To Have and Have Not
A 40-something Humphrey Bogart and a novice named Lauren Bacall might have seemed like an odd pairing on paper, but their chemistry in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT ignites the screen. Howard Hawks directs this classic about a jaded American fisherman (Bogart) who risks his life to help a group of French freedom fighters and a sultry young woman (Bacall) with whom he falls in love. The fascinating setting (Vichy-controlled Martinique during the Second World War), the source material (Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel), and a screenplay co-written by a literary master (William Faulkner) all take a backseat to the on- and off-screen romance between the two legends. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is perhaps most memorable for the 19-year-old Bacall seducing Bogart (and audiences) with her lesson on whistling.
Dark Victory
Bette Davis soars in this superb, soapy starring vehicle, chauffeur-driven by director Edmund Goulding (THE GREAT LIE, GRAND HOTEL). A flighty, energetic socialite with a passion for champagne and country living, Judith (Davis) won't admit there's something wrong with her vision until she almost dies in a horse jumping accident. When a handsome doctor (George Brent) examines her, he discovers a rare and incurable brain disease. They fall in love and get married, determined to make every last moment count, aware that she might pass on at any time. A batch of familiar faces helps make these last few months as happy as possible: Geraldine Fitzgerald, terrific as Judith's friend and secretary; Humphrey Bogart, sporting an occasional Irish brogue as a horse trainer; and Ronald Reagan, slurring up a storm as Judith's boozy pal. Although the men acquit themselves nicely, the film belongs to the women, and Davis and Fitzgerald are both first-rate in this typically tough and lovely Warner Brothers tear-jerker.
Warner Gangsters Collection - Volume 3 [DVD]
Bogart, Cagney, and Robinson--their names are synonymous with hard-boiled detectives, gangsters, and the noir films of the 1930s. Together they created some of Hollywood's greatest moments. And while there were many studios pumping out one standard crime thriller after the next, the Warner Brothers' were top dog. The third volume of this comprehensive series includes six classic films that represent some of the best of Warner's noir films. PICTURE SNATCHER, LADY KILLER, SMART MONEY, THE MAYOR OF HELL, BLACK LEGION, and BROTHER ORCHID are all gritty tough-guy vehicles, featuring not only the greatest icons of the genre, but some of the moodiest cinematography and most memorable lines of dialogue ever produced.
Warner Gangsters Collection - Volume 2 [DVD]
Tough guys, dames, and derringers all figure in the collection of gangster films from Warner Bros. James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson are among the classic stars that appear in these shadowy tales of crime and punishment: BULLETS OR BALLOTS, CITY FOR CONQUEST, EACH DAWN I DIE, "G" MEN, SAN QUENTIN, and A SLIGHT CASE OF MURDER. Please see individual titles for complete synopsis information.
Casablanca (2 Disc Set Ultimate Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray Disc]
World War II Morocco springs to life in Michael Curtiz's (THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY) classic love story. Colorful characters abound in Casablanca, a waiting room for Europeans trying to escape Hitler's war-torn Europe. Humphrey Bogart plays Richard "Rick" Blaine, a cynical but good-hearted American whose café is the gathering place for everyone from the French Police to the black market to the Nazis. When his long-lost love, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), surfaces in Casablanca with her Resistance leader husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), Rick is pulled into both a love triangle and a web of political intrigue. Ilsa and Victor need to escape from Casablanca, and Rick may be the only one who can help them. The question is, will he? Top-notch performances include Claude Rains as the chief of the French police and the major authority figure in Unoccupied France, Peter Lorre as the doomed Senor Ugarte, Sydney Greenstreet as Senor Ferrari, and Dooley Wilson as Rick's loyal friend and the café's pianist, Sam. The mesmerizing musical score, by Max Steiner, along with the well-structured plot, flawless acting, and unforgettable dialogue makes this one of the best films of all time.
The Petrified Forest [DVD]
This heartfelt drama about a gangster on the run is the film for which Humphrey Bogart first received wide-scale recognition. Bogie and costar Leslie Howard were both brought on board after appearing in the successful stage play by Pulitzer prize-winner Robert E. Sherwood. Director Archie Mayo follows the original closely to create a fast-paced and gripping suspense drama with existential motifs. Leslie Howard plays a perfect gentleman--a lonely intellectual in search of meaning. When he lands in a deserted café, he finds what he's looking for in the form of young Bette Davis, whose character yearns for the artistic climate of gay Paris. But both Howard and Davis are in for a bumpy ride when dangerous gangster played by Bogart takes over, holding up the joint at gunpoint. The small group of hostages take turns telling their tales, fearing death, while Bogie plots to reunite with his gang and his girl. Few films in history can stand up to THE PETRIFIED FOREST, which combines the words of literary giant Robert E. Sherwood with the sizzling performances of Howard, Davis, and Bogart.
Casablanca
Dead End [DVD]
New York City; the depression. The terraces of the great new apartments of the rich look down into the windows of the tenement poor. A gang of teenagers amuse themselves diving in the river and taunting the son of a rich family. Dave (Joel McCrea) helps Drina (Sylvia Sidney) as she looks after her bother, Tommy (Billy Halop), who is one of the gang. Gangster Baby Face Martin (Humphry Bogart) returns to his old home--but is rejected by his mother (Marjorie Main). Then Martin hatches a plan to make his visit worthwhile. Like the play it is based on, DEAD END is dominated by its tenement set. Director William Wyler and director of photography Gregg Toland emphasize the contrast between the rich family and the poor tenement dwellers. Although scriptwriter Lillian Hellman had to soften Sidney Kingsley's play, the movie's criticism of the social order is still trenchant. DEAD END is notable for its period detail--Dave rests his arms on a pillow while entertaining himself looking out his window; a policeman beats his baton on the sidewalk to call for help. And it contains a vivid vignette from Claire Trevor as Francey, the girl Martin left behind.
Barefoot Contessa
In one of the last films before his death in 1957, Humphrey Bogart plays washed-up film director Harry Dawes, who sees another chance at success when he meets Spanish dancer Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner) and recognizes her star potential. Harry's willingness to let Maria keep her independence, and his steadfast character, wins him her undying friendship; the two weather the Hollywood seas, made stormy by Maria's own tempestuous spirit and the greedy nature of the film business. Maria's final break from Hollywood throws her into the arms of a Prince Charming whose secrets lead her down a destructive path. Impatience with Hollywood is evident in every line of director-writer Joseph L. Mankiewicz's dialogue (as in the unforgettable ALL ABOUT EVE), but he carefully plants the seeds of Maria's decline in her character rather than simplistically painting her fate as a reaction to fame. Bogart, in an role atypical for him of platonic friend to his female costar, is the touchstone of the movie and its most sympathetic character, while Gardner's eyes snap with passion as she searches for her fairy-tale ending.
Angels with Dirty Faces [DVD]
Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA) directs James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Pat O'Brien in one of the greatest gangster melodramas made during the Hollywood studio era. William "Rocky" Sullivan (Cagney) and Jerry Connolly (O'Brien), partners in mischief as boys, are separated when only Jerry is fast enough to get away from the cops after the duo steals fountain pens from a railroad car. Rocky, refusing to give the name of his friend, is sent off to a reform school where he falls under the influence of criminal elements. The grown-up Rocky's triumphant return to the neighborhood complicates the efforts of Jerry, now a parish priest, to keep a local group of boys (the Dead End Kids) out of trouble. When the gang begins to idolize Rocky, Connolly fears his good works may come to nothing. Meanwhile, Rocky vies for control of the criminal rackets in the neighborhood with mob boss Mac Keefer (George Bancroft) and a corrupt, double-crossing lawyer, James Frazier (Bogart). Curtiz's taut, suspenseful, yet suprisingly sensitive handling of the gritty urban morality play turned ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES into the first unqualified masterpiece of his stunningly prolific career. The archetypal gangster thriller, brimming with the magnetism and explosive dramatic energy supplied by the three male leads, was nominated for three Academy Award Nominations: Best Director, Best Actor (Cagney), and Best Original Story.
Key Largo
A notorious gangster (Edward G. Robinson) holds the residents of a hotel hostage during a tropical storm. This captivating cinematic adaptation of the play by Maxwell Anderson won an Academy Award for Claire Trevor's supporting role.
Big Sleep
Chandler's first novel introduced private detective Philip Marlowe, and THE BIG SLEEP set the standard for private detective movies. Down-at-the-heels private eye Marlowe gets the assignment to clean up after the daughters of a dying millionaire, but dead people have a nasty habit of trailing in their wake. The famously tortuous story line (Hawks supposedly asked Chandler to clarify a plot point about the murder of the family chauffeur; the novelist hadn't a clue as to who did the deed) seems beside the point when Bogart and Bacall are onscreen. The final release was recut to include more of their scenes together. A must! Remade in 1978.
Bogie & Bacall: The Signature Collection
Four films starring legendary screen icons Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall are gathered together for this collection. The titles included are THE BIG SLEEP, DARK PASSAGE, KEY LARGO, and TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. Please see individual titles for synopsis information.
Casablanca (3-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition) [DVD]
San Quentin [DVD]
Dark Passage
Bogart and Bacall headline a wild tale of an escapee from San Quentin who has his face surgically altered to allow him the freedom to find his wife's murderer. Now a man without a past, he meets a sultry stranger willing to put him up until his face heals and they can solve the mystery.
Dead Reckoning [DVD]
Humphrey Bogart stars as Rip Murdock, a World War II veteran ensnared in a web of crime and conspiracy when his best friend, Johnny Drake (William Prince), disappears en route to Washington, D.C., to receive a war medal. Murdock follows the trail to Drake's hometown in the Deep South, where he finds his friend's body burned beyond recognition at the local morgue. Murdock, determined to find the murderer, begins his own investigation but soon falls for Drake's ex-girlfriend, femme fatale Cory Chandler (Lizabeth Scott). When Murdock finds his first lead dead in his own hotel room, he begins to suspect that Chandler may be a lot more than just a local singer. Directed by acclaimed veteran John Cromwell (SO ENDS OUR NIGHT, ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS), DEAD RECKONING provides sharp and merciless suspense. The dark, winding plot twists in this classic film noir are held together and energized throughout by Bogart's commanding, inimitable screen presence and his paradoxically expressive, world-weary deadpan.
They Drive by Night [DVD]
A superb drama dealing with the heroic efforts of two brothers who maintain a free-lance truck driving business against a brace of angry mob bosses. Once these crooked "businessmen" find out independent operators are invading their turf, they plan to overthrow their business--by literally running them off the road.
The Desperate Hours [DVD]
Director William Wyler's tense crime drama is set in a quiet midwestern town. In the middle of a summer's day, three escaped convicts--Glen (Humphrey Bogart), his brother Hal (Dewey Martin), and the threatening Sam (Robert Middleton)--blunder into a suburban home. There they confront Eleanor Hilliard (Martha Scott). Soon the rest of Eleanor's family return--first her accountant husband, Dan (Fredric March), and daughter, Cindy (Mary Murphy), then her young son, Ralphie (Richard Eyer). To the family's horror, the convicts decide to stay in their home until Glen's girl arrives with help. The police, led by Deputy Bard (Arthur Kennedy), have lost the trail of the convicts. Everyone waits: the convicts for help, the Hilliards for the convicts to leave, and the police for them to reappear. Then Glen's girl runs into trouble. Using his trademark long takes and claustrophobically confining most of the action to the beleaguered Hilliards's home, Wyler and veteran director of photography Lee Garmes create an atmosphere of tension. At first it seems the Hilliards will be rescued if the police discover the whereabouts of the convicts. Then it becomes clear that things will get much worse for the family if the police do arrive.
Enforcer
Told in a series of flashbacks, this tense, moody film noir drama concerns the attempts of district attorney Bogart to crack a ring of hired killers. Just as victory is at hand, the key witness dies and the DA, after four years on the case, must start again from square one. Painstakingly retracing the murderers' gruesome steps, the dedicated DA searches for the necessary evidence with which to convict the gang leader. Based on the Murder, Inc. trials.
In a Lonely Place [DVD]
Just when hotheaded Hollywood screenwriter Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart) begins a romance with his neighbor Laurel (Gloria Graham), the police begin to suspect him of murdering a woman he only briefly knew. Laurel believes in Dixon's innocence, but his alibi doesn't wash with the police. As the cops continue to pressure Dixon, the lovebirds' relationship begins to crumble--nor does Dixon's increasing hot-tempered behavior help matters. Soon, Laurel begins to suspect that the police may be right after all...Nicholas Ray's classic, brooding film noir showcases an uncharacteristically vulnerable Bogart and delivers a sharp surprise ending that is one of the most tragic in cinema history.
