Richard Loncraine's WIMBLEDON is a lighthearted romantic comedy set in the high-pressure world of professional tennis. Peter Colt (Paul Bettany) is a 31-year-old Englishman who was once ranked 11th in the world, but has now dropped to a pathetic 119th. Realizing that his days are numbered, Peter intends to retire from the game after playing in one final Wimbledon. But when he accidentally walks into the hotel room of rising American star Lizzie Bradbury (Kirsten Dunst), sparks begin to fly and Peter begins to find his touch on the court once again. Unfortunately for Peter, Lizzie's overbearing father, Dennis (Sam Neill), is well aware that Lizzie's game suffers when she is distracted by love, and he bans the two from seeing each other. This doesn't bode well for Peter, who is about to play in the final against cocky American superstar Jake Hammond (Austin Nichols). Not to mention the fact that Peter has the hopes of an entire nation riding on his shoulders. Loncraine's breezy comedy is fueled by the chemistry between Bettany and Dunst, and also features several memorable supporting characters--including Peter's bickering parents (Bernard Hill and Eleanor Bron), his goofy brother (James McAvoy), his practice partner (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), and his cell phone-wielding agent (Jon Favreau).

The rivalry between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova was a high point in the women's game during the 1970s, and their ferocious battles on the Wimbledon courts have become the stuff of legend. In 1978, Evert had the upper hand. With two consecutive Wimbledon titles to her name in the preceding years, she expected to snatch a third title in '78 as she faced Navratilova in the final. After easily taking the first set, it seemed that Evert was on course for victory. But Navratilova fought back to take the second set, demonstrating much of the steely determination that defined her style of play. The third and final set provided a nail-biting conclusion for viewers, and ultimately the game provided one of the best tennis matches the tournament has ever seen. The 1978 final is presented here in its entirety, neatly demonstrating two different yet equally successful approaches to the game of tennis.

Becker and Sampras return to recount these achievements here, while other legends such as Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, and Roger Federer also offer their thoughts on their respective record-breaking achievements at Wimbledon. A pair of 2004's successful romantic comedies are collected here together: IN GOOD COMPANY and WIMBLEDON. In his previous effort, ABOUT A BOY, writer-director Paul Weitz managed to smoothly blend elements of dark comedy with heartwarming drama to deftly undercut both of the genre's undesirable excesses. IN GOOD COMPANY is Weitz's solo directorial debut sans his brother Chris, with whom he co-helmed the aforementioned BOY and the wildly successful AMERICAN PIE series. Here, he perfects his gift for the so-called "dramedy," softening the jagged, sometimes ugly edges of corporate satire with warmth and sentiment. Dennis Quaid is perfectly cast as Dan Foreman, a slightly weary yet still dashing advertising boss and dedicated family man. He seems to have it all as a wholesome and admirable father, an existence which smacks of the archetypical mid-century sitcom dad that he so brilliantly portrayed as the secretly homosexual husband-father in Todd Haynes' FAR FROM HEAVEN. Enter Carter Duryea (THAT 70s SHOW's Topher Grace), a cocky young upstart hired to replace him. Before long, Dan is forced to be deferential to his new baby-faced boss, not only in the office but also at his own dinner table when Dan begins dating his lovely daughter Alex (Scarlett Johanssen). This old-fashioned, slightly soap-operatic twist is the perfect catalyst for the integration of humanity into an environment (and cinematic genre) that is so often devoid of it, and the film simultaneously lightens in spirit and deepens in emotion as a slow-yet-sure, father-and-son bond develops between the former adversaries. Grass court tennis reaches its yearly apex at Wimbledon, as the greatest players in the world converge on London to partake in some ferociously fought contests. The women's game of the 1960s and '70s was enlivened by the contributions from American star Billie Jean King, who soon entered the record books with her incredible run of successes at Wimbledon and elsewhere. A fervent advocate for equality in the sport, King shook the tennis world both on and off the court. This program focuses on her Wimbledon achievements, which include six victories as Ladies' Singles Champion and ten Ladies' Doubles titles. Footage from these matches is interspersed with commentary from King and a variety of luminaries from the game, making this a wonderful overview of her time in the Wimbledon spotlight.

In Mathieu Amalric's quiet, meandering film based on the novel by Daniele del Giudice, Jeanne Balibar plays a French woman conducting a personally motivated research project on an intellectual figure who has been dead for 15 years. Starting in Trieste, Italy, she makes contact with a few owners of antique book shops who give her the first leads for her investigation. From there she sets up appointments with a series of older people searching for some vital pieces of information. It is unclear from her interviews, and her various train trips to and from her destinations, whether she is pleased with her progress. Finally, apparently frustrated, she winds up at the beach where she nearly drifts out to see while sunbathing on a surf board. The Wimbledon Stage of the title finally comes into play when the woman ends up in London, at the tube station by that name. Several days at a bed and breakfast there do nothing to further her efforts, though does let out a chilling midnight scream at one point. A hypnotic and strange film, WIMBLEDON STAGE is an enigma, both to its protagonist and to its audience. This film was included in the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema 2002 festival organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York City.
