"Party Tyme Karaoke: Love Songs, Vol. 1" (06/06/2006) Easy Listening Karaoke, SybersoundUnlike a lot of karaoke discs, some volumes in Sybersound's Party Tyme Karaoke series give karaoke enthusiasts the benefit of being able to choose between instrumental and vocal versions. The discs typically begin with the instrumental versions and then repeat the program with the vocal versions of the same songs. The renditions of the songs are functional -- the vocals tend to be somewhat buried in the mix, just loud enough to guide you without overpowering your voice -- but hardly substitute for the originals. Party Tyme Karaoke: Love Songs, Vol. 1 includes instrumental and vocal versions of Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You," Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," Olivia Newton-John's "I Honestly Love You," Heatwave's "Always and Forever," and Rod Stewart's "Have I Told You Lately." ~ Andy Kellman

"Romantic Saxophone: Love Songs to Remember" (03/05/2002) Easy Listening Various Artists, Columbia River Entertainment GroupThis installment of the Romantic Saxophone series features breathy, instrumental arrangements of some memorable pop moments. Standouts include a striking version of Phil Collins' "One More Night" that perfectly conveys the yearning and perceived loss inherent in the original, as well as an upbeat, percussive take on Huey Lewis' Back to the Future anthem "Power of Love." Like so many of these collections, the synthesized backing tracks threaten to overwhelm throughout. However, strong melody prevails in the end. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Hooray for Love: Great Gentlemen of Song, Vol. 1" (07/23/1996) Easy Listening Various Artists, Capitol/EMI RecordsOriginally released on Capitol (31774). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano). Audio Remixer: Bob Norberg. Recording information: 11/??/1947-12/19/1966. Director: Wayne Watkins. Capitol presents the first in a double-dip tribute to those marvelous-to-maudlin male crooners who dominated the entertainment industries during the two decades that followed the Second World War. This was the golden age of dressing up and posing while putting across pop songs in a debonair and often sentimental manner. Some of these names became household words, like "Spam" or "Pez." First and foremost come the juggernauts of suavity: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Al Martino, Mel Torm?, Vic Damone, Dick Haymes, Gordon MacRae, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Capitol's co-founder Johnny Mercer. While not every singer, no matter how well groomed, could achieve such ubiquitous fame, a comparable if decidedly peripheral place in the sun was occupied by various crooners whose long-playing records existed in many a middle class record collection. Redolent of Brylcreem and Vitalis, this group included Bobby Darin, Jack Jones, Andy Russell, Bob Manning, England's Matt Monro and Australia's Frank Ifield. A special echelon is reserved for the authentically hip vocalists who actually had more than passing or forfeited connections with Afro-American culture and real jazz. They are Tony Bennett, Lou Rawls, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, and Chet Baker. Each singer on this anthology exudes a distinctive male persona. Ideal for cocktail parties, affected lounging, and aimless carousing. ~ arwulf arwulf

"Wedding Album: Songs That Say I Love You" (07/29/1992) Easy Listening Various Artists, Quality MusicUnknown Contributor Roles: Dan Hill; Freddie Jackson; Heatwave; Louis Armstrong; Luther Vandross; Minnie Riperton; Mona Lisa; Nickolas Ashford; Patsy Cline; Peabo Bryson; Anne Murray; Roberta Flack; Valerie Simpson; Billy Ocean. The only thing more touching than one wedding song is a dozen heart warmers scripted for that most special occasion. The inclusion of Ashford & Simpson's "Solid As a Rock" may be too up-tempo and rhythmic for the occasion, but different strokes for different folks. More appropriate are Luther Vandross' "Here and Now," Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson's "Tonight I Celebrate My Love," Heatwave's "Always and Forever," and "Best of Love" by Mona Lisa. This works better as a honeymoon album; while some songs miss the mark as typical wedding songs, all are apropos for starry-eyed committed lovers. ~ Andrew Hamilton

"Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song/Love Will Keep Us Together" (03/14/2006) Easy Listening Conniff, Ray, Collectables Records2 LPs on 1 CD: ANOTHER SOMEBODY DONE SOMEBODY WRONG SONG (1975) / LOVE WILL KEEP US TOGETHER (1975). Sony Collectables continues its excellent Ray Conniff reissue series with a two-fer from the pop legend's prolific mid-'70s period. Originally released on the Columbia label in 1975, Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song and Love Will Keep Us Together featured the bandleader/composer/multi-instrumentalist and his backup singers tackling easy listening pop classics ("My Eyes Adored You"), Conniff originals ("I Need You Baby"), as well as some of the decade's most popular singles like Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy" and the Eagles' "The Best of My Love." Also included are two bonus cuts, "On the Run," the controversial -- for Conniff that is -- "Love Theme From An X-Rated Movie," and the previously unreleased "Jackie Blue" -- the latter was a hit for Ozark Mountain Daredevils. This is the first time on CD for both releases. ~ James Christopher Monger
