That's the prime recommendation for this otherwise basic unit.The SD-2008 has got the basic DVD feature set included on all Toshiba models: a coaxial digital audio output for connection to a Dolby Digital decoder, an S-Video out, composite video and analog audio outs, and 96kHz/24-bit digital audio processing that conforms to the evolving DVD Audio standard.But Toshiba wants you to feel you're getting more than just a black box with a DVD/CD tray. A push of a button gives you the on-screen Bit-Rate Meter, which displays the bits-per-second processed by the 2008's 10-bit video digital-analog converter (DAC). Don't have a Dolby Digital receiver? Toshiba gives you Spatializer N-2-2 faux surround sound, producing what appears to be multi-channel sound from just your stereo TV or two speakers. There's also Video Black Level expander circuitry, which allows you to set the reference black threshold cutoff to Normal (7.5 IRE) or Enhanced (0 IRE); Enhanced expands the overall contrast range in the picture, resulting in richer, deeper blacks and finer tonal gradation.Toshiba adds some other digital bells and whistles, such as a four-times 25-sector picture zoom, and a three-position (dimmable) fluorescent display that allows users to tone down the distraction from the otherwise bright display lights.Since this is an entry-level unit, it does not have a jog shuttle on the remote, unlike its more expensive Toshiba siblings, but does have similar navigation keys laid out in a compass cursor manner.
