Featuring spectacular special effects set amidst the backdrop of one of the most tragic events of the 20th century, James Cameron's award-winning TITANIC stands as one of the greatest Hollywood spectaculars of all time. Beginning with an undersea expedition in the 1990s, in which scuba divers are searching the sunken ship for lost relics, a painting of young Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) is found. This triggers a flashback to the young woman's story as it happened on the doomed Titanic. Rose is a daughter of privilege on her way to be married to an arrogant but wealthy young man (Billy Zane). Despairing, Rose finds herself falling in love with Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a carefree and poor young artist who is also aboard. When the great ship strikes an iceberg and begins to sink, Rose and Jack have only each other as their world falls apart around them. Director James Cameron spared no expense in bringing his simple yet powerful love story to life, building a 90% scale model of the ship, fussing over the tiniest details, and ultimately spending some $200 million dollars. A worldwide smash, TITANIC received fourteen Academy Award nominations and 11 wins, including Best Picture. Despite all the lavish sets and special effects, the film would be nothing without the emotional core provided by stars Winslet and DiCaprio, who give star making performances as the tragic young lovers.

Television producer extraordinaire Aaron Spelling launched a pop-culture phenomenon with his 1990s teen soap opera BEVERLY HILLS 90210, a landmark series that not only set the standard for '90s teen culture, but singlehandedly wrote the template for later shows like DAWSON'S CREEK and THE O.C. Created by Darren Star, the glitzy series chronicled the coming-of-age dramas of Minnesota siblings Brandon (Jason Priestley) and Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) as they adjusted to their new lives in the affluent environs of the zip code of the title, where they attended the fictional West Beverly High with a tight-knit group of teenage friends: goodnatured jock Steve Sanders (Ian Ziering); naive virgin Donna Martin (Tori Spelling); aspiring DJ David Silver (Brian Austin Green); blonde siren Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth); and troubled bad-boy Dylan McKay (Luke Perry). Like DEGRASSI, the series attempted social commentary by crafting storylines featuring a wide range of issues affecting '90s teens, including alcoholism, drug abuse, sex, and depression. This sixth season continues the social drama and love affairs as the privileged pals brave the pressures of the adult world--including cocaine, pregnancy, and, for Dylan, a hitman.

A teenaged girl (Amber Tamblyn) finds herself approached week after week by all sorts of different people--each claiming to be God delivering instructions for her next mission. Joan's police chief father (Joe Mantegna of THE RAT PACK) and distracted mother (Oscar-winner Mary Steenburgen of MELVIN AND HOWARD) know nothing about their daughter's odd plight, nor do her siblings or classmates, and the girl grapples alone with what may be encroaching insanity as she fulfills her mysterious assignments. A surprisingly strong cast and interesting writing make this offbeat television series quite involving and absorbing. The entire first season (23 episodes) of this remarkable weekly drama appears in this compilation.

There's no eye-gouging, no biting, and no crotch shots allowed, but everything else goes in NEVER BACK DOWN, an invigorating high school sports/ultimate backyard fighting hybrid. Sean Faris plays Jake, the new kid (with a troubled past) who butts heads with rich alpha-male bully Ryan (Cam Gigandet, channeling Brad Pitt in FIGHT CLUB) at Miami High. Amber Heard plays Baja, the hot blonde who tricks Jake into attending a combination pool party/fight club held at Ryan's MTV cribs-style mansion. Jake doesn't want to fight at first but gets goaded into a blind rage and then gets his butt kicked. Enter Djimon Hounsou as the local fighting instructor who teaches Jake some self-discipline (and how to throw a cement block at the camera from 30 paces). Director Jeff Wadlow clearly harbors nostalgia for the halcyon days of TOP GUN and FLASHDANCE; the emo-rock-scored training montages flow as free as Baja's blonde hair during her frequent slow-motion walks down the hall. Jake even has a wisecracking slacker cameraman sidekick (Evan Peters) who uploads all the fights to the internet. Concerned parents will be glad to know there's not much drinking or kissing, and no matter how hard the punches and roundhouse kicks may be, everybody gets to keep their teeth. Special acting shout-out to Wyatt Smith as Jake's tennis-prodigy kid brother and Leslie Hope as their stressed-out single mom.

Nicolas Cage stars as Jack Campbell, a career-driven workaholic who has everything: an exciting job, a Ferarri, a closetful of Zegna suits, and the attention of any woman he wants. His life changes when, after working a full day on Christmas Eve, he intervenes in a convenience store holdup. The apparent criminal, Cash (Cheadle), speaks to Jack in epigrams about his satisfaction with life. When Jack wakes up the next day, he's suddenly living in a New Jersey suburb, where he's married to his college sweetheart (Leoni) and is the father of two children. At first he is aghast, but Jack soon warms to his new life even though he knows that it cannot last. Unabashedly sentimental, the film is also a great comedy, as Cage gives a superb performance that makes the most of his character's obvious disgust with his suburban surroundings and even allows for a few moments of hysterics reminiscent of VAMPIRE'S KISS. Filled with great performances (notably Ms. Leoni's role as Jack's wife), inspired comedy, and a premise that suggests a slightly darker version of classics like A CHRISTMAS CAROL and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, THE FAMILY MAN is an affecting and entertaining holiday film.

Premonition [Blu-ray Disc]

Sandra Bullock (CRASH, MISS CONGENIALITY) stars as a housewife troubled by a tragic premonition in Mennan Yapo's thriller. Linda Hanson's life revolves around her beloved daughters (Shyann McClure and Courtney Taylor Burness) and her husband, Jim (Julian McMahon, CHARMED). The familiar, picture-perfect terrain of her existence is abruptly shattered when she is informed that Jim has died in a gruesome car accident, and Linda spends the rest of the day in shock. When she awakes the next morning to find Jim calmly eating breakfast in the kitchen, however, she is even more disturbed. As the week progresses, Linda wakes up to find Jim alive again or dead again in an increasingly complex pattern that she struggles to make sense of. Linda realizes she's in the midst of a premonition and decides she must try to save Jim, but when she finds out he might have been cheating on her, her resolve is seriously tested. PREMONITION should appeal to fans of Christopher Nolan's MEMENTO and M. Night Shyamalan's THE SIXTH SENSE, as it too presents an intriguing puzzle for the audience to solve. Despite a few plot holes, the film provides an interesting take on the mutability of time. The notion of a mysterious unknown beneath the mundanity of everyday life is attractive, and the exploration of time as twistable--rather than linear--is fascinating. Nia Long (ALFIE) plays Linda's best friend, and Amber Valetta (HITCH) plays the other woman in Jim's life.

Stephanie Daley [DVD]

In STEPHANIE DALEY, Amber Tamblyn and Tilda Swinton turn in remarkable performances as a young girl accused of murdering her infant and the pregnant forensic psychologist assigned to her case. When Stephanie is found trailing blood in the snow on a high school ski trip, the media quickly latches onto the story, labeling her the "Ski Mom." While evaluating 16-year-old Stephanie before the criminal trial, 40-year-old Lydie (Swinton) is also grappling with worries over her own troubled pregnancy. Having given birth to a stillborn years before, Lydie is still coming to terms with what that loss meant for her and her marriage to an increasingly distant husband (Timothy Hutton). The film unfolds in a nonlinear way, with scenes of the two women's discussions opening up to flashbacks of the months preceding the baby's supposedly unexpected birth (and death), and to scenes from each woman's current situation. What makes STEPHANIE DALEY so moving is how ordinary the title character is. Like so many adolescent girls, Stephanie is smart, shy, and when it comes to the adult world of sex, dangerously naive. Stephanie adamantly denies that she killed her baby, and explains the events of the previous year with a sadness and resignation that speak of so many female adolescent experiences. In a scene that depicts Stephanie's first sexual encounter, director Hilary Brougher perfectly captures that moment when good reason gives way to peer pressure, youthful curiosity, and a lack of confidence. Where such an experience would leave any girl feeling used and disappointed, it leaves Stephanie with a problem so great she can't even admit it until it's too late. The film uses graphic scenes powerfully, and while never passing judgment on its characters, raises important issues about a woman's right to choose and about womanhood itself.
