Summer Rental ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]
Description:
John Candy plays a burned-out air-traffic controller, John Chester, who takes his family on a vacation to Florida where everything imaginable goes wrong--and occasionally right as well. Summertime follies lead to a clash with the smug owner of his shabby rental. Improbably but delightfully, this results in a boat race that may bring his put-upon family together and bandage Chester's wounded honor. This 1980s comedy is bolstered by its atypically fine performances, not least Rip Torn as a pirate.
Crocodile Dundee 2 (I Love the 80's; Widescreen) [DVD]
Aussie croc wrangler Mick Dundee (Paul Hogan) is starting to adjust to his crazy new surroundings in New York City with his beautiful new "sheila" Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski) when they accidentally get on the bad side of a ruthless drug lord. Their trouble starts when Sue's old flame Bob (Dennis Boutsikaris) is murdered in Colombia for taking pictures of an assassination by drug smugglers. Having sent the photos to Sue, she and Mick are suddenly and inadvertently mixed up in his unfinished business, as the DEA and drug cartel henchman come looking for the film. The urban terrain of New York, however, is no place for the outdoorsy "Croc" and his posse to hide out. So they hightail to for the Australian outback--a place infinitely more familiar to Mick--and even the odds by leading the big city hoods into a rugged landscape where they get a fast, funny and deadly lesson in wilderness survival. Much more an adventure thriller than the "stranger in a strange land" comedy of the first, Mick is still quick with the drawling one-liners, and the obvious warmth between real-life partners Hogan and Kozlowski adds to the fun.

Crocodile Dundee (I Love the 80's; Widescreen) [DVD]
Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), a reporter for Newsday, travels Down Under to write a feature on Australia and its people. She gets a tip to visit a free-spirited bush ranger who was attacked by a crocodile, which he then killed with his bare hands. So Sue heads into the red sands and squalid swamps of Northern Territory outback to a tiny fly-blown burg called Walkabout Creek, where she is greeted by Wally (John Meillon) of Never-Never Safaris. Wally takes her to the pub to meet the infamous Michael J. "Crocodile" "Mick" Dundee (Paul Hogan), who charms her with his swagger and grit. He offers to lead her though the bush, as she's "just a Sheila," to where he was attacked. This comment raises her city-girl feminist hackles and she strikes out alone. But when Mick saves her from the grasp of a toothy reptile, she ducks under his wing and into his heart, and invites him to return with her to New York City. Here in the sophisticated urban jungles of Manhattan, the bushman has finally met his match, as he endures New York streets of the 1980s, filled with drug dealers, muggers, transvestites, and prostitutes. Sue finally gets more than just a story as the "wonder from down under" rocks the Big Apple to its core.
Popeye (I Love the 80's Edition; Widescreen) [DVD]
The classic comic strip and cartoon hero comes to life in Robert Altman's film adaptation of the adventures of the spinach-munching sailor. After he's thrown from his ship during a storm, Popeye (Robin Williams) finds refuge in a quaint seaside town. There he rents a room from the Oyls and meets their daughter Olive (the perfectly cast Shelley Duvall). Olive is engaged to Captain Bluto (Paul Smith), a bully and ruffian who is in charge of collecting taxes for the mysterious Commandant. Popeye, who was orphaned at an early age, is in the midst of a desperate search for his missing father, but what he doesn't realize is that the shipwreck has brought him unexpectedly close to his final destination. In bringing his own distinct vision to E. C. Segar's legendary hero, Altman creates an atmosphere that is breezy, loose, and filled with slapstick shenanigans. Williams portrays Popeye with a physically comic flair that is both honest and energetic--as do the rest of the cast members, including frequent Altman contributors Duvall, Paul Dooley, and David Arkin. Harry Nilsson's songs add to the lighthearted affair, making POPEYE an enjoyable family viewing experience all around.

Airplane! (I Love the 80's Edition; Widescreen) [DVD]
The spoof comedy that set the gold standard for all that followed it, AIRPLANE takes shots at the slew of disaster movies that peppered cinemas in the 70s. When the passengers and crew of a jet are incapacitated due to food poisoning, a rogue pilot (who has a drinking problem and is afraid of flying) must cooperate with his ex-girlfriend turned stewardess to bring the plane to a safe landing. No disaster flick cliche is left unroasted, and the musical score itself takes a less than reverent look at overly melodramatic compositions.
Clue ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]

An all-star cast assume the roles of Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd), Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn), Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren), and the rest of the multicolored bunch as the one-liners fly in this jaunty whodunit. It all concludes with three alternate endings that let viewers decide who the real murderer was.

But if he can beat Beth's new boyfriend in a ski run down the treacherous K-12, he may be able to win her back. Along the way, Lane also encounters a beautiful French exchange student, a nasal spray-snorting neighbor, a rabid newspaper boy, and dancing hamburgers. "Savage" Steve Holland (ONE CRAZY SUMMER) directs this 1985 cult favorite.
Top Secret! ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]
Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker--of AIRPLANE! and NAKED GUN fame--wrote and directed this genre-hopping slapstick juggernaut which lampoons World War II spy films and Elvis movies, making many other satirical stops along the way. East Germany is planning a cultural festival, and invites rock-and-roll singer Nick Rivers (Val Kilmer) (but only after Leonard Bernstein can't make it). The festival, however is a mere distraction so that the Germans can launch a secret attack on a submarine fleet without being detected. Nick soon finds himself involved with the French resistance, encountering slapstick gags and film parodies every time he turns around.

Rustlers' Rhapsody (I Love the 80's Edition; Widescreen) [DVD]
A flashy, singing cowpoke (Tom Berenger) rides into town to perform heroic deeds and put an end to bad guys in this good-natured spoof of 1940s B-Westerns that includes all the expected stereotypes of dashing heroes in white hats, helpless damsels in distress, and devious outlaws wearing black. Berenger turns in a charming lead performance and Andy Griffith is hilariously cast against type as an evil cattle baron.

MGM 80's Comedies (3-Disc Set; Checkpoint; Sensormatic; Widescreen) [DVD]
This triple feature thoroughly represents the array of comedy output during the 1980s, a decade in which the genre reigned supreme. If it wasn't the silly spoofery of Mel Brooks's SPACEBALLS, it was the classic farce of DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS or the time-traveling teenage satire of BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. Fortunately, perennial children of the '80s can get all three right here. See individual titles for complete details.

80's Tech [DVD]
While the giant cell phones and simple arcade games of the 1980s are usually celebrated as charming pop-culture artifacts, these now-dated objects were once major technological advances. This History Channel special traces the roots of these inventions, and explores the ways in which the decade's major players (including Sony and Apple) set the stage for a massive digital revolution.
Urban Cowboy (I Love the 80's: Widescreen) [DVD]
John Travolta and Debra Winger star in this cowboy version of SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, in which all the action takes place at Gilley's country-western bar, a rough-and-tumble honky-tonk in the heart of Houston. Travolta plays Bud, a young country farmer who moves to the city to find work at an oil refinery and finds love with Sissy (Winger), a cowgirl of easy virtue and spirit. The two country-western singles fall in love on the dance floor of Gilley's and quickly marry only to discover that their workaday life is harder to cope with than they imagined, lightened only by hard-drinking weekends of glory at Gilley's, where they're both local heroes, line-dancin' and struttin' their stuff until dawn. In between crowd-pleasing rides on the club's mechanical bull, Bud and Sissy struggle to keep their new romance alive despite the competitive attentions of a new cowboy in town, a bull-riding ex-convict (Scott Glenn) who has his eye on Sissy. James Bridges's hard-driving drama glimmers with the intensity of the super saloon, capturing the wild and rough life of the modern cowboy. The soundtrack features musical performances from such greats as Bonnie Raitt, Mickey Gilley, Boz Scaggs, Kenny Rogers, and the Charlie Daniels Band.
Footloose (I Love the 80's; Widescreen) [DVD]
This classic tale of teen rebellion features a delightful combination of dance choreography and realistic, touching performances. When teenager Ren (Kevin Bacon) and his family move from big-city Chicago to a small midwestern town, he's in for a real case of culture shock. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can't quite believe he's living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal. There is one small pleasure, however: Ariel (Lori Singer), a troubled but lovely blonde--who also has a jealous boyfriend. In fact, it is Ariel's dad (John Lithgow), a Bible-thumping minister, who is responsible for keeping the town dance-free. Ren and his classmates want to do away with this ordinance--especially since the senior prom is around the corner--but only Ren has the courage to initiate a battle. Ren's pent-up frustrations cause a confrontation with Rev. Shaw Moore and the local town council as he takes on the small-town establishment struggling to abolish the outmoded ban and revitalize the spirit of the repressed townspeople. Herb Ross's fast-paced drama is filled with such hit songs as the title track and "Let's Hear It for the Boy" and is a classic of 1980s Brat Pack cinema.
Reds (I Love the 80's Edition; Widescreen) [DVD]
Riding high after the box office success of SHAMPOO and HEAVEN CAN WAIT, Warren Beatty used his seemingly limitless power to write, produce, direct, and star in this epic historical romance. The film recounts a particularly eventful period in the life of notorious American communist John Reed (Beatty), who journeyed to Russia to witness the Bolshevik Revolution firsthand. Before that, he met the already wed Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton) in Portland in 1915. However, they shared such a mutual attraction for words, and each other, that soon Bryant was living with Reed in New York City. It was here where they befriended some of the early 20th Century's most recognizable faces: Eugene O'Neill (Jack Nicholson), Emma Goldman (Maureen Stapleton), Max Eastman (Richard Herrmann), and Horace Whigham (George Plimpton). Yet Reed's commitment to his craft caused an endless friction in the relationship, until Louise found her own journalistic voice, leading the couple to Russia at a crucial moment in history. But just when they appeared to have come to a perfect place in their relationship, tragedy struck. REDS is one of the last vestiges of early Hollywood, a broad, sweeping spectacle that is simultaneously thought provoking and unabashedly entertaining. Beatty inserts fascinating interviews with actual participants from that earlier era throughout the film to provide even more context and insight. At a time when Ronald Reagan had just become the president of the United States, Beatty's sympathetic portrait of notorious American communist John Reed seemed even more daring. Yet, as it continues to age, the film only continues to grow in relevance, assuring its rightful place at the top of the Hollywood canon.
Terms of Endearment (I Love the 80's; Widescreen) [DVD]
This Oscar-winning film is both eccentrically funny and an old-fashioned tearjerker. The story centers around the volatile relationship between a mother and daughter spanning 30 years. The various permutations of their lives are examined, including the daughter's bout with terminal cancer. TERMS OF ENDEARMENT is a deeply observed drama about the intimate relationship between a mother and daughter, based on the novel by Larry McMurtry. Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger are at their absolute best, with terrific support from Jack Nicholson, Jeff Daniels, and John Lithgow. Academy Award Nominations: 11, including Best Actress--Debra Winger and Best Supporting Actor--John Lithgow. Academy Awards: 5, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress--Shirley MacLaine, Best (Adapted) Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor--Jack Nicholson.
Racing With the Moon (I Love the 80's Edition; Widecsreen) [DVD]
Two young men enjoy the last days of their boyhood before enlisting in the military during the time of the Second World War. A tender, bittersweet tale of lost innocence and the horrible trauma of social violence.
Ragtime ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]
Based on the acclaimed and popular E.L. Doctorow novel, RAGTIME tells the intricate story of four New York families--three of which are fictional--at the turn of the 20th century, each indicative of that time in American history, and highlighting some of the downsides of following the American Dream. Starving immigrant artist Tateh (Mandy Patinkin) will eventually set off to make his fortune in Hollywood, but not without a chance encounter with Evelyn Nesbit (Elizabeth McGovern in the role of the real-life showgirl). Nesbit was the center of the infamous (and, in the film, the very compelling) Thaw-White murder case, in which her mentally unstable millionare husband Harry K. Thaw (Robert Joy) murdered her lover, the famed architect Stanford White (Norman Mailer). Another storyline follows the disintegration of an upper-class American family headed by Mary Steenburgen (simply named Mother) and James Olson (Father). Their seemingly perfect existence is shattered when black ragtime pianist Coalhouse Walker (Howard E. Rollins), loosely modeled on Scott Joplin, begins to romance a pregnant young woman living in their home (Debbie Allen). Walker, a dignified man, turns to rage when he is tormented by local racists. One of the most impressive moments in this ambitious film is the appearance of veteran actor James Cagney who, at 81, plays feisty Police Commissioner Waldo.
Mommie Dearest ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]
Based on the book by her adopted daughter Christina, MOMMIE DEAREST is the now-legendary tale of Hollywood superstar Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) and the lengths that she went to in order to maintain her public image. After several screen successes, Crawford's plan to stay on top in Tinseltown includes adopting two children, Christina and Christopher, whom she plans on spoiling with love and gifts. As her career flags and her lack of success in her relationships with men chip away at her constitution, Crawford's treatment of her children becomes more and more brutal. Though this domestic horror tale is so over-the-top it that it is often celebrated as high camp, Dunaway's performance remains nothing short of astounding.
Eddie and the Cruisers/Eddie and the Cruisers 2: Eddie Lives! (2-Disc Set) [DVD]
EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS: Back in the early 1960s, Eddie and the Cruisers, a (fictitious) rock band, was the hottest act around. After 20 years, TV reporter Maggie Foley decides to do an investigative story on the band. At the same time, she searches for the missing tapes of the group's last recording, which could provide clues to Eddie's disappearance. The more Maggie researches her story, however, the more she suspects that Eddie Wilson may still be alive... EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS 2: EDDIE LIVES!: The rock star who disappeared when his car ran off the road years ago is living in Canada with a new identity. As the president of Eddie's old record company plans to make millions from the "Lost Tapes" of Eddie and the Cruisers, Eddie is starting up a new band which is soon discovered...and so is Eddie, who must come to terms with himself and his music.
Staying Alive ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]
John Travolta returns as a pumped-up Tony Manero in this sequel to the 1977 hit movie, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. Tony is now a struggling dancer/instructor, looking for his big break in a Broadway show. When he finally lands a small role, personal problems come to the fore as he finds himself torn between two women: Jackie (Cynthia Rhodes, DIRTY DANCING), his loyal girlfriend, and Laura (Finola Hughes), the musical's attractive and flirtatious star. Sylvester Stallone directed and co-wrote the screenplay.
Tucker: The Man and His Dream ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]
Francis Ford Coppola directed this truly American story based on the real-life struggles of one man and his fight against big government and large corporations. In 1945 Michigan, Preston Tucker (Jeff Bridges) created a car for the future equipped with fuel injection, a center headlight, seat belts, a rear engine, disc brakes, shatterproof glass, and a pop-out windshield. With the support of his wife (Joan Allen), his son (Christian Slater), and his business manager (Martin Landau in an Academy Award-nominated performance), Tucker produced fifty of his dream cars. However, Detroit's Big Three, with the help of a Washington senator (played by Jeff Bridges's father, Lloyd, in an uncredited role), set up significant roadblocks. Tucker is investigated for fraud and his plant is closed. Coppola had been planning to make a film based on the life of Preston Tucker since 1974. His own struggle to retain independence from the Hollywood studios mirrors the auto maverick's story. Of the 50 cars Tucker made, 46 are still roadworthy (Coppola and Executive Producer George Lucas each own one). Pop musician Joe Jackson composed the music for the film.
The Hunter ("I Love the 80s" Edition; CD Included; Sensormatic) [DVD]
Steve McQueen's last movie is a fitting tribute to his memorable talent. He portrays real-life bounty hunter Ralph "Papa" Thorson, who made a long career out of apprehending more than 5,000 criminals and bail jumpers. Thorson's tough antics (featuring a few memorable car chases) are tempered by his touching relationship with his pregnant wife Dotty (Kathryn Harrold)--and his love of antique toys and Tchaikovsky. During the course of the film, Thorson chases down fugitives in Illinois, Texas, and Nebraska, as he himself is pursued by a psychotic killer.
Top Gun (I Love the 80's; Widescreen) [DVD]
Maverick (Tom Cruise) is a reckless F-14 pilot who flies by instinct and breaks all of the rules. While attending the Navy's elite air combat training academy, affectionately known as "Top Gun," Maverick romances the civilian astrophysics instructor (Kelly McGillis) and competes with crackerjack pilot Ice (Val Kilmer) for top honors. He is the quintessential rebel, upsetting senior officers with his antics and risk-taking while simultaneously amazing them with his skill. In the end, Maverick overcomes a tragic loss and his need to stand out in the crowd and proves that he can shine as part of a team. Anthony Edwards stars as Maverick's best friend and co-pilot, Goose, and Meg Ryan first garnered attention as Goose's wife, Carole. Superb state-of-the-art aerial photography makes TOP GUN, directed by Tony Scott, one of the most exciting and entertaining films of its genre. This top grossing movie of 1986 is allegedly based on a Navy fighter pilot program at the Miramar Naval Base in San Diego, California, and was filmed on location at the base.
The Escape Artist (I Love the 80's Edition; Widescreen) [DVD]
The story of a young man with an incredible Houdini-like talent who is exploited by a number of greedy adults.
