Eddie Murphy follows up his hot streak of BEVERLY HILLS COP and TRADING PLACES with this mystical action-comedy directed by Michael Ritchie. Murphy plays Chandler "Chan" Jarrell, a man who tracks down lost children for a living. When the beautiful Kee Nang (Charlotte Lewis), a Tibetan priestess, approaches him with the flattering yet disarming declaration that he is "the chosen one," his quest for the illustrious golden child (J. L. Reate) begins. Along the way, Chan uncovers secrets within Chinatown's underbelly and encounters a seemingly endless parade of bizarre and dangerous situations, most often spearheaded by Sardo Numpsa (Charles Dance), the devil's main henchman. It's up to Chan to locate the golden child, then protect him from the evil Sardo, who won't rest until he sees to it that the boy is in his clutches. Not surprisingly, THE GOLDEN CHILD is a comedian's showcase. As Murphy ad-libs his way to the rescue, it appears that Ritchie allowed him the comfort of improvisation throughout the film's production, and that trust in his star pays off. The result is a laugh-out-loud crowd pleaser with a heavy dose of action that alludes to the mystical Asian dramas of the past.

Sue Charlton (Linda Kozlowski), a reporter for Newsday, travels Down Under to write a feature on Australia and its people. She gets a tip to visit a free-spirited bush ranger who was attacked by a crocodile, which he then killed with his bare hands. So Sue heads into the red sands and squalid swamps of Northern Territory outback to a tiny fly-blown burg called Walkabout Creek, where she is greeted by Wally (John Meillon) of Never-Never Safaris. Wally takes her to the pub to meet the infamous Michael J. "Crocodile" "Mick" Dundee (Paul Hogan), who charms her with his swagger and grit. He offers to lead her though the bush, as she's "just a Sheila," to where he was attacked. This comment raises her city-girl feminist hackles and she strikes out alone. But when Mick saves her from the grasp of a toothy reptile, she ducks under his wing and into his heart, and invites him to return with her to New York City. Here in the sophisticated urban jungles of Manhattan, the bushman has finally met his match, as he endures New York streets of the 1980s, filled with drug dealers, muggers, transvestites, and prostitutes. Sue finally gets more than just a story as the "wonder from down under" rocks the Big Apple to its core.

Another classic from writer-director John Hughes (SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB), this film features a star turn from Broderick as the charismatic Ferris. Watch for Charlie Sheen as the juvenile delinquent in the police station and comedian Louie Anderson in a brief appearance as a flower deliveryman.

Jake Briggs (Kevin Bacon) has been in love with Kristy Bainbridge (Elizabeth McGovern) since he was a teenager. They marry right after college and embark on their new life together, with all of its ups and downs. Told largely through the eyes of narrator Jake, a would-be author who is prone to fits of fanciful, humorous hallucination--such as lawn-mowing neighbors breaking into song--this John Hughes film deals with the trials and tribulations of growing up and the responsibilities that come with marriage, adulthood, jobs, and children. Alec Baldwin appears as Davis McDonald, Jake's best friend, who is living life in the fast lane in New York, making Jake doubt his complacent, suburban lifestyle. Bacon and McGovern are believable as wide-eyed newlyweds dealing with the realities of "happily ever after," such as finding a job, paying the mortgage, and dealing with in-laws. The closing credits are enlivened by a parade of celebrities, including Kirstie Alley, Ted Danson, Woody Harrelson, Olivia Newton-John, Stewart Copeland, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, John Candy, Penny Marshall, Ally Sheedy, and many others.

While Alison is traveling to reunite with her tidy law school boyfriend, Gib is on the road to meet a beautiful girl his best friend promises him is "a sure thing." Before too long, Gib and Alison's bickering inflames the driver, who promptly deposits the two with their suitcases on the side of a lonely highway thousands of miles from their destination. As the misadventures pile up, the initially contentious pair begin to take a liking to one another--but do these two dare fall in love? Rob Reiner's initial attempt at romantic comedy pays subtle homage, with gentle lyricism, to the classic screwballs of early Hollywood. The film is buoyed by the stellar performances of the two leads, Cusack (in one of his first significant roles) and Zuniga, who are reminiscent of the great studio pairings of the past.

An adaptation of the legendary biblical tale, director Bruce Beresford's film stars Richard Gere as King David, favorite of the God of Israel. Although only a shepherd boy, David is anointed as heir to the throne of Israel by Samuel (Dennis Quilley), who is disgusted with the weakness of Saul (Edward Woodward). When David brings the protracted war with the Philistines to an end by defeating their champion Goliath (George Eastman) in battle, he is celebrated by his people but must flee the country to avoid being killed by Saul, whose jealousy he has aroused. When Saul and his sons finally die in battle, David assumes the throne--but not without a sense that it is covered in blood. As time passes, he finds himself in vicious battles with neighboring tribes to ensure the survival of the Israelites. Despite David's many achievements, the exercise of power has a corrupting influence on the patriarch, and ultimately, even he is no longer favored by his God. Donald McAlpine's photography is superb, as is Beresford's direction.

Francis Ford Coppola directed this truly American story based on the real-life struggles of one man and his fight against big government and large corporations. In 1945 Michigan, Preston Tucker (Jeff Bridges) created a car for the future equipped with fuel injection, a center headlight, seat belts, a rear engine, disc brakes, shatterproof glass, and a pop-out windshield. With the support of his wife (Joan Allen), his son (Christian Slater), and his business manager (Martin Landau in an Academy Award-nominated performance), Tucker produced fifty of his dream cars. However, Detroit's Big Three, with the help of a Washington senator (played by Jeff Bridges's father, Lloyd, in an uncredited role), set up significant roadblocks. Tucker is investigated for fraud and his plant is closed. Coppola had been planning to make a film based on the life of Preston Tucker since 1974. His own struggle to retain independence from the Hollywood studios mirrors the auto maverick's story. Of the 50 cars Tucker made, 46 are still roadworthy (Coppola and Executive Producer George Lucas each own one). Pop musician Joe Jackson composed the music for the film.

After the death of King Henry and his young son and heir Edward VI, Henry's 15-year-old great-niece, Lady Jane Grey (Helena Bonham Carter), is chosen to rule by a group of palace conspirators who vow to keep the country Protestant and out of the hands of the Church of Rome. She is crowned, against her will, and her reign lasts only nine days, until Henry's legitimate daughter Princes Mary, by first wife, the Catholic Catherine of Aragon, and her supporters rally around and crown her Queen. Jane is imprisoned in the Tower of London and eventually beheaded, along with her husband, Guilford Dudley (Cary Elwes), for what is presumed to be their part in the conspiracy. The film chronicles, fairly accurately, Jane's growth, during her extremely short reign, from a bookish intellectual to a confident, and politically progressive young woman who refuses to conform to the religious hypocrisies of 16th Century England.
