Based on a series of comics by underground cartoonist Robert Crumb, this X-rated animated film brings a cynical eye to the idealism of the 1960s. It's a world where black people are crows, cops are pigs, rabbis are lions, and cats--like New York University student Fritz (voiced by Skip Hinnant)--are substituted for guilt-ridden white guys who want to be poets but mainly smoke pot and engage in group sex. After a drug bust by a couple of bumbling pigs makes him an outlaw, Fritz sets fire to his NYU dorm and hits the road in search of self-discovery. The crazy cat steals a car, starts a race riot in Harlem, and ends up stuck outside San Francisco with a group of sadistic revolutionaries led by a junkie biker rabbit. Throughout these adventures, Fritz's pot-addled self-righteousness gradually gives way to a deeper understanding of life, but perhaps too late to extract himself from a terrorist plot. FRITZ THE CAT was director Ralph Bakshi's first feature, and it carries many of his future themes--ultra bleak urban landscapes, cynically guarded idealism, grotesque sexuality, and raucously over-the-top moments of violence.

Shady characters populate this edgy thriller from Andrzej Sekula (CUBE 2). Lacey Chabert sheds her PARTY OF FIVE persona to play a sex-obsessed prostitute who seduces Angus MacFadyen's lusty professor. The normally nice Lauren Holly also plays against type as a deranged kidnapper. Billy Zane and Meat Loaf play a hit man and a drug runner, respectively, rounding out a nasty cast of chracters. This darkly funny film features multiple storylines that crash into each other with violent results.

Spike Lee brings the life of African-American leader Malcolm X (an intense Denzel Washington in an Oscar-nominated performance) to the big screen in this sprawling, epic biographical drama. Born Malcolm Little, son of a Nebraska preacher, on May 19, 1925, he became one of the most militant leaders and charismatic spokesmen of the black liberation movement before his assassination at the Audubon Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 1965. The film sweeps through his early life as a small-time hustler and thief with his friend Shorty (Lee), his conversion to Islam in jail, and his subsequent life as a controversial spiritual leader and husband of Betty Shabazz (Angela Bassett). Malcolm's tragic assassination is presented as a conspiracy of Nation of Islam leaders; the film shows how his philosophy has been realized in the lives of others who have been moved by his words. Filmed with great visual flair by Lee, the film is a work of entertainment as much as it is a historical artifact. Washington captures the spiritual conversion of the hero with a sincerity that is entirely as believable and ultimately moving as it was in the book that inspired the film, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X.

Impinging on David Lynch territory while adding a dash of film noir to the melee, Danish director Nicholas Winding Refn (PUSHER) serves up a startlingly original feature film in FEAR X. Harry Caine (John Turturro) is a security guard whose wife Claire (Jacqueline Ramel) was shot and killed outside the shopping mall where he works. Intent on finding the perpetrator of the crime, Harry carries out a tireless search for the murderer. Footage garnered from the mall security cameras offer little in the way of explanation, and after exhausting all rational avenues, Harry becomes plagued by hallucinations and an obsession with the house across the street, which he believes may offer a clue to the killer's identity. Breaking into the depleted house, he finds a picture of a woman, Kate (Deborah Unger), and traces her approximate whereabouts to a vague location in Montana. Convinced Kate has something to do with his deceased wife, Harry continues on his quest by taking up residence in a peculiar Montana hotel which is bathed in rich red colors, and appointed with antiquated wooden furnishings. At this point, Refn really delivers his stylistic tour de force. Drawing on strange encounters with mysterious figures who may or may not know the whereabouts of Kate, while offering spooky visualizations of the thoughts pulsing through Harry's mind as he loses his grip on the sane world, Refn violently drags his characters to the close of the movie. With an evocative score from musician Brian Eno interjected dynamically throughout, and a sometimes bewildering, but always thought-provoking script from Refn and co-writer Hubert Selby Jr., FEAR X is a refreshing, inspiring piece of work that is destined to be discussed long after it reaches its conclusion.

Real-life brothers Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez star in this biopic about the Mitchell brothers, two of the pioneers in the porn industry. Brothers Artie (Sheen) and Jim (Estevez) produced some of the 1970s most popular porn features such as BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR and launched the careers of numerous porn stars. Unfortunately, as the brothers became more and more successful and their lives became devoted to the excesses common to the seventies, their animosity towards one another became so great that their relationship ended in murder. A hugely entertaining expose on the porn industry during the seventies on the order of BOOGIE NIGHTS, RATED X is an impressive effort from director Estevez.

Animator Ralph Bakshi's frenzied glimpse into the sleazy 1970s New York of pimps, drag queens, and Times Square perversity, this hallucinatory romp centers on Michael (Joseph Kaufman), an underground cartoonist who lives with his shrill Jewish mother and mobster Italian father, and escapes the urban squalor via his art. The stage is set for a crescendo of explosive violence when Michael gets romantically involved with sassy black bartender Carole (Beverly Hope Atkinson), arousing his father's racist fury as well as the jealousy of Shorty, Carole's violent, legless barfly devotee. Bakshi's second film remains one of his boldest and most brilliant, thanks to its uncompromisingly bleak vision, over-the-top violence, satirically exaggerated racial stereotypes, and frank sexuality. But beyond all the wildness beats a real heart and piercing honesty. Bakshi's technique of integrating live action and old films with different styles of animation works perfectly in this loosely autobiographical series of hallucinatory vignettes. This hilarious, horrifying, bittersweet portrait of urban alienation and artistic struggle still resonates with a raw power that has lost none of its force in the passing years.

Among the most notorious cult films in American history, SNUFF is famous for promoting the urban legend of the "snuff" film. In actuality, this is an Argentinean exploitation film loosely based on the Sharon Tate murder. The film follows the exploits of a bearded man named Satan who leads a gang of biker chicks in a series of killings. The footage that caused a fairly major furor over the film's release was a short sequence tacked onto the end that shows the director of the movie supposedly disemboweling the lead actress. Presented as reality, this footage caused a major uproar and has made the film the subject of endless speculation.

A dispute between scientists over cryogenically freezing maniacal killer Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder) or researching his amazingly regenerative tissue is literally cut short when Jason hacks up the research staff. Trapping herself in the cryogenic chamber with him, Rowan (Lexa Doig) freezes Jason, halting his rampage. Four hundred years later the two are discovered by the student research craft Grendel. Both scientist and her subject are revived in space in the year 2455 when Earth has been destroyed, but Jason Voorhees proves what horror fans have known for years, that his killing spree continues indefinitely. Slaughtering most of the crew, Jason does meet his equal in a feminine android (Lisa Ryder) only to receive an upgrade making this veteran killing machine of 10 movies an even more unstoppable force. Although 2455 seems no different from the 2002 release date of this tenth film in the FRIDAY THE 13TH series, JASON X does breathe life into the long-running horror series with computer generated effects and a witty script by Todd Farmer. Some clever self-referencing is particularly effective in a virtual reality segment that confuses Jason and, of course, an ending that leaves an opening for yet another entry.
