Discovery by Daft Punk (CD - 03/13/2001)
"Discovery" (03/13/2001) Electronic Daft Punk, Virgin Records (USA)Daft Punk: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem Christo. Additional personnel includes: Todd Edwards, Romananthony. "Short Circuit" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "One More Time" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. In 1997, this French electro-dance duo made a huge intercontinental splash with its debut album, HOMEWORK, mixing disco, house, funk, techno, and more. While Daft Punk's second recording still focuses on the maximum accessibility that earned its debut such high marks, there's less of an obvious focus on pop hooks. Irony and house beats are the order of the day, and an eclectic thread runs throughout DISCOVERY. "Digital Love" sounds like the theme to a '70s sitcom as realized by the Buggles. "Nightvision" is a mellow, wordless, Quiet Storm-meets-Eno soundscape, while in an interpolation sure to gain plenty of attention, "Superheroes" marries a Barry Manilow sample to an unrelenting house beat. Ultimately, DISCOVERY is less of a mission statement than its predecessor, but no less danceable or listenable.

Talkie Walkie by Air (France) (CD - 01/27/2004)
"Talkie Walkie" (01/27/2004) Electronic Air (France), Astralwerks (Record Label)Air: JB Dunckel, Nicolas Godin. Additional personnel includes: Jessica Banks, Lisa Papineau (vocals); Malik Mezzadri (flute); Michel Colombier (piano); Joey Waronker (percussion). Recorded at Revolvair Studio, Paris, France. After the ambitious robotic quirkiness of 10,000 HZ LEGEND, French duo Air streamline their sound with TALKIE WALKIE, a dreamy outing that hearkens back to the group's revered debut, MOON SAFARI. Gone are the guest vocalists, replaced by Air themselves, Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin, who gleefully distort their voices to suit their unique soundscapes. "Venus" sets the tone with its gently gliding keyboards, spare beats, and light acoustic guitar strumming. In fact, this instrumentation supplies the foundation for many of TALKIE WALKIE's tracks, including the catchy "Cherry Blossom Girl," the bossa-nova-based "Universal Traveler," and the haunting "Alone in Kyoto" (from the lauded film LOST IN TRANSLATION). Working with renowned producer Nigel Godrich, Dunckel and Godin have crafted a collection of atmospheric compositions poised at the halfway point between waking and dreaming.

Trance 3 CD Box Set [2/7]
"Essential Trance [Box]" (02/07/2006) Electronic Various Artists, Moist MusicDJs: Johan Gielan; Vicious Vic. The driving, hypnotic club music known as trance is featured in this generous, genre-defining, three-disc box set. Related to house and the more minimal strains of Detroit techno, trance gained prominence in the 1990s as the sound of choice for DJs intent on driving dancers to sustained, long-term ecstasy. Steady beats pulse and shift while minimal synthesizer lines are repeated over long cycles, creating a drone-like, endlessly looping effect. ESSENTIAL TRANCE will please fans of the genre, yet it also serves as a fine introduction to those unfamiliar with this particular branch of electronica. The first disc, dedicated to the work of Dutch DJ Johan Gielen, is a case study of one man's deck-wrecking. Disc two, entitled CLUBBER'S DELIGHT: THE TRIBAL PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT, features tracks by Robbie Rivera, Peter Presta, and others major artists from the scene, while the third, entitled WORLD OF TRANCE, features cutting-edge sound explorations by international trance artists. The entire set represents this singular style's ability to liberate both mind and booty at once.

Talk to la Bomb by Brazilian Girls (CD - 09/12/2006)
"Talk to la Bomb" (09/12/2006) Electronic Brazilian Girls, Verve (USA)Brazilian Girls: Sabina Sciubba (vocals); Didi Gutman (keyboards, background vocals); Jesse Murphy (bass guitar, background vocals); Aaron Johnston (drums, background vocals). TALK TO LA BOMB provides more of the breezy, postmodern international pop introduced on the Brazilian Girls' self-titled debut. Mixing in dance grooves, lounge, dub, Latin flavors, downtempo, jazz, trip-hop, and rock, the Brazilian Girls offer up a fizzy concoction that balances an organic live sound with electronica flourishes. Lead chanteuse Sabina Sciubba sings in five different languages, positioning the Brazilian Girls as the house band for the new global village. While not as startlingly fresh as their first disc, TALK TO LA BOMB finds this eclectic New York City-based combo in a pleasurable holding pattern.

Tender Buttons by Broadcast (CD - 02/04/2008)
"Tender Buttons" (02/04/2008) Electronic Broadcast, WarpRecording information: 2005. For their first album as a duo (the band consists solely of singer Trish Keenan and multi-instrumentalist James Cargill on TENDER BUTTONS), Broadcast took two years to shake up the densely layered electronic latticeworks of their previous efforts and return with a more straightforward--but still intoxicating--approach. Combining distorted minimalist hooks with Keenan's more floral singing style--the duo balance poppier gems such as "Black Cat" and "Goodbye Girls" with darker, more mournful material like "Minus 3" and "Corporeal." The familiar Francoise Hardy and Stereolab influences remain, but, at times, sonic similarities to Suicide and Portishead emerge. TENDER BUTTONS departs from the established swirl of classic Broadcast, but there are still enough mutated mellotrons, enveloping optigons, and electro trickery to satisfy the most ardent fans.

"Moon Safari" (01/27/1998) Electronic Air (France), CarolineAir: Nicolas Godin (spoken vocals, talk box, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, Wurlitzer, organ, Mini-Moog synthesizer, vocoder, synthesizer, glockenspiel, bass, tambourine, shaker, percussion, drum programming, sound effects, background vocals); Jean Benoit Dunckel (spoken vocals, strings, syrinx, piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurliitzer, organ, Melotron, clavinet, Mini-Moog synthesizer, synthesizers, glockenspiel, hand claps, sound effects, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: David Whitaker (conductor); Enfants Square Burcq (vocals); Beth Hirsch (spoken vocals); P. Woodcock (acoustic guitar, tuba); Eric Regert (organ); Marlon (drums); Stephane "Alf" Briat, Caroline L. (hand claps). Producers: Jean-Benoit Dunckel, Nicolas Godin. Engineers: Jean-Benoit Dunckel, Nicolas Godin, Stephane "Alf" Briat. Principally recorded at Around The Golf studio and Gang Studio, Paris, France. Their trans-Atlantic notoriety may have come amidst compilations of French house and electronic scenes, but Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel are not just another pair of Gallic beat-miners. Like DJs and studio wizards, the duo known as Air does construct their records pastiche-style; but instead of unleashing dancefloor-friendly "tracks", they come up with mellow abstractions for retro-minded chill-out rooms, flaunting their analog instrumentation and love for make-out melodies every step of the way. MOON SAFARI, Air's full-length debut, is like a fuzzy, blissful daydream in which a glowing ambiance pervades over a crossroads of '60s French pop, '70s Philly soul and '80s Eurodisco. Rarely does the tempo reach mid, and when it does ("Kelly Watch The Stars" and "Le Voyage de Penelope"), it's on the strength of funky synth-pop grooves. Overall, their sounds are rarely less than kaleidoscopic, enveloping the listener in happy, high-IQ muzak. If it sounds somewhat disposable, it's because all good pop should. It is the fact that one can't leave Air's aural confections behind that makes MOON SAFARI great.
