"The Brotherhood of the Bomb" (09/25/2001) Electronic Techno Animal, Matador (record label)Personnel: D?lek , El-P, Toastie Tailor, Antipop Consortium, Rubberoom, Vast Aire (vocals). Photographer: Rob Hann. Excepting 1998's Radio Hades collection and the same year's Versus Reality concept/experiment, it's been a grueling six-year wait for the proper follow-up to Techno Animal's grueling, Alien Queen-size Re-Entry. The Brotherhood of the Bomb doesn't quite possess the daunting lurch of it's predecessor -- and indeed it's far from a retread of past stomped-upon ground. But oh, how it pounds and pummels. The record features six ballast-blasting instrumentals and six tracks with vocals, with those vocal contributions arriving courtesy of some of underground hip-hop's elite. It might come as little surprise that Kevin Martin and Justin Broadrick continue to adhere to a maxim that states, "When in doubt, push the drums further up in the mix and add some more noise; when not in doubt, push the drums further up in the mix and add some more noise." The instrumentals would evoke a sub-zero climate to a listener located in a tropic region, conjuring visions of endlessly barren and pothole-ridden boulevards dotted by boarded-up buildings. (Monolake fans should be pleased to hear a tip of the hat to the German duo on "Monoscopic.") As far as the vocal tracks are concerned, they hardly add any warmth or temper the record's pungency. During the fruitful collaborations with Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox), El-P (Company Flow), Anti Pop Consortium, Toastie Taylor, D?lek, Sonic Sum, and Rubberoom, you can't help but think that the cracks on their lips must be widening with the delivery of each line. At the end, the only problem is the reality that Martin and Broadrick aren't able to make a record like this every year. ~ Andy Kellman

"Time Tourist *" (04/23/1996) Electronic B12 (Techno), Wax Trax! Records (USA)B12's Mike Golding and Steve Rutter may hail from England, but their hearts are in Detroit. Devotees of the warm, synth-propelled glide and future-rhythm drive particular to such Motor City pioneers as Juan Atkins and Derrick May, Golding and Rutter were actually once missionaries who carried the techno torch and its attendant gospel across the Atlantic. Together with such ardent English crusaders as The Black Dog, As One, and Stasis, B12 built the earliest bridges between suburban British bedrooms and the streets of Techno City, U.S.A. Following in the propensity that techno artists have for fostering multiple aliases, B12 is actually a collective label for several projects--Cmetric, Redcell, and Musicology. TIME TOURIST, Golding and Rutter's second formal B12 album, transcends these confusing name-game permutations and delivers a solid set of loftily melodic mindscapes, fantastic sci-fi sounds, and fancifully funky rhythms. "Cymetry," a busy, ingeniously orchestrated dance of lunar take-offs and landings, is music for spaceports. Tracks like "Epilion" and "Radiophonic Workshop" suggest dancehall universes where multiple mirror-ball suns cast spangled starlight upon the intertwined rotations of lambent planetary bodies.

"Radikal Techno, Vol. 6" (07/23/2002) Electronic Various Artists, RadikalPersonnel: Roberta Carter Harrison (vocals). Radikal is a name you can trust when it comes to dancefloor-friendly techno. The latest volume in their Radikal Techno series compiles 18 techno tracks that will have the crowd jumping. Some of the tracks included are "Blast the Speakers" by Warp Brothers; a new single by Voodoo & Serano, "This is Acid"; a remake of DJ Kool's hip-hop anthem "Let Me Clear My Throat" by Public Domain; and Jason Nevins and Keoki facing off over "Dirty Drums." Techno enthusiasts who don't mind mainstream sounds will find this disc to be perfect dancefloor fodder. ~ Tim Sendra

"Radikal Techno, Vol. 5" (03/20/2001) Electronic Various Artists, RadikalFor disc number five in this series, the Radikal folks scoop up all the U.S. and European hard trance that they can get their hands on. Pieced together once again by longtime producer/label head J?rgen S. Korduletsch, the focus here is looking for the anthemic club vibe that might have defined a clubbing season either here or abroad. Having successfully licensed Zombie Nation's "Kernkraft 400 for the previous compilation, it's logical that a sound-alike track such as R.B.A.'s "No Alternative," which features a Black Panther Party-styled sample, should appear here. But the distorted, tweaked-out sound of the Elektron SidStation synth that made "Kernkraft 400 an international hit in 2000 hasn't necessarily stood the test of time, and many of the other tracks here are equally limited in scope. Passable tunes include Blank & Jones "Sound of Machines" that comes across like the more club-oriented end of Italian hitmakers Eiffel 65. Soundlovers "Walking" is sort of a poor man's attempt at re-creating "Madonna's" recent period, while the classical affectations of "Spente Le Stelle by Opera Trance featuring Emma Shapplin is hard to take seriously. Reasonable tracks, however, such as Darude's "Sandstorm," can not really balance all the forgettable material included here. ~ JoE Silva
