"Great Contemporary Instrumental Hits/I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" (03/14/2006) Easy Listening Conniff, Ray, Collectables Records2 LPs on 1 CD: GREAT CONTEMPORARY INSTRUMENTAL HITS (1971)/I'D LIKE TO TEACH THE WORLD TO SING (1972) . Originally released on Columbia (30755) & Columbia (31220). Liner Note Authors: Morgan Ames; Ray Conniff. Recording information: 05/19/1971/12/??/1971. Arranger: Ray Conniff. This discount-priced two-fer combines two successive Ray Conniff albums, Great Contemporary Instrumental Hits, originally released in the summer of 1971, and I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, from the winter of 1972. As usual, Conniff is interested in presenting easy listening versions of recent pop hits, but the two albums take different approaches. The key word in the title of the unfortunately named Great Contemporary Instrumental Hits (a bit generic, no?) is "instrumental," since the album marked a return for Conniff to recording songs without their lyrics. He did not record without vocals, however, as his perky singers trace the melodies with wordless syllables ("ba-ba," "da-da," etc.). I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, on the other hand, as its title implies, does feature vocals. This approach sometimes sounds sillier, actually. The Cher hit "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" was never what you'd call an authentic treatment of gypsy life, but it is odd hearing the chorus, which refers to prostitution, cheerily sung by a chorus. Similarly, the double-entendre lyrics of Melanie's "Brand New Key" are rendered with an apparently complete lack of understanding of their sexual innuendo. And Free Movement's "I've Found Someone of My Own" has its theme of infidelity and free love belted out with all the zest of "On Top of Old Smokey." In the world of Ray Conniff, anything could be scrubbed down and turned into innocent pop. Some of these songs remain familiar 30 years later, while others have faded into history, giving the album the air of a time capsule. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Instrumental Gems of the Fifties" (12/15/2004) Easy Listening Various Artists, Collectors' Choice MusicIncludes liner notes by Bob Hyde. Instrumental Gems of the Fifties rounds up 40 hits, some of which are otherwise difficult to find on CD. Although most of the tracks are orchestral hits, the inclusion of Ernie Freeman's "Raunchy" and Santo & Johnny's "Sleepwalk" add variety and a little context, considering that many of these orchestral intrumentals coexisted and competed with rock & roll records on the charts. At least in part, this package documents a side of the '50s music scene that is nearly forgotten, considering that rock & roll often dominates any discussion of the era's pop music. Compiled and annotated by the late Bob Hyde and cross licensed from multiple labels, Instrumental Gems of the Fifties is a treasure chest of classic and historic recordings. ~ Greg Adams

"Instrumental Burt Bacharach" (11/25/2003) Easy Listening Various Artists, Fabulous (USA)Instrumental Burt Bacharach is just one in a long line of MIDI-based recordings put out by the people at Fabulous Records. The song choices are elementary -- based on the track listings of greatest-hits packages, no doubt -- and do represent some of the best that Bacharach has to offer. "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" "The Look of Love," "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," and many more are here, but not in an organic setting. This is not an actual orchestra by any stretch, but keyboard facsimiles of the trumpets, flutes, harmonicas, and guitars that make up the standard equipment of Bacharach's signature songcrafting style. The keyboard samples are state-of-the-art, but they are just not as warm and inviting as the real deal. Ultimately, Instrumental Burt Bacharach is a fairly impressive exercise in MIDI implementation that is better suited for use in commercial background music applications than it is for serious listening. ~ J. "Great Instrumental Sounds: Midnight Sax, Vol. 2" (03/15/1996) Easy Listening Various Artists, EMI-Capitol Special MarketsCEMA Special Markets' Great Instrumental Sounds: Midnight Sax, Vol. 2 is a collection of ten slick, easy listening interpretations of such familiar pop hits as "Always on My Mind," "Endless Love," "Amanda," "Saving All My Love for You," "Yesterday Once More," "Sometimes When We Touch" and "I Will Always Love You." Like its predecessor, Midnight Sax, Vol. 1, almost all of the songs on Midnight Sax, Vol. 2 are arranged like an innocuous Kenny G sampler. It's pleasant enough as aural wallpaper, but it's not necessarily seductive, and it never rises above the level of background music. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Instrumental Christmas Classics: Christmas Sax" (03/15/1996) Easy Listening Various Artists, EMI-Capitol Special MarketsEMI-Capitol Special Markets' Sax for Christmas is an entertaining collection of laid-back, polished pop instrumental interpretations of Christmas carols like "Joy to the World," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "O Come All Ye Faithful," "We Three Kings," "Silent Night," "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Good King Wenceslas." There isn't much variety on the album -- each track has the same slick, synthesized instrumental backup and lush sax leads -- but anyone who enjoys Kenny G or smooth jazz in that style should enjoy Sax for Christmas. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"More Instrumental Gems of the '60s" (12/15/2004) Easy Listening Various Artists, Collectors' Choice MusicIncludes liner notes by Bob Hyde. Liner Note Author: Bob Hyde. The sequel to the two-CD Instrumental Gems of the '60s is just one disc and lower in quality, though it's still a worthy, intelligently assembled compilation of 20 of the more memorable non-rock instrumental hits of the decade. It's perhaps a bit too heavy on the schmaltzy easy-listening component, with entries from Bert Kaempfert ("Wonderland By Night"), Acker Bilk ("Stranger on the Shore," in retrospect the last gasp of pre-World War II-type easy-listening music), and Percy Faith. And it's hard to imagine that anyone with a passing interest in the genre hasn't found Martin Denny's "Quiet Village" on numerous other CD reissues. But there are some neat, idiosyncratic selections as well, like Kokomo's zany orchestral-boogie rendition of a Grieg piano concerto ("Asia Minor"), Billy Strange's familiar "Munsters Theme," Boots Randolph's uptempo novelty "Yakety Sax," and Kai Winding's "Telstar"-ish "More," with its creepy keyboards. South America is represented with Walter Wanderley's "Summer Samba" and Sergio Mendes' "Mais Que Nada" (which actually has vocals), jazz great Wes Montgomery pokes his head out with his MOR version of the Association's "Windy," and the Ventures bring things to a rousing conclusion with their famous "Hawaii Five-O" -- which sounds more like rock than easy listening, but who's complaining? ~ Richie Unterberger
