This south seas adventure is a classic example of low-budget filmmaking in action. Acclaimed Director Edgar G. Ulmer uses miniatures, rear-projection, and stock footage to give the illusion of on-location lavishness to this largely set-bound, low-budget affair, and the results are rewarding, for the right viewer. Brawling deep-sea divers Clancy (John Carradine) and Burke (Frank Fenton) find adventure while whetting their whistles at a club called "The Isle of Forgotten Sins." The proprietor, Marge (Gale Sondergaard), is Clancy's sweetheart, and when a shooting brings the police into her place, she and the girls sail off with Clancy and Burke on an adventure that involves robbing Krogan (Sidney Toler) and Johnny Pacific (Rock Vallin) of $3 million in gold. There's lots of swimming, deep-sea diving, and double-crossing, as everyone is out to claim the gold for themselves, and even pals Burke and Clancy can't stop fighting for five minutes. If all this wasn't enough, a big monsoon is headed their way, ready to wash the whole lot of them out to sea. It's great to see Carradine and Sondergaard, two veterans villains, here given the chance to be heroic, earthy sweethearts. This forgotten gem is worth uncovering for Ulmer fans, and those interested in obscure cinema.

Poor, perennially orphaned Shirley washes up from a shipwreck into the arms of a photogenically crusty lighthouse keeper who raises the little castaway with pluck and determination, qualities she'll need when the nasty truant officer tries to separate the two. Myra Breckenridge [DVD]

starting at

$5

MYRA BRECKENRIDGE may be the first punk manifesto, a celebration of pop culture nihilism. A precursor to films by directors like David Lynch, and perhaps influenced by those of avant-garde Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, this outrageous, searing, blackly comic cult film satirizes Hollywood, homosexuality, America, family, and more. Myron Breckenridge (Rex Reed) is a frustrated homosexual who undergoes a sex-change operation, against the advice of his doctor. As a result, Myron becomes Myra (Raquel Welch), a stunningly beautiful woman with a rocket of a body. Myra moves to the South and enrolls at a university, where her adventures include sodomizing a Southern man--and stealing his girlfriend while she's at it. In general, the bodacious, lewd Myra wreaks havoc on Southern conventions in this outrageous classic film. Once thought to be "unfilmable," Gore Vidal's book was the satiric source material for this film. Originally Rated X in 1970, the film may seem less shocking today, but it retains a truly bizarre quality. Among the most memorable moments is the appearance of Mae West, top-billed and still bawdy as ever in her 70s, singing a comically sultry number.

John Ford's memorable screen version of John Steinbeck's epic novel of the Great Depression--often regarded as the director's best film--stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy (John Carradine), Tom finds his extended family, including Pa (Charles Grapewin) and his indomitable Ma (Jane Darwell), packing their ramshackle truck to seek work in the fields of California. As the family treks across the country, their dissolution begins with the deaths of Tom's grandparents at close intervals. When they arrive in California, the Joads find only an abundance of poverty-stricken migrants like themselves and little in the way of potential work. Yet, ever resilient, they maintain their dignity, hoping for the best. Among the talented cast, Fonda does perhaps the best work of his career, as does Qualen in the film's most haunting sequence. Director of photography Gregg Toland captures the suffering and the weathered, luminous nobility of the Joads and the other uprooted, drifting families, creating striking images equal to the best work of Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans. In a stirring film that stands as a microcosm of the depression experience of millions, Ford gives poverty a human face in a way that was rare then and even rarer in the decades to follow as Hollywood films with a sense of class consciousness dwindled like a species nearing extinction.

"Paris. May 9, 1940. The ninth night of the ninth month of a war too uneventful to be taken seriously and too far away to worry about," says the opening legend of Jules Dassin's REUNION IN FRANCE. While the indolent French upper class enjoy its nightly entertainment, Michele de la Becque (Joan Crawford) prepares for her vacation in the South of France. However, she is annoyed that her fiancé, government official Robert Cortot (Philip Dorn), won't accompany her: He has defense duties. She goes alone, but her complacency is short-lived. The Germans invade, bypassing the Maginot Line. Michele is caught up in people fleeing their homes. She returns to Paris a changed woman. But Robert has also changed: He's become a Nazi collaborator. So when Michele meets escaping prisoner of war Pat Talbot (John Wayne), it's no surprise that she decides to help him. Twelve months after the U.S. entered WWII, REUNION IN FRANCE was released. It is an intriguing account of occupied France filmed by director Jules Dassin and director of photography Robert Planck in crisp, clear prenoir images. Wayne gives a good-humored performance, Dorn is secretive and intense, and Crawford goes from haughty complacency to anxious concern.

The Last Hurrah [DVD]

John Ford's gripping portrait of the twilight of politician Frank Skeffington--adapted from the Edwin O'Connor novel based on the life of celebrated Boston mayor James Curley--reflects the director's abiding pessimism about the fate of American cities. Skeffington (Spencer Tracy) is about to begin his fifth and likely last campaign for mayor of a city in New England. A champion of the poor and downtrodden (especially if they happen to be Irish), the mayor is not above a bit of corruption if it will bring them comfort, a policy that has earned the enmity of both the city's WASP faction and the clergy. The mayor's journalist nephew, Adam Caulfield (Jeffrey Hunter), accompanies him to a wake and observes the dual nature of the politician: He shamelessly works the crowd for support but later pressures grasping undertaker Johnny Degnan (Bob Sweeney) into reducing the exorbitant funeral costs. Upon hearing that some bankers have reneged on providing a loan for a slum clearance project, Skeffington bursts into their elitist private club and gives them hell. Tracy and an excellent supporting cast, including Pat O'Brien, John Carradine, Frank McHugh, Donald Crisp, and Basil Rathbone, enliven Ford's nostalgic tribute. Curley, who considered the film an invasion of privacy, sued the studio, which settled out of court.

Before Martin Scorsese wowed the world with MEAN STREETS, he teamed up with legendary producer Roger Corman for BOXCAR BERTHA, a rollicking period drama that features a memorable performance from Barbara Hershey. Hershey is "Boxcar" Bertha Thompson, a Depression-era woman who loses her father in an airplane accident. Joining up with controversial union leader Big Bill Shelley (David Carradine), Bertha is forced into a life on the run when a group of conservative witch hunters targets Shelley as a Communist. Along the way, Shelley and Bertha fall into a life of underground crime, which includes stealing from railroad bosses. Their run comes to a crashing halt when the extremely powerful railroad company catches up with Shelley and exacts a nasty revenge. Based on the book SISTER OF THE ROAD by "Boxcar" Bertha Thompson and Ben L. Reitman, Scorsese's film is an entertaining romp through an exciting chapter in American history. His sure-handed direction confirms the director's ability to tackle traditional formula pictures, although his desire to create a new cinematic realism wouldn't surface until 1973's MEAN STREETS.
