Propelled to fame during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, Pedro Infante was one of the country's biggest stars. Nicknamed El Ídolo, the dashing actor had a prolific film career that boasted over 60 pictures. Tragically, Infante died in a plane crash in 1957, breaking the hearts of millions of fans and abruptly bringing to an end, some say, this boom period for Mexico's burgeoning film industry. In this release from the COLECCION PEDRO INFANTE, however, his legacy lives on. Included here is the musical comedy !?QUE TE HA DADO ESA MUJER?!

Shot in 16mm, FUNNY HA HA examines life after college in an understated and moving way. Written, directed, and co-starring Andrew Bujalski, the film features impressively natural performances led by newcomer Kate Dollenmayer (a friend of Bujalski's from film school, and an animator for WAKING LIFE), whose commanding yet familiar presence may lead viewers to feel she's someone they've known for years. In fact everything about FUNNY HA HA feels familiar, from the characters to the dialogue. While reminiscent of early Richard Linklater work like SLACKER due to its slow pace and focus on human interaction, the conversations in FUNNY HA HA are less philosophical in theme, and more grounded in reality (awkward silences, stuttering, miscommunication and all). Focusing more on character than on plot, the film revolves loosely around Marnie (Dollenmayer), an attractive and intelligent young woman searching clumsily for some sense of purpose in what seems at times like an aimless life. Nearing 24 and recently unemployed, Marnie spends her days hanging out with friends she knew in college, trying out unsatisfying temp positions, and pining after an unavailable and unwilling love interest. Bujalski's script and the seemingly improvisational performances of his cast capture the pains, joys, and frustrations of everyday life. Like Marnie, FUNNY HA HA is consumed not so much by an outward angst, but rather the reluctantly accepted reality that life is not perfect. In exploring the themes of Marnie's life, it artfully shows that people aren't always good or bad, things aren't always black and white, boundaries are easily blurred, and timing is often off. The world of the film is one that many viewers should recognize--one in which tragedy, humor, sadness, and happiness all coexist.

Briefly one of the hottest bands of the early '80s, the English Beat blended punk, reggae, R & B, and ska in an infectious amalgam that propelled them to stardom. Ranking alongside Madness and the Specials, the group included a diversity of age, race, and backgrounds that possessed a remarkable chemistry, and the group remains a seminal voice today. Though they broke up directly preceding a scheduled U.S. tour, eventually splintering into two groups (General Public and Fine Young Cannibals), they reunited after many years for a 2003 UK tour, during which this concert was filmed. Held at London's Royal Festival Hall, the show was the culmination of years of hoping for many fans, and featured a set list comprised of many old favorites, including the anthemic "Mirror in the Bathroom."

Named Best Film at the Deauville Asian Film Festival, SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE is the first movie in director Chanwook Park's revenge trilogy, which also includes OLDBOY and SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. Ha-kyun Shin stars as Ryu, a young deaf mute with green hair and a job at a smelting factory. His ailing sister (Ji-Eun Lim) is in dire need of a kidney, and when the doctors cannot find a suitable match, Ryu, who has just been laid off, takes his severance pay and all his savings to a shady black-market organization that will take out his kidney so his sister can use it. But he is tricked, and soon convinced by his anarchist girlfriend, Youngmi (Doo-na Bae), to kidnap the four-year-old daughter (Bo-bae Han) of factory president Park (Kang-ho Song) in order to get enough money to pay for his sister's legitimate transplant. But things don't go as planned, leading to gripping, violent, and bloody battles as both Ryu and Park seek to gain vengeance for the wrongs done to their families. Director Park has taken great care to develop strong, believable characters who are driven by heartbreak to commit acts they never dreamed they'd be capable of in this emotionally wrenching drama.

This is a jaw-droppingly bizarre movie from Korea that mixes scenes of gruesome torture and violence with comedy and heartbreaking profundity. Perhaps as a result of too many amphetamines and violent incidents in his past, beekeeper Lee Byeong Gu (Sin Ha-Gyun) has become convinced that an unscrupulous business tycoon (Kan Man-Shik) is actually an alien from the planet Andromeda. Lee's frumpy acrobat girlfriend (Hwang Jung-Min) helps him abduct the "alien" and torture him into confessing. Meanwhile, a hangdog detective is following a trail leading to Lee's hideout high in the mountains. Let the timid be warned: this is not the antipollution comedy that the title might indicate. Man's inhumanity to man is certainly depicted--as in events like Korea's 1980 Kwangju riots--but there's more going on here than any one summation could describe: bees attack, a pet dog named Earth dines on human remains, alternate theories of evolution are posited (i.e. Noah's Ark was a deep submarine carrying DNA samples); an entire lifetime of films, political turmoil, anime and manga are boiled down and distilled into one profound, multi-textual allegory. Adventurous viewers will be in for one hell of a ride, as this film dares go where few have gone before, yet it does so with heart and intellect to match its wicked humor and headlong momentum.

From Korean horror director Byeong-ki Ahn comes PHONE. Like RINGU and DARK WATER before it, PHONE contains what have rapidly become the standard conventions of the Asian horror film: technology as the source of terror and estrangement, a female protagonist pitted against a vengeful female ghost, and an endangered child at the center of events. Ji-won is an investigative reporter who begins receiving a series of mysterious and increasingly threatening phone calls. She does everything possible to stop the calls, but to no avail. When her young charge answers the phone accidentally and begins shrieking in terror, it becomes apparent that Ji-won will need to use her journalistic skills to discover who--or what--is making the calls.

South Korean writer-director Jin Jang fashions a Tarantino-esque gangster flick that humanizes its criminal protagonists with a postmodern blend of action, comedy, and romance. One of South Korea's top-grossing films, Jang's aptly titled GUNS & TALKS centers on a quartet of loquacious, pretty-boy hit-men--level-headed leader, Sang-yeon (Hyeon-jun Shin); his inexperienced younger brother, Ha-yeon (Bin Won); gun-happy sniper, Jae-yeong (Jae-yeong Jeong); and demolitions expert, Jung-woo (Ha-kyun Shin)--who live under the same roof and engage in meandering conversations about the meaning of life when they're not busy carrying out for-hire assassinations. Bolstered by an all-star cast, GUNS & TALKS balances its dialogue-heavy set pieces with violent action sequences, absurdist scenarios of screwball comedy, and an arresting template of visuals that includes split screens and bullet-time slow motion.

Keith Haring, successor to Andy Warhol's pop zeitgeist, was an artist whose playful drawings made a serious commentary on the 1980s. His work, kinetic iconography rooted in primitivism, can be found throughout the spectrum of mass culture, from skateboards to subway walls. This is an inside view of an artist whose passion for the contemporary human conditions was the fervor that drove his art.

Frederick Ashton's LA FILLE MAL GARDEE debuted to critical acclaim in 1960 and is considered a modern classic of ballet. The story, a simple comic romance about the love between a farm boy and girl that is temporarily disrupted by a rich suitor, is filled with warmth, humor, rustic charm, and even a twinge of tragedy. This filmed version of the ballet is performed by the Basle Ballet Company with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Lanchbery.

The erotic intrigue, deception, and sexual cruelty of LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES are manifest here in the rigid formalities of Korea's 18th Century Chosun Dynasty. The beautiful and depraved Lady Cho is seeking revenge on her husband, who has decided to take a young concubine, So-ok (Lee Soh-yeon). To this end she enlists the aid of her equally licentious cad of a cousin, Jo-Won (Bae Yong-jun), and asks him to deflower and impregnate the naïve teenager; if he succeeds, he wins bedding privileges with Lady Cho, the one woman who has always resisted his advances. Lord Jo-Won desists, however, in favor of a greater challenge: the beautiful young widow Lady Sook (Jeon Do-yeon), he feels, is a more suitable conquest: she has taken a vow of chastity, and is a passionate devotee of the Catholic faith, illegal at the time. The young Lord uses all manner of devious means to get close to the "Gate of Chastity," as she is known, posing as a lost soul in need of saving, though he may find his oft-repeated mantra--"I have room for only one person in my heart"--challenged in unexpected ways as he uncovers a heretofore-undiscovered humanity lurking within his scheming soul. The lush photography and stunning costumes make this film a joy to watch, with the sizzling erotic scenes and subtle playfulness contrasting markedly with the stiff social conventions of the time.

One of South Korea's most popular television mini-series, DAMO: THE UNDERCOVER LADY DETECTIVE is at once detective story, historical drama, soap opera, and martial arts epic. Set in 17th-century Korea, the series centers on heroine Chae-ohk (Ji-won Ha), a lower-class servant girl who works for the local police department and helps her commanding officer, Hwang-bo (Seo-jin Lee), solve some of his more difficult cases. Assigned to a routine counterfeiting case that leads her to a rebel group bent on overthrowing the government, Chae-ohk finds herself drawn to the class-struggle ideology of their charismatic leader, Sung-baek (Min-joon Kim), setting the stage for a swordplay-fueled showdown between her sense of duty and her longing for freedom. Though the plot may seem farfetched to Western viewers, the servant-girl-moonlights-as-undercover-cop storyline is rooted in actual Korean history for a unique but authentic spin on the detective genre.

Opening in September of 1950, after U.S.-led forces had landed in Incheon, turning the tide of the Korean War, WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL tells the (fictional) story of a remote little village where the residents have never seen guns and are completely ignorant of the conflict going on in their country. Their simple, quiet lives are disrupted when an American pilot, Smith (Steve Taschler), crashes just outside the village. While the kindly villagers tend to Smith's injuries, a pair of North Korean soldiers, young gung-ho Seo Taek-gi (Ryu Deok-hyeon) and the older Jang Young-hee (Lim Ha-ryong), and their commander, Lee Su-hwa (Jeong Jae-yeong), as well as a pair of South Korean soldiers, deserter Pyo Hyun-chul (Shin Ha-kyun of SAVE THE GREEN PLANET!) and medic Mun Sang-sang (Seo Jae-gyeong), all find themselves stranded in the little village. There's a lengthy standoff, but when the soldiers accidentally destroy the town's food supply, they all reluctantly agree to work together to help the town restore the food so they'll survive the coming winter. Before long, the soldiers begin to connect with one another and form a strong bond with the locals. There's even a budding romance between Taek-gi and a kooky, carefree village girl, Yeo-il (Kang Hye-jeong). Unfortunately for everyone, UN forces believe that Smith was shot down by North Korean forces and are prepared to bomb the region to protect an important supply route. WELCOME TO DONGMAKGOL was a surprise blockbuster in South Korea. The film marks the feature debut of writer-director Park Gwang-hyeon and is based on a play by Jang Jin.
