For those laserdisc aficionados who want to begin building a DVD library without losing the money they've invested in the older format, Pioneer offers a number of players that can play both types of discs. One such player in the "combi" field is the DVL-919.Like its Pioneer predecessors, the 919 can read both the top and bottom surfaces of a laserdisc -- which means there's no need to flip the disc over after viewing one side. Other features designed to enhance LD viewing include digital time-base correction and a digital comb filter that helps reduce moire artifacts.The most noteworthy improvement over the 909's design is on the audio side. The DVL-919 has 24-bit digital/analog conversion for stereo soundtracks. There's no built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder, but the player can pass a DD 5.1 or DTS bitstream to an external decoding device via optical or coaxial digital audio outputs. Pioneer's version of "Virtual Dolby" gives the listener a surround-like effect with only two speakers. The unit's convenience features include "continue play memory" for up to five DVDs -- you can take a disc out, put it back in later, and the player will find the spot where you left off.
