The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection * by Helen Reddy (CD - 05/02/2006)
"The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection *" (05/02/2006) Easy Listening Reddy, Helen, Capitol/EMI RecordsRecording information: 1971 - 1980. Along with Melissa Manchester, Barbara Streisand, and a few others, Helen Reddy was one of the defining voices of women's soft pop in the 1970s. Her hit "I Am Woman" became an anthem, and her other major charters--"Delta Dawn" and "I Don't Know How to Love Him," among them--are memorable as well. There are plenty of other gems here among the 22 tracks that feature Reddy's mix of easy-going arrangements, breezy vocals, and strong sentiment. Well-selected and assembled, WOMAN I AM: THE DEFINITIVE HELEN REDDY is arguably the most comprehensive sampler of the artist's talents on the market.

Greatest Hits by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 (CD - 10/25/1990)
"Greatest Hits" (10/25/1990) Easy Listening Mendes, Sergio, A&M Records (USA)Personnel includes: Sergio Mendes (piano); Lani Hall (vocals). Engineers include: Larry Levine, Henry Lewy, Bones Howe. Unlike vocalist Astrud Gilberto, pianist Sergio Mendes was highly respected as a musician in his native Brazil from the very beginnings of bossa nova in the early '60s. Mendes and his combo, Brasil '66, were also the most Americanized of the Brazilian semi-expatriates who enjoyed stateside success at the height of the bossa nova craze. Brazil '66, which featured gifted singer Lani Hall, could occasionally even sound like a slightly Latin version of the Fifth Dimension-without the soaring strings and deluxe production values. Mendez was a shrewd leader, and he understood that much of '60s pop music was ripe for bossa nova treatment. He successfully covered Beatles tunes several times, with his version of "Fool On The Hill" being a particularly winning example, as well as songs by Simon & Garfunkle, Burt Bacharach, and even Cole Porter-whose "Night And Day" seemed tailor-made for the sensual bossa rhythms. From time to time, Brasil '66 would also introduce the songs of fellow countrymen, such as Jorge Ben's exuberant, "Mais Que Nada," sung in Portuguese.

Definitive Hits by Herb Alpert (CD - 03/27/2001)
"Definitive Hits" (03/27/2001) Easy Listening Alpert, Herb, A&M Records (USA)Personnel includes: Herb Alpert (trumpet); Janet Jackson, Lisa Keith (vocals); Tijuana Brass. Producers include: Herb Alpert, Jerry Moss, Burt Bacharach, Jose Quintana, Randy Badazz. Compilation producers: Herb Alpert, Larry Levine, Mike Ragogna. Includes liner notes by Herb Alpert and Quincy Jones. Digitally remastered using 20-bit remastering technology by Doug Sax and Robert Hadley (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California). Before his run at the top of the easy-listening charts, Herb Alpert was already a music-industry veteran, writing and producing hits for Sam Cooke and Jan & Dean. Alpert also deserves a place in history as co-founder and owner of A&M Records, one of the most successful independent labels of all time. A solid 20-track compilation spanning Alpert's career, DEFINITIVE HITS covers the trumpeter/singer/label executive's glory years--the 1961-'68 stretch between "The Lonely Bull" and the Burt Bacharach-penned vocal showcase "This Guy's in Love with You." However, it also conveniently gathers material from the post-Tijuana Brass period when Alpert specialized in easy-listening fusion hits like the disco-tinged jazz-funk of 1979's "Rise" and the adult-contemporary R&B of 1987's "Diamonds," which features A&M Records' then-new star Janet Jackson on lead vocals. But, of course, the real meat of the collection is the brilliantly arranged suburban exotica of "Spanish Flea," "A Taste of Honey," and "Whipped Cream," along with other fine examples of Alpert's Latin-tinged pop.
