The Player [DVD]
Description:
Robert Altman's adaptation of Michael Tolkin's novel gives the notorious director a chance to address perhaps his greatest nemesis: the Hollywood studio system. Disguised as a thriller, the film assembles virtually every famous actor in Hollywood to create an exhilarating blend of real life and fiction. Tim Robbins plays Griffin Mill, a studio executive who begins to fear for his job when upstart Larry Levy's (Peter Gallagher) name becomes a hot topic on the lot. After receiving threatening postcards from an unidentified writer, Griffin tracks down David Kahane (Vincent D'Onofrio), who he thinks is the guilty party. The two argue, with disastrous results. Later, as Griffin struggles to keep his job while trying to distance himself from the law, he finds himself falling in love with Kahane's mysterious girlfriend (Greta Scacchi). THE PLAYER is a vicious satire that exposes the Hollywood industry as fraudulent, weak, and shallow. Altman's film also sends up both the noir genre and filmmaking technique, the latter notably in an extended opening shot which is a sprawling one-take that covers the studio's entire lot and features a series of hysterical pitches by actual screenwriters, including Buck Henry offering forth on his concept for THE GRADUATE 2. Bitter and electric, THE PLAYER ends on an ironic upbeat note that perfectly concludes a stellar picture.

After Claire witnesses a high-profile murder, Mike is among the rotating group of detectives assigned to protect her.The simple, straightforward cop is awed both by Claire's beauty and by the endless rooms of her lavish apartment. A quiet attraction develops between the two, but neither of these otherwise committed people is willing to act on it. However, the detective's wife, Ellie (Lorraine Bracco), realizes what's happening and reacts accordingly. When Mike accompanies Claire to a museum benefit one evening, the killer, Joey Venza (Andreas Katsulas), confronts her in the ladies' room. He threatens to kill her if she identifies him in a police line-up the next day and then turns himself in to the police. Stone Cold
Tom Selleck stars in this television movie adaptation of Robert B. Parker's novel as New England police chief Jesse Stone. After a serious gig as a top homicide detective in Los Angeles, Stone settles in a small town along the coast of Maine where he leads a relatively simple life. In the predominantly crime-free town of Paradise, Stone tries to minimize the drama in his life by drinking heavily, avoiding his bitter ex-wife, and keeping his new, younger girlfriend at a safe distance. But things for Stone and the other inhabitants of Paradise are thrown into chaos when a dead body washes ashore, and a high school student confesses to being raped by not one, but several attackers. Drawing on his experience as a big city investigator, Stone must find the culprits before his peaceful town turns into the playground of a serial killer.
Dancing in Twilight [DVD]
The Doors [Blu-ray Disc]
Covers the period from 1965-1971; Produced and released in 1991. Val Kilmer stars as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's electrifying profile of the Doors, which takes the group from its inception to its demise with the death of the "Lizard King" in a Paris hotel room in 1971. In the early days of the group's formation, Morrison is at his most benign; he's just a guy hanging out at the beach writing poetry. But soon the Doors' fame begins to spread--with Morrison as the focus of attention. Capable of an eerily correct vocal imitation of Morrison, Kilmer makes manifest the talent and charisma, as well as the confusion and despair, of the complex man who was the focal point of the group. As Morrisson's drug consumption and erratic behavior increase exponentially, the rest of the band--Ray Manzarek (Kyle McLachalan), John Densmore (Kevin Dillon), and Robby Krieger (Frank Whaley)--begins to grow tired of his late arrivals, the increasing number of cancellations, and the drunken recording sessions requiring infinite retakes. But no one can help Morrison as he spirals downward into an inferno of drugs, alcohol, public obscenity, and depression, bringing the music to an untimely close. Stone's intimate familiarity with SoCal in the 1960s provides the film with a high degree of surface verisimilitude, though the film is as much a tribute to the enduring power of the Doors' music as it is a cautionary tale about the perils of both celebrity and substance abuse.

The Door in the Floor [DVD]
Delicately balancing a young man's coming-of-age with a married couple's experience of trauma and loss, this adaptation of John Irving's A WIDOW FOR ONE YEAR compares with THE CIDER HOUSE RULES as a successful and faithful adaptation of the popular author's work. The film details a summer of trial separation between husband and wife Ted (Jeff Bridges) and Marion (Kim Basinger), whose union was shattered by the loss of their two sons. Though they have one remaining daughter (Elle Fanning), Ted--a popular author--hires a greenhorn writing assistant, a young man named Eddie (Jon Foster). Expecting to learn writing from a master, Eddie is little more than a glorified chauffeur for his accomplished idol. However, Eddie receives some useful lessons in manhood from the beautiful yet emotionally distant Marion, as an obsessive crush blossoms into passionate first love. While the family's scenic estate in the Hamptons provides an illusion of contentment, the tension between Ted, Marion, and Eddie only builds. Meanwhile Eddie struggles to understand the reasons for the family's painful disintegration. The strength of writer-director Tod Williams's adaptation lies in the complexity of its characters, who are given depth by a talented cast that also includes Mimi Rogers. With the narrative unfolding like a mystery, viewers have the refreshing opportunity to unravel the details of this intricate story.

The Desperate Hours [DVD]
A remake of the 1955 Humphrey Bogart thriller, DESPERATE HOURS reunites director Michael Cimino and star Mickey Rourke in a richly photographed film filled with emotional and physical violence. Bosworth (Rourke), a brutal criminal on the run, takes over a house occupied by an unhappily married couple, Nora (Mimi Rogers) and Tim (Anthony Hopkins), and their two young children. Bosworth has escaped from jail with the help of his attorney, Nancy Breyers (Kelly Lynch). The film circles around the interactions of the hostage family and Bosworth as he waits for his accomplice and plans his escape to Mexico.
Cruel Intentions 2
This prequel to the hit movie follows the adventures of rakish young Sebastian, who, at age sixteen, is determined to redeem himself for past transgressions and become a one-woman man. His kind intentions are complicated by his recently acquired stepsister, Katherine Mertuil, a viciously manipulative debutante who enjoys toying with the love (and sex) lives of her fellow high school students. Sebastian soon finds himself smitten with the adorably naive Danielle, daughter of his high school headmaster, and sets about winning her heart. But Katherine's duplicity may result in his downfall as she slyly positions herself between Sebastian and his newfound love, offering dual temptations of sex and power. Originally filmed as the prospective pilot for a television series that never materialized.

Based on the popular young adult novel by Jane Yolen, with an introduction by executive producer Dustin Hoffman.
Charms for the Easy Life [DVD]

Together, the three generations of women help each other navigate through life as they experience the trials and tribulations of love, family, and self-determination in their sleepy Southern town.

THE GUNMAN poses deep philosophical questions while retaining a tense, action-packed tone.
Trees Lounge [DVD]
An acclaimed, often-comic examination of a 31-year-old, unemployed barfly auto mechanic's pathetic non-existence. Losing his job after his friend and boss stole his girlfriend, this Long Island loser spends his days and nights in the titular watering hole (at least when he's not out driving an ice-cream truck), not realizing that talking about life isn't the same as living it. Star Steve Buscemi wrote the screenplay and makes his directorial debut.
The Doors (15th Anniversary Edition) [DVD]
In the Blink of an Eye [DVD]
Driving a car with her fugitive husband inside, Sunny Jacobs (Mimi Rogers) must protect her children from gunfire during a high speed chase. Having survived, she has her children taken away from her by the authorities. She now must spend the next 16 years trying to regain supervision of her children.
Cave In
On her first day at work as the superintendent of a mine, Pat Bogan (Mimi Rogers) comes face-to-face with one of her worst fears. Along with her husband (Ted Shackelford), son, and four other miners, she gets stuck in a mining tunnel when a large piece of machinery breaks through a wall and causes a flood of freezing water. With no other option than to depend on help from outside, Pat realizes that her recently retired father might be the key to everyone's safety before time runs out.
Street Smart [DVD]
Jerry Schatzberg's STREET SMART is a multi-layered story dealing with the politics of city life--on the streets, and in the office. Caught unprepared with a deadline he can't miss, moral-free Manhattan journalist Jonathan Fisher (Christopher Reeve) completely fabricates an article about "Tyrone," a successful pimp. The story becomes a sensation, and Jonathan is turned into a media star. But Jonathan's mendacity comes back to haunt him when a shrewd, vicious pimp named Fast Black (Morgan Freeman) wants to meet him, for "Tyrone's" tale resembles his own life a little too closely. Causing even greater trouble is the D.A.'s office, who wants to see Jonathan's notes (which don't exist), for evidence that could convict Fast Black of murder. As a result, Jonathan finds himself caught in a vicious cycle of lies that could easily end his career--and maybe his life. As the film gains momentum, it splits into two stories: first, Reeve's transition into a highly popular television reporter; and second, Fast Black's relationship with Punchy (Kathy Baker), a veteran hooker who hasn't become completely hardened. These heated street scenes provide STREET SMART with its greatest energy, which is due in large part to the electrifying performances of Baker and Freeman (who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar).

The Door In The Floor/Swimming Pool (Side By Side) [DVD]
Two films exploring the mysterious nature of sexuality and the fictions people create for themselves are collected together here: THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR and SWIMMING POOL. THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR: Delicately balancing a young man's coming-of-age with a married couple's experience of trauma and loss, this adaptation of John Irving's A WIDOW FOR ONE YEAR compares with THE CIDER HOUSE RULES as a successful and faithful adaptation of the popular author's work. In Francois Ozon's SWIMMING POOL, Charlotte Rampling plays Sarah Morton, a prim and proper British author who has written a successful series of mystery-crime novels. However, when she visits her London publisher (Charles Dance) in a dour mood, wearing a depressive pout, and complains that she's no longer his favorite, he invites her to use his vacation home in the south of France as a tranquil escape to try her hand at writing something different. Once there, Sarah receives an unexpected and highly unwelcome visit from his bold, sexy, confrontational teenage daughter Julie (Ludivine Sagnier). The two are instantly at odds with each other, as Julie drinks, smokes, and slinks around the pool topless. Her loose sexual mores and mysterious late nights infuriate Sarah, whose puritanical unease is only exacerbated in Julie's presence. Wonderful scenes of Sarah writing at her computer, her lips twitching wickedly with twisted inspiration, indicate that the story is about to take a turn for the weird. And that it does, quickly, as booze-clouded activities by the swimming pool become dark and seedy. In this immaculate thriller, Rampling and Sagnier ignite the screen with static tension. Stunted conversations, resentful glances, and strange insights about the personality of each character give the story a tangible electricity. The idyllic vacation home and sun-drenched swimming pool put an ironic spin on the haunting story. And as Ozon works his magic with pensive camerawork, providing moments of true visual comedy that only enhance the plot's intrigue, viewers will delight in what is at once an understated yet powerful narrative feat.
