When you play DVD movies encoded with DTS or Dolby Digital soundtracks, the built-in decoder processes all six channels of audio information (left front, right front, center, left-surround, right-surround, and low-frequency effects) without the need for an external decoder, and with the right audio components, lets you enjoy the amazing fidelity of discrete 5.1-channel surround sound. The decoder also allows you to control speaker configuration. Other features include picture control (brightness, color, contrast, gamma correction, and sharpness), disc program play, and disc random play.

The DVD-CV40 is the more basic of the two 5-disc DVD changers in Panasonic's year-2000 line. It features a 96-kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC), so it'll play back audiophile 96/24 audio-only DVDs. It also offers a Cinema mode, which Panasonic says will improve visibility of details in dark scenes. Aside from the aforementioned features, this unit includes most of the basics found in today's DVD players. A 10-bit video DAC provides video playback quality that's superior to that from the 8- and 9-bit converters found in most early DVD players. The unit's high-speed scan (fast-forward/rewind) can reach a speed of 100x normal playback. Panasonic's dialog enhancer raises the level of the center channel to make dialog more intelligible. Finally, virtual surround sound, a feature that's quickly becoming ubiquitous, attempts to mimic 5.1-channel sound from just two speakers. -- PJR

The DVD-CV50 includes a built-in Dolby Digital decoder, component video outputs, a 96-kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC), both coaxial and optical digital outputs, and an illuminated remote control, an option Panasonic includes only in its higher-end DVD players. The Dolby Digital decoder gives you the option of using the DVD-CV50 with a Dolby Digital-ready receiver -- this type of receiver has a 5.1-channel analog input to accept an external decoder. The CV50 will decode the Dolby Digital signal and output it to the receiver via the analog jacks. Other features include a 10-bit video DAC; high-speed scan (up to 100x normal playback speed); quick start, which begins playback within five or six seconds; virtual surround sound; and a cinema mode, which Panasonic claims will provide a "softer" picture. -- PJR

The Panasonic C-220 is one of the first of 1999's wave of inexpensive DVD changers. It includes everything you'd expect from a basic single-disc player, just five times as much of it. The point is to take advantage of CD backward-compatibility, so you can spin the flicks and the tunes too, or watch the entire "Nightmare on Elm Street" series straight through.Panasonic packed the minimum of extras into this changer. The 220's Quick Disc rotation system is said to out-rotate other changers, while a disc exchange feature lets you futz with the other four trays while one disc plays. The volume of dialogue can be increased relative to the sound effects, a good late-night viewing feature (most receivers can do this too). A simulated surround circuit is provided for people without 5.1-channel systems. The 220's remote controls only the player and isn't backlit.
