Four tough movies about violence and trying to make it in the hood. The movies included in the set are: BROTHAHOOD: Featuring the talents of hot hip-hop artists King T, Domino, Ras Kass, and Hutch of the Los Angeles rap outfit Above The Law, BROTHAHOOD is actually a dramatic feature film. Shot on location on the mean streets of Los Angeles, director Reed Kaplan tells the story of a tough, ultraviolent street gang surviving in an atmosphere of urban grit, crime, and depravation. BROTHERHOOD OF DEATH: Fresh out of Vietnam, a group of tough, weapons-trained blacks return home only to find their town torn by racial strife. Tired of the injustice of whites against blacks, the brotherhood takes action. It stars members of the Washington Redskins. SOUL PATROL: A vigilante group declares war on the thugs and crooks that have been running the streets for years. Just when folks are starting to feel safe again it is revealed that the group is actually a bunch of the most ruthless drug dealers on the street. Now it's time for the Soul Patrol to take action. FIGHTING MAD: This relentless action thriller was written and directed by noted filmmaker Jonathan Demme (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, MARRIED TO THE MOB.) When an American soldier returns from his stretch in Vietnam, he tries to make some money from some gold he acquired, he finds himself in more trouble than he could imagine.

With NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, the Coen Brothers have found a perfect match in Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. Their adaptation of McCarthy's praised novel is a staggering masterpiece. In this almost impossibly faithful adaptation, the film takes place in a small Texas border town in 1980. Sheriff Bell (a never-been-better Tommy Lee Jones) has ruled the land for years without the use of a gun, but a new brand of reckless lawlessness has taken over his town. Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is an innocent Everyman with a devoted wife, Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald), but when he stumbles across a drug deal gone deadly and finds two million dollars, he's determined to keep it for himself. There's only one problem. He's being pursued by one of the most amoral, evil psychopaths that the big screen has ever seen. Wearing an absurd haircut and brandishing a pressurized weapon that's used to murder cattle, Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) creeps forward on his mission to track Moss down and return the money to its rightful owners to save his own skin. As the tension mounts, the body count begins to rise, confirming Sheriff Bell's inability to battle this new wave of modern brutality. The most striking thing about the Coen Brothers' thriller is their masterly use of silence to create an almost unbearable level of tension. Cinematographer Roger Deakins is once again at the top of his game, beautifully capturing this stark and lonely world. The well-rounded cast is clearly excited to be a part of such a stellar production--particularly Bardem, whose Chigurh is a freakishly mysterious monster, and is certain to haunt viewers long after the final credit has rolled. In a career filled with striking achievements, this might very well be the Coen Brothers' finest. It is filmmaking at its best.

The Old Man and the Sea [DVD]

John Sturges's adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's short novel, often regarded as an allegory of the latter part of the writer's career, stars Spencer Tracy as Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman who has been nearly three months without a significant haul. Heaped with ridicule by other fisherman, he once again pushes off in his decrepit ketch, hoping that this trip will finally bring success. After a time at sea he hooks a powerful marlin that drags the man's tiny craft for a couple of days. Santiago engages in an epic battle with the monster, his hands nearly cut to ribbons as he's pushed to the limit of his dwindling strength. At rest during lulls in this war, he has dreams of his stronger and younger self, only to awaken to reality. At length, through guile, experience, and endurance, he lands the hefty marlin with a harpoon and secures him to the side of his boat. But a new danger arises, in the form of a school of hungry sharks that attacks the boat, attempting to seize his catch. Tracy's work is memorable in this stagy adaptation of the well-loved literary work.

When Sheriff Mapes (Richard Widmark) arrives at the home of Matheu (Louis Gossett, Jr.) to investigate the murder of a white farmer, he finds 18 elderly black men and one white woman, plantation owner Candy Marshall (Holly Hunter), already there, each holding a recently fired rifle and claiming to be the killer. The independent-minded Matheu is not entirely pleased to receive the help of the others, who include World War II veteran Yank (Woody Strode), frail Jacob (Papa John Creach), and group spokesman Clatoo (Joe Seneca). The white friends of the dead man ready for a lynching while the increasingly frustrated Mapes tries to beat answers out of the old men, a tactic they endure with stoic dignity. Director Volker Schlöndorff, known for tackling tough social issues (THE TIN DRUM, THE OGRE), and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and screenwriter Charles Fuller (A SOLDIER'S STORY) combine their talents in a searing adaptation of Ernest J. Gaines's critically acclaimed novel A GATHERING OF OLD MEN. Fine acting from the ensemble cast and the spare, clean images of master photographer Edward Lachman deepen the stirring portrait of unflinching solidarity in the face of explosive racial tension.

Two groundbreaking, innovative silent films from legendary director Cecil B. DeMille are collected here. 1917's THE WHISPERING CHORUS used visionary new technical breakthroughs (such as multiple exposures and a DeMille trademark, parallel editing) to tell its emotionally complex story about a criminal with a guilty conscience. The following year, OLD WIVES FOR NEW caused a sensation with its then-taboo subject matter, including divorce, affairs, women's rights, and strongly implied premarital sex.

A medieval Polish legend comes to life in this film based on the novel by Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski. Long before Poland was a nation, various Slavic tribes fought for regional dominance--with bloody results. This piece of history is presented here in epic fashion, much like director Jerzy Hoffman's previous project, WITH FIRE AND SWORD.

This Bette Davis movie from 1934 finds her playing Kit Marlowe, an acclaimed author who tries to help her childhood friend Millie (Miriam Hopkins) to become a writer. Millie's talents don't extend beyond pulpy trash, but she ends up making more money than Kit, and the couple enters into a lengthy feud. Hopkings and Davis reunite on-screen after acting together in 1939's THE OLD MAID, and it's alleged that they didn't see eye-to-eye on the set of OLD ACQUAINTANCE, leading critics to ponder how much of their real-life hatred spilled over into the characters.
