"DE9: Transitions *" (11/01/2005) R&B Hawtin, Richie, Mute RecordsOne of the masters of minimalist techno, electronica artist Richie Hawtin serves up another superb program with DE9: TRANSITIONS. Hawtin's creations are extremely sophisticated and cerebral, full of carefully crafted atmospheres and subtle detail that passes through the listener's mind like a chain of associations. At the same time, the music is pulsing, primal, and full of molecular urgency. This is IDM that works both on the dancefloor and in the armchair, and is equally engaging either way.

"This Is Progressive Trance" (01/31/2006) Electronic Various Artists, Hypnotic (USA)Another overstuffed, middling compilation from the Cleopatra-affiliated Hypnotic label, This Is Progressive Trance crams a couple hours of unmixed tracks and a DVD into one set. Despite the title's indication, the set is far from definitive, and most of the no-name artists appear twice, so there's really not much variety, and most progressive trance fans would prefer to hear the tracks mixed anyway. (Another irritating thing is that some of the artists use the same names as other, more popular producers who have nothing to do with progressive trance.) The DVD, dubbed "an audiovisual mix," was filmed at a club in Las Vegas. ~ Andy Kellman

"Everything Ecstatic, Vol. 2" (01/24/2006) Electronic Hebden, Kieran, Domino Recording Company USA (USA)An unusual companion piece to Four Tet's lauded 2005 full-length outing, EVERYTHING ECSTATIC, PARTS I & II presents a DVD of videos for each track on the former album and a CD EP. The latter disc features two reworked tunes from ECSTATIC--a considerably extended version of the glitchy "Turtle Turtle Up" and a percussive variation on "Sun Drums and Soil"--and three additional tracks, including the pulsing "Watching Wavelength" and the frenetic (and aptly titled) "This Is Six Minutes." Although this release isn't the best thing for newcomers, it's sure to please diehard fans of the revered British electronica artist. DVD Features: Track Listing 1. A Joy 2. Smile Around The Face 3. Fuji Check 4. Sun Drums & Soil 5. Clouding 6. High Fives 7. Turtle Turtle Up 8. Sleep, Eat Food, Have Visions 9. You Were There With Me 10. And Then Patterns

"A Lively Mind [CD & DVD] [PA]" (06/06/2006) Electronic Oakenfold, Paul (Remix DJ), MaverickPersonnel: Paul Oakenfold (vocals); Grandmaster Flash, Pharrell Williams, Ryan Tedder, Brittany Murphy (vocals); Joseph Saddler (keyboards); Ian Green (programming). Paul Oakenfold has been at the top of the DJ/producing game since the 1980s, and 2006's A LIVELY MIND found him still going strong. The house music icon shows off many of his familiar skills here, which can be both a strength and a liability. But while Oakenfold may not be on the cutting edge of the scene anymore, he still knows how to work an infectious house groove to perfect advantage. A LIVELY MIND sparkles with high-profile guest stars, including actress Brittany Murphy on the thumping opener "Faster Kill Pussycat," Pharrell Williams on the driving disco jam "Sex 'n Money," and hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash on "Set It Off." But it is Oakenfold's reliably pleasurable beats, samples, and top-notch production that distinguish the effort.

"Master-View" (11/02/2004) R&B Hexstatic, Ninja Tune (USA)MASTER VIEW includes a bonus DVD. The CD with packed-in DVD format is just right for the multimedia minded Hexstatic. They've gone down this road before with the CD/CD-ROM set Rewind, but DVDs are much easier for the general consumer and can hold a lot more at a much higher quality. To add the excitement, some of the videos are in 3-D, but it's the old red/blue kind that's been around since the '50s -- not the better, polarized lense kind -- and the videos you'd really want to see in 3-D aren't always the ones that are. Oh yeah, there's the music, too. So how are the tunes? Well, there are more ideas and innovations in the video, with Hexstatic sounding no different than they did four years ago. There are the usual instructional record samples coupled with the same old funky bass and breakbeats, and even that tired Japanese female vocal device is retrodden here. That said, they're wonderful architects of songs, with every track here being as solid as they are soundtracky. "Chase Me," "L-Virata," and "Salvador" overcome that "heard it all before" feeling on second listen and keep growing in appeal. A decent album for the background, but the huge, dual-layer DVD ups the ante with a video for each song, a video megamix, and a bunch of audio extras that add up to hours of exploration. Don't come here looking for the next big sound, but fans of the Coldcut/Ninja Tune sound and aesthetic are going to have their remote in hand for more than a couple evenings. ~ David Jeffries

"Leben" (11/16/2004) Electronic Schiller (Trance), RadikalThis release includes a bonus DVD. Personnel: Schiller ; Kim Sanders, Mila Mar, Sarah Brightman, Veljanov. German trance-pop sensation Schiller continued to build upon its amazing success with Leben, the Christopher von Deylen-led act's third album and most streamlined yet. Building upon the success of the hit single "Dream of You" from Schiller's previous album, Voyage, von Deylen loads up Leben with a number of similarly styled trance-pop songs sung in heavily accented English. In addition to vocalist Peter Heppner, who'd sung "Dream of You," there is a return appearance by Kim Sanders and features for additional English-singing vocalists: Mila Mar, Alexander Veljanov, Maya Saban, and contemporary classical queen Sarah Brightman. The results are unsurprising. Von Deylen doesn't try anything especially new or adventurous over the course of Leben; rather, he sticks to the formula that has proven so successful for him, namely light trance highlighted by occasional poetic pop-song moments. The sort of trance produced by von Deylen drifts back and forth between meditative new age soundscape and effortless downtempo dance music, and the pop-song moments are sparse and simple, just as light as the music itself. A heap of comparisons have been tagged upon Schiller over the years, especially in international markets like North America (where Schiller is likened to Enigma and Deep Forest, misleadingly), but von Deylen really is blazing his own trail here, albeit a rather unadventurous one. What began for him in the late '90s as streamlined trance accented by German spoken word poetry (hence the Schiller moniker) has at this point evolved toward highly accessible trance-pop that is more inclined toward soothing candle-lit home listening than sweaty danceclub fodder. As such, it may seem downright alien to most North Americans, who never really took to trance, let alone dance music in general, like Europeans did beginning in the '90s. And for this reason, the emphasis on English-language vocals seems odd. Because Schiller is primarily a German phenomenon, and to a lesser extent a European one, and is likely to remain so, why not stick with the native language? In any event, Leben isn't an easily categorizable album and will likely appeal to a very select audience that is partial to either home-listening trance or dancey new age -- or else those genuinely intrigued by where von Deylen is steering Schiller, that is, further toward by-the-numbers trance-pop. ~ Jason Birchmeier
