HBO delivers another stunning, evocative drama in DEADWOOD. The channel has an impressive reputation when it comes to producing edge-of-your-seat television (THE SOPRANOS, SIX FEET UNDER), and DEADWOOD follows neatly in that tradition. Set in 1876, the story unfolds just two weeks after the defeat of Custer at Little Big Horn. The town of Deadwood is located in the Black Hills Indian Cession, and is populated largely by illegal settlers and miscreants looking to make a quick buck. Among them are Al Swearengen (Ian McShane), who owns the local saloon; Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant), a former law enforcer; and the infamous Wild Bill Hickok (Keith Carradine). Some awesome acting combines with intricate storylines, absorbing direction, and impressive sets to make DEADWOOD another essential series from the HBO stable. This collection presents all three seasons of the show.

This John Wayne collection presents nine of the Duke's greatest Westerns. In THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962), a politician recounts his friendship with a dead gunslinger. In TRUE GRIT (1969), a U.S. Marshal tracks down a murderer who has escaped into Indian territory. In HONDO (1953), a half-Indian Cavalry scout finds a young mother living on a isolated ranch in unfriendly Apache country. In MCLINTOCK (1963), a wealthy cattle baron attempts to "tame" his headstrong wife. In BIG JAKE (1971), an aging cowboy sets out to rescue his kidnapped grandson from a violent gang. In THE SHOOTIST (1976), a veteran gunfighter learns that he's dying of stomach cancer. In RIO LOBO (1970), a Union colonel is teamed with two Confederate soldiers to take down a thieving bootlegger. In THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER (1965), prodigal sons return home to attend the funeral of their murdered mother. And in EL DORADO (1967), a crooked landowner hires a gunman to scare a family into selling their land, provoking a standoff with the town sheriff. See individual titles for further plot details.

Based on the best-selling novel by Gary Brandner, this horror film makes effective use of the classic werewolf tale. Dee Wallace stars as Karen White, a popular female reporter in Los Angeles who cannot escape the horror of a traumatic experience that she suffered while trying to capture Eddie Quist (Robert Ricardo), a dangerous serial killer. When her psychologist (Patrick Macnee) recommends a retreat to "The Colony," up the Northern California coast, she reluctantly agrees, hoping to recover from her nightmarish visions. Karen and her husband (Christopher Stone) arrive at the remote retreat and are shocked at the bizarre behavior of the motley crew of residents. Lurking in the ominous Northern California woods, blanketed by fog, strange sounds can be heard at night, luring the members of the retreat into the forest. In anguish, Karen stumbles on the deadly secret of the community: when sexually excited, they turn into werewolves! The horrified journalist tries to escape from the retreat, battling the lair of leering lycanthropes in a fight for her life. Superb special effects add to the picture, with several shocking human-to-monster transformation sequences.

The first of 14 films pairing Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as the definitive Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, this version of THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES remains the most celebrated adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic mystery. When his uncle is found murdered on the grounds of the family estate, Sir Henry Baskerville (Richard Greene) arrives from abroad to claim his ancestral home on the fog-shrouded Devonshire moors. But family friend Dr. Mortimer (Lionel Atwill) brings Sir Henry to master sleuth Sherlock Holmes with fears for the young heir's life and tales of a family curse placed upon the Baskerville clan. Together they travel to the desolate Baskerville Hall and encounter a slew of mysterious goings-on, including a suspicious butler (John Carradine) and the ghost of a hound haunting the moors. Dripping with atmosphere, this suspenseful and absorbing film is one of the true gems of the Holmes adaptations.

DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK is John Ford's first film in Technicolor (which recently perfected far richer shadings of color than had previously been possible), and the director uses it to stunning effect. The film stars Henry Fonda as Revolutionary War-era farmer Gilbert Martin, who, in 1776, has returned with his well-born wife, Lana (Claudette Colbert), to his rustic cabin in the increasingly dangerous Mohawk River valley. At first unaccustomed to the harsh physical challenges of frontier life, Lana adjusts to the work at hand and is soon able to help her husband in the fields. Shortly after they learn that the colonies are at war with the British, their farmhouse is attacked and burned to the ground by a party of Tory-led Indians. The feisty Widow McKlennar (Edna May Oliver) provides temporary shelter for the couple, but it's only a matter of time before the Indians launch a more brutal assault. Save for THE QUIET MAN, DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK contains the richest passages of pastoral imagery in Ford's entire canon, the visual beauty nearly upstaging the spectacular and terrifying Indian battles. The performances, particularly Oliver (who garnered an Oscar nomination) as the vinegary widow and the superbly stoic Fonda, enable Ford to again demonstrate the heroism and limitations of rugged individualism. The scenes of an Indian prisoner spread-eagled on a wagon and Gilbert's escape are repeated almost exactly in the 1982 dystopian classic THE ROAD WARRIOR.

John Ford's memorable screen version of John Steinbeck's epic novel of the Great Depression--often regarded as the director's best film--stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy (John Carradine), Tom finds his extended family, including Pa (Charles Grapewin) and his indomitable Ma (Jane Darwell), packing their ramshackle truck to seek work in the fields of California. As the family treks across the country, their dissolution begins with the deaths of Tom's grandparents at close intervals. When they arrive in California, the Joads find only an abundance of poverty-stricken migrants like themselves and little in the way of potential work. Yet, ever resilient, they maintain their dignity, hoping for the best. Among the talented cast, Fonda does perhaps the best work of his career, as does Qualen in the film's most haunting sequence. Director of photography Gregg Toland captures the suffering and the weathered, luminous nobility of the Joads and the other uprooted, drifting families, creating striking images equal to the best work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. In a stirring film that stands as a microcosm of the depression experience of millions, Ford gives poverty a human face in a way that was rare then and even rarer in the decades to follow as Hollywood films with a sense of class consciousness dwindled like a species nearing extinction.

THE BOOGEYMAN: A strange, memorable film from horror dilettante Ulli Lommel, whose long and multifaceted career in the industry is highlighted by this project, which combines the best elements of HALLOWEEN and THE EXORCIST. Susanna Love (BLANK GENERATION)--Lommel's wife--and Nicholas Love (WILD AT HEART) star as Lacey and Willy, young adults haunted by a terrible incident in their past, when as children they killed their mother's abusive lover. The incident took place in front of a mirror, and now Willy, who has become mute, is terrified of them. Lacey, for her part, is occasionally possessed by an evil spirit, despite her efforts in psychotherapy. She decides to revisit her old home, where, looking into the same mirror, she sees the dead man walking toward her. Terrified, she breaks the mirror, apparently releasing the evil spirit, which then goes on a rampage, brutally killing anyone who touches a shard of the mirror. THE RETURN OF THE BOOGEYMAN: The final film in the BOOGEYMAN trilogy is an unconventional indie shocker. Annie (Kelly Galindo) is tormented by dreams of a man with no face, and she soon realizes that she is having premonitions of actual crimes this man will commit. With the help of a few friends, including her psychiatrist, Annie attempts to locate the criminal before he strikes again-but are they simply playing into his hands?

Before Martin Scorsese wowed the world with MEAN STREETS, he teamed up with legendary producer Roger Corman for BOXCAR BERTHA, a rollicking period drama that features a memorable performance from Barbara Hershey. Hershey is "Boxcar" Bertha Thompson, a Depression-era woman who loses her father in an airplane accident. Joining up with controversial union leader Big Bill Shelley (David Carradine), Bertha is forced into a life on the run when a group of conservative witch hunters targets Shelley as a Communist. Along the way, Shelley and Bertha fall into a life of underground crime, which includes stealing from railroad bosses. Their run comes to a crashing halt when the extremely powerful railroad company catches up with Shelley and exacts a nasty revenge. Based on the book SISTER OF THE ROAD by "Boxcar" Bertha Thompson and Ben L. Reitman, Scorsese's film is an entertaining romp through an exciting chapter in American history. His sure-handed direction confirms the director's ability to tackle traditional formula pictures, although his desire to create a new cinematic realism wouldn't surface until 1973's MEAN STREETS.
