solid, the EJ Custom isn?t thin-sounding. It?s outstanding for chords and fingerpicking, and has exceptional definition for soloing, even with extreme amounts of distortion. Specifications: Wiring: Standard four conductor Magnet: Alnico 5 Output: 200 mV DC Resistance: 7.85 Kohm

This is the neck pickup that breaks all the rules. It's fat and warm, but not muddy. It's hot, but not distorted. It's even got cool harmonics. The patent applied for magnetic structure reduces string-pull, so sustain is improved, and pick attack and dynamics are tremendously controllable and expressive. Combine the Air Norton with a Tone Zone in the bridge position for a perfect blend of power and tone.

The difference between a vintage Strat bridge pickup sound and a classic Broadcaster or Tele tone is mostly a matter of attack and definition - the Strat stings and screams, while the Tele punches and sings. DiMarzio thought it would be neat to have a Strat pickup that does both, and this is it. The punch comes from the bottom-loaded Power Plate, the sting from custom coil-winding and the Blue Velvet magnet stagger, and a unique mid-range "growl" that's a result of a hand-calibrated magnet structure. Try a Red Velvet bridge pickup with a pair of Blue Velvet pickups for a sound that's both classic and new.Recommended for all positions. Tech Talk: One of the obvious effects of mounting a plate on the bottom of a pickup is to boost the magnetic field. DiMarzio wanted the bigger sound that the plate provides, but they didn't want any increased magnet-pull, so they calibrate the magnetic field of every Red Velvet after it's assembled. The Red Velvet was originally
