"Onsumothasheeat" (03/13/2001) Electronic Craig, Carl, ShadowThis is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Carl Craig. Includes liner notes by Carl Craig. Invited to construct a mix album from the rather thin back catalog of Shadow Records, Carl Craig almost proves up to the task, finally drafting several imports from his own Planet E label to finish the job. Though Shadow exists mainly to release the domestic versions of full-lengths by a few European producers, Craig sifts through the scattershot discography and deftly outlines his continuing meld of academic techno and earthier jazz. He opens with a great track by Jimpster, one of his closest fellow fusionaires, then looks to the Detroit-connected John Arnold for the drum-heavy "Universal Mind" (originally released on Transmat). One of the better Shadow LPs, Pop Artificielle by Atom Heart's lb project, gets plundered for two tracks: covers of soul giants James Brown ("Superbad") and Prince ("The Future"). Elsewhere, Craig recruits brother Reggie for the jacking track "Second Wind," and Recloose for the atmospheric, Lonnie Liston Smith-inspired "Landscaping." Pulling together a dozen or so disparate tracks into a discernible whole is quite a task; it's a tribute to Carl Craig's ear that this mix comes off at all. ~ John Bush

"Piano Works" (08/24/2004) Electronic Armstrong, Craig, Sanctuary (USA)Enhancements include a film trailer. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Craig Armstrong. Craig Armstrong is a pop music composer noted for his many film scores. On PIANO WORKS, he performs 19 solo piano pieces, some of which were originally written for major movies. For example, "Satine's Theme" is from MOULIN ROUGE!, "Morning Breaks" is from ROMEO + JULIET (Baz Luhrmann's version), and "Glasgow Love Theme" is from LOVE ACTUALLY. This music is dreamy and lush, and each track can be interpreted as a small dose of sonic imagery. As one might expect, all of the music on PIANO WORKS is played on a grand piano. However, it's easy to mistake certain sounds for keyboards. In order to create the rich sound on some of these tracks, Armstrong employed various studio effects. For instance, he uses backward piano loops on "Sunrise" and extensive studio fades on "Diffuse." Additionally, he mutes select strings on "Gentle Piece." "Childhood 2" is the one exception to the piano-only rule. On this piece, Armstrong's tranquil chords are complemented by the distant voices of children playing in a park.

"Fabric 25" (05/10/2006) R&B Craig, Carl, Fabric RecordsPersonnel: Third Ministry Of Faith (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Alex from Tokyo; Joel Mullis; Kenny Larkin. Audio Remixers: Gavin "DJ Face" Mills; Sam Holt. Recording information: Art Of Dance; ColliPark Studio, Atlanta, GA; Defrey Studio, Paris, France; Past Boys Studio, Bologna, Italy; The Zone Studios, Norcross, GA. Arrangers: Alex from Tokyo; Justin Chapman. Part of a long-running series from the label that's one of the prime movers of the genre, this seamless live set of club techno from Detroit mixmaster Carl Craig incorporates the African-inflected James Brown-isms of "Imbalaye" and the shifting R&B textures of Dark Comedy's "Good God" in pursuit of the perfect dance experience. Some tracks are little more than a bass riff, as in DJ Yoav B.'s "Energize": hard and sweaty techno this isn't, but Craig's innovative subtleties penetrate the psyche and percolate down to the hips.

"The Space Between Us" (02/24/1998) Electronic Armstrong, Craig, Caroline DistributionPersonnel includes: Craig Armstrong (vocals, conductor, piano, keyboards, programming); Richard T. Norris, Marius De Vries (programming); Paul Buchanan, Elizabeth Fraser. Producers: Craig Armstrong, Marius De Vries. Engineers include: Alan Douglas, Andy Bradfield, Neil Davidge. Personnel: Craig Armstrong (piano, keyboards, programming); Richard Norris (programming). Audio Mixers: Mark "Spike" Stent; Andy Bradfield; Craig Armstrong. Recording information: Air Studios, London, England; Angel; Ca Va Studios, Glasgow, Scotland; Christchurch Studios, Bristol, England; Olympic, Mayfair, Westside. Arranger: Craig Armstrong. Craig Armstrong scored the sweeping string arrangements for Massive Attack's PROTECTION. It is therefore fitting that his debut album should see release through the Bristol band's Melankolic imprint. Nor should it surprise anyone that THE SPACE BETWEEN US is a veritable waterworks of strings, harps, and longing. To the classically trained Armstrong's credit, the album's resplendent romanticism never becomes soggy or overbearing. Even as the strings welter and arc in dizzy, heaven-bound spirals, a shadowing of spare downtempo electronics maintains an attractively lugubrious atmosphere. THE SPACE BETWEEN US is mostly instrumental, though former Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser graces "This Love" with a heart-stopping vocal turn. She blazes brilliantly against Armstrong's flowering backdrop, as does Paul Buchanan's Brian Ferry-like delivery of "Let's Go Out Tonight." Armstrong's gift for simple and sensitive melodicism surpasses the crass, tear-jerking histrionics in which many of his peers wallow. "Laura's Theme," "Glasgow," and Armstrong's original setting for ROMEO AND JULIET's oft-scored balcony scene prove him the equal of icons like Nino Rota and Frances Lai and suggest that cinema is Armstrong's true calling. Sure enough, Armstrong hit the silver screen in 1999 with his score for Jake Scott's PLUNKETT & MACLEANE.

Recording information: AIR Studios; Apollo Studios; Cava Sound Workshops; Mayfair Recording Studios; North Studio; Olympic Studios, London, England. Photographer: Rick Guest. Unknown Contributor Role: Mogwai. Arrangers: Stephen Hilton; Craig Armstrong. While the man has numerous film scores and soundtracks to his credit, AS IF TO NOTHING is only Craig Armstrong's second foray into the world of studio recordings. The follow-up to 1998's THE SPACE BETWEEN US sees Scottish-born Armstrong blending his signature highly emotive piano and string arrangements with soft, atmospheric electronica. The result is a spacious soundscape that sounds like the score to a non-existent film. Assisting Armstrong in this emotional journey are Mogwai, Photek, Evan Dando, King Crimson, and even U2 frontman Bono, who offers a sobering performance on Armstrong's re-working of "Stay (Faraway, So Close)." These various vocal accompaniments do break up the score quality of the album, yet they also enhance its ebb-and-flow ambience. The lead track, "Ruthless Gravity," was used in the 2004 Daniel Craig vehicle LAYER CAKE. Armstrong also uses other musical themes found throughout AS IF TO NOTHING in several of his proper film scores, including LOVE ACTUALLY, RAY, and THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

"Plunkett & Macleane [Original Score]" (06/29/1999) Electronic Original Soundtrack, Astralwerks (Record Label)Original score composed by Craig Armstrong. The score for the feature film starring Liv Tyler and Robert Carlyle, Plunkett & Macleane alternates somber orchestral passages reminiscent of Gorecki's Third, the modern classical standby, with a few electronically enhanced moments more in league with Armstrong's compatriots in Massive Attack and Alpha. ~ Keith Farley

"House Party 013: A Planet E Mix" (07/03/2001) Electronic Craig, Carl, NexteraThis is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Carl Craig and DJ Peter Anthony. Personnel includes: Carl Craig, DJ Peter Anthony. Audio Mixers: Carl Craig; Peter Wohelski. Audio Remixer: Carl Craig. Recording information: Electron Lab, Detroit, MI (11/1999); Electron Labs, Detroit, Unites States (11/1999). House Party 013 is a collection of Planet E classics dedicated to the people of the Czech Republic and released on the country's Next Era label (the obvious connections between the two heavily industrial regions -- Eastern Europe and Detroit -- are obvious and unspoken). Just abrasive enough to satisfy fans of harder, Detroit-style techno, but with plenty of dancefloor attitude and house grooves to please clubfans, the collection tracks a few of Craig's Planet E classics ("Galaxy" by BFC, "Floor" and "Steam" by Paperclip People, "Stevie Knows" by Designer Music) plus a bevy of selections from other Planet E artists (Recloose's "Soul Clap 2000," Common Factor's "North Nights," Alton Miller's "Extasol") that prove surprisingly amenable to club consumption when compacted together into a 60-minute mix. ~ John Bush

"Abstract Funk Theory" (05/07/2002) Electronic Craig, Carl, Obsessive RecordsThis is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Carl Craig. Photographer: Jon Parkin. Another installment in the U.K.-based Obsessive label's Abstract Funk Theory series places the listener in the able hands of producer and label head Carl Craig. (No further introduction necessary.) Within the span of an hour, Craig serves up an invaluable history lesson consisting of '80s funk, techno, electro, and otherwise. This is not a mix; rather, this offers each track in its full glory. And if it wasn't made in Detroit, it has ties to the city -- or more specifically, the city's radio waves and the high school parties that went down in its northwest corner during the early part of that decade. Those who have only heard reverential stories about radio DJ the Electrifying Mojo and late club DJ Ken Collier's influential, open-minded, mind-opening, and barrier-breaking taste-making will have the spirit of the inspirational figures' sets shooting through their ears with these selections. The biggest testament to the legendary party scene that helped spawn Detroit techno is present in the form of A Number of Names' "Sharevari" (the disc misspells the title as "Shari Vari"), the ultra-decadent Italo disco-inspired tribute to the ultra-chic and ultra-elitist scene. Moving in a roughly chronological fashion, Craig rifles through a stack of other personal favorites, beginning with the ten-minute version of George Clinton's electronic funk landmark "Atomic Dog" and concluding with Rhythim Is Rhythim's "The Dance." A fair majority of the tracks that fall between still sound ahead of their time, though X-Ray's "Let's Go" (a track by Derrick May, Juan Atkins, and Juan's brother, Aaron, which was the first 12" released on May's Transmat label), a bounding screwball of a number with drunken exclamations of "Surf's up, baby!" and whatnot, is definitely an exception to that notion. Three unimpeachable Juan Atkins classics highlight the disc, including Cybotron's "Alleys of Your Mind," which kick-started Detroit's electronic music legacy along with the aforementioned "Sharevari" in 1981. Channel One's "Technicolor" and Model 500's "Night Drive" are the other Atkins-related productions found here. Other slots are reserved for Kevin Saunderson and Santonio Echols' Reese & Santonio ("Forcefield"), Craig's B.F.C. ("Galaxy"), and the B-52's, whose stiff/loose "Mesopotamia" became an underground dance classic thanks to Mojo and the party scene. Whether reminiscing or getting schooled, a good time for all is guaranteed. ~ Andy Kellman
