"Phaedra" (07/23/1996) Rock & Pop Tangerine Dream, Virgin Records (USA)Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese (guitar, organ, Mellotron, synthesizer, bass instrument); Peter Baumann (flute, electric piano, organ); Chris Franke (keyboards, Moog synthesizer). Widely considered one of Tangerine Dream's masterworks, fallout from the sonic phenomenon that is PHAEDRA can still be found lingering in the ambient movement of the early '90s and in much of contemporary electronica. The aural architecture that the band built from scratch remains unparalleled. Tangerine Dream was truly ahead of its time--the four epic-length tracks on PHAEDRA revealed a band that fully understood--and loved to manipulate--the complex array of knobs, dials, and switches that protruded from their synthesizer facades. The title track is an almost spooky exercise in synth/sequencer tension and dynamics: while eerie atmospheres of Mellotron go head to head with spiraling Moogs, dense, humming sequencer webs percolate along the surface, motile and mobile. The album's closer, "Sequent C," leaves the listener breathless, as black electronic clouds form and dissipate and the surrounding space becomes corporeal sound. PHAEDRA remains one of the seminal recordings of the electronic movement, and stands up--even years later--as an original, stunning piece of music.

"The Bootmoon Series: Cleveland 1986" (07/12/2005) Electronic Tangerine Dream, United States Of Distribution LTD.Tangerine Dream: Chris Franke, Edgar Froese, Paul Haslinger. Originally part of a fan-based live bootleg recording project called Bootmoon, this recording of the pioneering and influential German electronic outfit Tangerine Dream is part of a series of unadorned live performances (the band habitually added post-production instrumentation and otherwise altered its sound on its official live releases). This mid-1980s performance in Cleveland presents a series of cinematic-sounding compositions that make full use of the available electronic technologies of the period, including sequencers and synthetic percussion, to heighten the sense of musical drama.

"The Bootmoon Series: Sydney 1982 [Digipak]" (03/09/2004) Rock & Pop Tangerine Dream, United States Of Distribution LTD.Originally part of a fan-based live bootleg project called Bootmoon, this recording of the pioneering and influential German electronic outfit Tangerine Dream is part of a series of unadorned live performances (the band habitually added post-production instrumentation and otherwise altered its sound on its official live releases). Done in Sydney in 1982 (tracks such as the brooding "Ayers Majestic" are nods to notable Australian locations), this double-CD album documents the group at a fascinating point in its evolution, when fully structured compositions, such as the stately "Logos (Part One)," were steadily replacing its original loose, free-form improvisations.

"Live in Montreal, Canada [Digipak]" (02/17/2004) Electronic Tangerine Dream, United States Of Distribution LTD.Tangerine Dream includes: Edgar Froese. Recorded live in Montreal, Canada in 1977. Originally part of a fan-based live bootleg recording project called Bootmoon, this recording of the pioneering and influential German electronic outfit Tangerine Dream is a rare example of an actual unadorned live performance (the band habitually added post-production instrumentation and otherwise altered its sound on its official live releases). Heard here at a mid-1970s creative peak, the group produces sounds that orbit around avant-garde jazz, spacey electronica, and opaque, otherworldly sonic ruminations.

"Mota Atma" (04/29/2003) Rock & Pop Tangerine Dream, TDPOriginal score composed by Edgar and Jerome Froese. Recorded at Pinnacle Studios, London, England. Recording information: Pinnacle Studios, London, England (2003). Arrangers: Edgar Froese; Jerome Froese. MOTA ATMA, the score for an obscure German film released in 2003, continues in the tradition of Tangerine Dream's best soundtrack work. Featuring driving rhythms, Mobius strips of sequenced percussion, and stirring synthesizer melodies, the overall mood is triumphant and upbeat. The opener, "The Courage to Lose," sets up the heraldic theme of the album, with mighty gusts of synthesized bravado giving way to an intentionally aggravating tautness, the aural equivalent of a racecar speeding winningly but still in pointless circles. Composer/leader Edgar Froese, master of the controlled burn, follows this with similar exercises in scintillating tension. "For the Summit Only" makes use of percolating sequencer and stereo placement effects to create a gorgeous dynamic stillness. "No Pleasure No Pain" introduces a welcome lower-register element: a bouncy bassline juxtaposed with an airy, cornet-like synth lead; the bass/treble dialogue suggests the interconnectedness of pleasure and pain. The most interesting track here is "Snow on Angels Feather," one of the most gentle and moving songs in TD's repertoire. That they are still capable of surprises like this is a hopeful sign that Tangerine Dream is in no danger of losing its edge.

"Inferno" (09/03/2002) Rock & Pop Tangerine Dream, Tangerine Dream Int./TDI (Germany)Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese, Jerome Froese (keyboards, sequences); Iris Kulterer (percusion, timpani). Additional personnel: Jayney Klimek, Barbara Kinderman, Iris Kulterer, Claire Foquet, Jane Monet, Bianca Acquaye, Bry Gonzales (vocals). Recorded live on October 7, 2001. Personnel: Babs Gonzales (soprano); Edgar Froese, Jerome Froese (keyboards, sequencer); Iris Kulterer (kettle drum, percussion). Audio Mixers: Edgar Froese; Dave Dixon . Recording information: St. Marien zu Bernau Cathedral (10/07/2001). Arguably, Tangerine Dream's Edgar Froese is to rock what Gunther Schuller is to jazz -- the German innovator who has fought to take his genre out of the streets and the smoky bars and move it to prestigious concert halls that usually host classical orchestras. Or, as a hip-hopper would say, Froese took rock out of the 'hood just as Schuller took jazz out of the 'hood. Tangerine Dream is essentially rock -- as in art rock and progressive rock -- but the classical-influenced, very European-sounding group certainly never pretended to be rock & roll. And Froese's outfit is as ambitious as ever on Inferno, a highly conceptual CD that is based on poet Dante Alighieri's Divina Commedia (Dante's Inferno). Recorded live in a European church on October 7, 2001 -- 34 years after Tangerine Dream's formation -- Inferno finds Froese leading a lineup that includes his son, Jerome Froese, on keyboards and sequencers and Iris Kulterer on percussion and kettle drums. In addition to appearing on Inferno as a musician, Kulterer is heard as part of a seven-member female vocal choir. Together, the participants provide an enriching blend of art rock, electronica, classical, and European church music. Those who have in the past accused Tangerine Dream of being pretentious will most likely call Inferno pretentious; those who have been praising Froese's artistry will most likely assert that he should be proud to add Inferno to his resum?. It's all a matter of perspective -- what is ambitious, risk-taking, and visionary to one person is pretentious and bloated to another. Inferno is unlikely to win over anyone who isn't already a believer, but those who have admired Tangerine Dream's work over the years will, more than likely, find Inferno to be a welcome addition to the group's catalog. ~ Alex Henderson

"Rubycon" (12/11/2001) Rock & Pop Tangerine Dream, Virgin Records (USA)Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese (guitar, Mellotron, organ, synthesizer, gong); Peter Baumann (piano, electric piano, prepared piano, organ, synthesizer); Chris Franke (prepared piano, organ, synthesizer, gong). Recorded at The Manor, Shipton On Cherwell, England in January 1975. This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. RUBYCON is an undisputed classic in the vast Tangerine Dream canon, referenced by many of the new electronica generation. But at the time of its creation, Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann were themselves young men experimenting with technology. RUBYCON is split into two sections, both of which offer the band's trademark mix of ululating sequencers, ghostly synthetic twilight, and mysterious electronic effects. Part One begins with intergalactic whispers, before coalescing into one of the Dream's most uniquely designed rhythm patterns. Part Two moves the sequencers' BPMs up a notch, matching them with whistling electronics and howling, deep space atmospheres. Truly astonishing stuff, and essential to anyone interested in the advancement of both electronic music and Krautrock in general.

"The Bootleg Box Set, Vol. 1" (08/12/2003) Rock & Pop Tangerine Dream, Castle Music Ltd. (UK)Tangerine Dream, early electronic/classic rock/prog innovators, released THE BOOTLEG BOX SET VOL. 1 as an import with rare recordings of live performances. The five concerts include Euro sites of Sheffield, London, Croydon, Bilbao, and Berlin.and are from the mid-1970s. After the success of their Emerson, Lake & Palmer bootleg boxes, Sanctuary Records approached Tangerine Dream in hopes of releasing similar sets, starting with the band's early years. Problem was the Dream didn't have many tapes of their early years, so they had to turn to their fans. The result, The Bootleg Box Set, Vol. 1, is sourced from the Tangerine Tree, a series of radio and audience recordings that had previously been distributed freely among fans -- with the band's consent -- through the Internet and snail mail. If you're a fan who's hardcore enough to lay down the cash for a seven-disc set where the sound quality varies greatly, chances are you have this in its original Tangerine Tree version, plus the three extra shows that aren't included here. (Tree owners at least get some new artwork that mimics the old logo for bootleg label Swinging Pig, plus the satisfaction of knowing some money has reached the artist.) For fans who are not Internet-savvy and can't tell a B&P from an FTP, the commercially released version makes for an easy way to bliss out to what many consider the band's golden age. The tracks here feature the band at their improvisational best, with each member feeding off one another and the unwieldy nature of early synths adding some extra unpredictable energy. The 20-minute-or-so jams offer more of a surreal landscape than the sterile futurism of later years and the occasional dissonance will be surprising to newcomers, especially when Edgar Froese reaches for his screaming guitar. You also get to hear Ricochet without the overdubs (the Croydon gig) and a rare show with Michael Hoenig on keyboards (the London gig). Great stuff, but tolerating subpar sound quality on about half the set will be the deciding factor for most. Gigantic thuds of bass turn muddy and fuzzy, tapes get garbled and bumpy, and a fan who claps rhythmically during a beatless improvisation is especially annoying (put the headphones on and you can hear someone telling him to "shut up"). Until Froese is willing and able to dig up some source tapes for these years (not likely), this will have to do. ~ David Jeffries
