Zenith's DVC2550 is the least expensive 5-disc DVD changer right now (summer 2000). While it doesn't have quite the panoply of features that more expensive players boast, it does have component video outputs and a faux-surround sound setting. The DVC2550 is a carousel-type changer with a 5-disc capacity; you can swap a disc while another continues to play. Like all DVD players, the DVC2550 can also play audio CDs, though its focus is of course on video. This deck has such basics as 10-bit video processing, pause, scan and zoom. An on-screen display gives you easy access to internal settings and options. The rear panel hosts a fairly comprehensive set of connections, including component video, S-video and composite video outputs. It also has both coaxial and optical digital audio outputs, as well as two sets of analog audio jacks. The DVC2550 is compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks. You might also have a look at RCA's RC5910P. It has the ability to shuffle between tracks on all five CDs in its carousel. -- EM

One of the least expensive DVD players currently on the market, Zenith's DVD-2200 is second only to the redoubtable (and difficult to find) Konka DVD1800U in low listprice. If you're looking to pay the absolute minimum for a DVD player, this Zenith will surely end up on your 1999 comparison list.Feature-wise, the 2200 fits the bare-bones mold, with just a few scraps of flesh still holding on. Topping the list is avirtual surround sound circuit, so your TV or stereo speakers can provide some approximation of the surround experience. Zenith brands its standard search functions "EZ," and the EZ Scan includes a bookmark feature so you can return to specific sections of the disc. Picture zoom is a nice touch too.You'll be missing a tricked-out universal remote (found on the step-up 2250), optical digital output, on-board Dolby Digital decoding, and some other features with this player. It does pass a DTS bitstream (unlike the Konka), but video purists should look to Zenith's own DVD-2300 for component video outputs.-- DK
