Cosmic Game (enhanced) *
"Cosmic Game" (06/13/2005) Electronic Thievery Corporation, EslThis is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Washington, DC-based sophisticates Thievery Corporation (producers Rob Garza and Eric Hilton) made several albums of superb down-tempo electronica prior to THE COSMIC GAME, and each release refined the duo's sensuous blend of deep, head-nodding beats, exotic world-music melodies, and lounge-ready atmospherics. This 2005 record builds on the strengths of the Corporation's previous albums, offering more stylish, club-targeted soundscapes to excellent effect. The series of all-star guests that parades through the album raises the Corporation's profile even higher. The Flaming Lips contribute additional instruments and vocals to the dreamy opener "Marching the Hate Machines (Into the Sun)," while the trip-hop-flavored "Revolution Solution" features Perry Farrell on vocals. Indian themes surface with vocalist Gunjan and sitar player Arjuna Pashwami on "Satyam Shivam Sundaram," and Verny Varela's singing gives the crowning touch to the bossa nova track "Ambicion Eterna." Even David Byrne makes an appearance, on the spacey mariachi boogaloo "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter." This fine mix of elements results in Thievery Corporation's most pop-oriented and accessible release, without sacrificing any of the group's ear-pleasing artistry.

Reflections
"Reflections" (06/22/2004) Electronic Van Dyk, Paul, Avex (Hong Kong)Personnel: Paul Van Dyk (vocals, programming); John McDaid (vocals, piano); Second Sun, Vega 4, Jan Johnston, Antoine, Hemstock, Jennings (vocals); Atomek Dogg, Trooper Da Don (rap vocals); Bruce Gainsford (guitar); Simon Walker (bass); Bryan McLellan (drums). Recorded at White Room, Nucleus Studios, Berlin, Germany and Eden Studios, London, England. Hong Kong edition includes a bonus disc featuring 10 tracks, "Nothing But You (Berlin Mix)", "That's Life (PvD Mix)", "Buenaventura (Reflections Vinyl Remix)", "Time Of Our Lives (UK Club Mix)", "Crush (PvD Album Mix)", "Reflections (Club Mix)", "Like A Friend (Vandit Club Mix)", "Homage (Remix)", "Crush (PvD Remix)", and "Crush (Vandit Club Mix)." As both a club DJ and a record producer, Paul Van Dyk is known for fusing the crowd-pleasing aspects of house and trance, and 2003's REFLECTIONS follows suit, while adding a string of pop hooks and catchy refrains to the usual mixology. The use of pop elements and guest vocalists on the album indicate Van Dyk may be moving away from his more progressive tendencies and toward--perhaps--a more crossover-directed sound. "Like a Friend," for example, features a sung moral lesson about friendship and trying to live with a clean conscience, adding some thematic weight to Van Dyk's percolating keys and beats. On "Homage," a wispy female lead gives the disco-fueled production the feel of a Donna Summer song. In general, the hook-centered thinking on the album balances nicely with the artist's trademark skill mixing up four-on-the-floor beats with heady atmospherics and shuddering effects. The combination heightens the appeal of this frothy electronica set.
Talkie Walkie (+bonus DVD)
"Talkie Walkie" (03/08/2004) Electronic Air (France), Virgin Records (Hong Kong)Air: JB Dunckel, Nicolas Godin. Additional personnel includes: Jessica Banks, Lisa Papineau (vocals); Malik Mezzadri (flute); Michel Colombier (piano); Joey Waronker (percussion). Recorded at Revolvair Studio, Paris, France. Asian only release features a bonus DVD (Region code: 0/NTSC format) with six videos. After the ambitious robotic quirkiness of 10,000 HZ LEGEND, French duo Air streamline their sound with TALKIE WALKIE, a dreamy outing that hearkens back to the group's revered debut, MOON SAFARI. Gone are the guest vocalists, replaced by Air themselves, Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin, who gleefully distort their voices to suit their unique soundscapes. "Venus" sets the tone with its gently gliding keyboards, spare beats, and light acoustic guitar strumming. In fact, this instrumentation supplies the foundation for many of TALKIE WALKIE's tracks, including the catchy "Cherry Blossom Girl," the bossa-nova-based "Universal Traveler," and the haunting "Alone in Kyoto" (from the lauded film LOST IN TRANSLATION). Working with renowned producer Nigel Godrich, Dunckel and Godin have crafted a collection of atmospheric compositions poised at the halfway point between waking and dreaming.
