"The Plays the Music of the Rolling Stones" (02/13/1995) Easy Listening London Symphony Orchestra, Esx Entertainment, Inc.Personnel includes: The London Symphony Orchestra; Don Jackson (conductor, arranger); Dennis Burnside, Chris McDonald, Gary Weaver (arrangers); The London Pop Choir. Recorded at CTS Studio, London, England. Includes liner notes by Elin Guskind. All songs written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards except "As Tears Go By" (Mick Jagger/Keith Richards/Andrew Loog Oldham) and "Time Is On My Side" (Jerry Ragavoy). This is part of ESX Entertainment's Symphonic Rock series. Consumer advisory: The London Symohony Orchestra Plays the Music of the Rolling Stones, a 1994 Essex Records release, is a budget album that is not to be confused with RCA Victor's 1994 album Symphonic Music of the Rolling Stones, also by the London Symphony Orchestra. The latter release is a big-budget effort sanctioned by the group and featuring vocals by Stones lead singer Mick Jagger and other prominent performers. The more modest Essex album features a few vocals by the London Pop Choir. Attempts to present rock & roll in a pop orchestra context are always a bit odd, and this album, which presents 14 of the Stones' biggest hits, is no exception. Horns and strings pick up the melodies, while the beat is maintained by a regular rock drumkit and electric guitars are sometimes heard. Songs that used strings originally -- "Lady Jane," "Angie," "She's a Rainbow" -- come off best, though for the most part these versions simply point up the superiority of the Stones' originals. ~ William Ruhlmann
