Director David Zucker (AIRPLANE, NAKED GUN) returns to the satire genre with AN AMERICAN CAROL. The political spoof stars Kevin Farley (brother of the late comedian Chris Farley) as Michael Malone, a left-wing documentary filmmaker with a strong likeness to the controversial real-life Michael Moore. The world has long put up with Malone's cynical films and so-called liberal antics. But when he announces his plans to abolish the Fourth of July, the consensus is that he's finally gone too far. Can the three spirits who arrive to haunt Mr. Malone change his stubborn world view? Kelsey Grammer plays one of the three ghosts intent on bringing out Malone's patriotic side through a series of wild adventures filled with celebrity cameos by Gary Coleman, Leslie Nielsen, and Dennis Hopper, to name a few. Malone may still have a loyal fan following, but for this trip he's all on his own. A cross between A CHRISTMAS CAROL and films like SCARY MOVIE, AN AMERICAN CAROL uses ghosts as the main vehicle for its pro-America jokes. Together, the spirits of General Patton, President Kennedy, and President Washington drive the plot of this spoof, which unlike many recent satires, pokes fun at the more liberal end of things.

Writer/director Joshua Michael Stern (NEVERWAS) tackles American politics in his second feature film. Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner) is just your below-average Joe. He works in an egg factory, likes to knock back a few too many beers, and is a single parent to 12-year old Molly (Madeline Carroll), a bright spitfire who does her best to keep her dad on the straight and narrow. Patriotic Molly insists that apathetic Bud do his civic duty and vote in the upcoming presidential election, a tight race between Republican incumbent Andrew Boone (Kelsey Grammer) and Democratic candidate Donald Greenleaf (Dennis Hopper). Soon the media and both candidates descend upon Bud's hometown of Texico, New Mexico, when it's determined that his vote wasn't counted and will decide the outcome of the entire presidential election. Now that Bud is a "somebody"--there's even a "Bud Cam" capturing his every move--will he be swayed by visits to Air Force One and the "Bud Ball" held in his honor, or will he be the voice of the American people and vote for the better candidate? The lengths the candidates go to in order to win Bud's vote are high points of the film, as they find themselves supporting initiatives that are completely opposed to their platforms at the urging of their campaign managers, played by Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane. Grammer is well cast as Boone, and it's a hoot to see counterculture icon Hopper in this light. Costner makes Bud likable despite the loser stereotype he personifies. But this film belongs to Carroll, a lovely young actress who can steal a scene with one look. If nothing else, SWING VOTE is a reminder that even though politics may be a game, every single vote really does count.

A normal video store clerk, Ed (McConaughey), doesn't realize what he's getting himself into when he allows a television executive (DeGeneres) to begin filming his life 24 hours a day. The resulting media circus makes for an entertaining social commentary about how important (and, perhaps, detrimental) an issue television has become in our lives.

Stuart Gordon's fun science fiction adventure stars Dennis Hopper as space trucker John Canyon and Stephen Dorff as his sidekick and trainee Mike Pucci. Traveling through depths of space, John and Mike attempt to transport a supersecret cargo to Earth. Along the way they pick up beautiful Cindy (Debi Mazar), who agrees to marry gnarled old John if he can smuggle her to Earth so she can see her mother. The three get themselves in and out of all sorts of adventures with pirates, aliens, and the military, who all seem to want to get their hands on the secret load. The cargo itself turns out to be troublesome in its own right, and the space truckers must pull out all the stops if they are to reach Earth alive. Special effects master Greg Cannom supplies the multitudes of monsters and robots that inhabit this world, while Simon Lamont creates a great atmosphere with visonary art direction. With SPACE TRUCKERS, Gordon proves that he is one of the few directors who can take a small budget and make the film look like a $100-million blockbuster.
