"Jean Michel Jarre in Concert: Houston-Lyon" (10/19/1993) Electronic Jarre, Jean-Michel, Dreyfus Records (France)En Concert is an energetic live album with half the tracks played in front of Houston, TX, and the other half played to a crowd in Lyon, France. Jarre ignites the crowd in both cities, letting loose on a multitude of synthesizers and sequencers while playing his classics like "Oxygene V," "Magnetic Fields I," and "Equinoxe V." His sonic display in front of the French crowd is the more spirited of the two, since Europe is where his fan base is the largest. Jarre kept many of his slower mood pieces off of this album, which is rightly so. His quicker, more robust pieces seem to gain momentum as he dazzles the audience with his electronic sweeps and sharp stabs of brilliant synth. The lasers and lights can almost be heard piercing the night sky on "Rendez-Vous II" as Jarre ceases to limit himself to only a few instruments. Both performances are outside, so there are no walls restricting the music, which, believe it or not, can be felt throughout the album. The sounds that radiate from Jarre's keyboards sound large and expansive, capturing the live atmosphere and dynamically unleashing it onto disc. ~ Mike DeGagne

"Les Granges Brulees" (01/20/2004) Electronic Original Soundtrack, Dreyfus Records (France)Original score composed by Jean-Michel Jarre. The CD issue of Jean-Michel Jarre's soundtrack to the Jean Chapon film Les Granges Brul?es has been long overdue. An integral but less well-known part of the composer's catalog, it marks Jarre's first full immersion into film scoring and as such, it is an inquisitive, speculative works that illustrates concept more than it does nuance. In this case that's a plus. The themes here are rarely extended; they shift and jar the listener episodically, coursing form one "major" scene to the next without bothering much with serial elements. It's a compelling listen, but ultimately not terribly memorable. That said, it's a plus for fans who've been seeing expensive LP copies for decades now. ~ Thom Jurek

"Chronologie" (10/08/1993) Electronic Jarre, Jean-Michel, Dreyfus Records (France)Composer: Jean Michel Jarre. Personnel: Jean Michel Jarre (keyboards, synthesizer, ARP synthesizer); Patrick Rondat (guitar); Dominique Perrier, Michel Geiss, Francis Rimbert (keyboards). Audio Mixers: Michel Geiss; Jean Michel Jarre. Recording information: Croissy Studio, France. Illustrator: Michel Granger. Photographer: Charlotte Rampling. Unknown Contributor Roles: Michel Geiss; Michel Granger. For fans of Jean-Michel Jarre, Chronologie contains more of Jarre's proven ability to blend familiar sounds in the New Music tradition into unusual, inventive compositions. The uninitiated will find Chronologie's blend of 19th Century classical musical themes with pop, rave and rap sounds downright danceable. Many of the pieces begin with a classical sound -- in one song it's deeply resonating pipe organ -- and almost invariably pick up the tempo quickly and slide right into a Gloria Estefan beat... ~ MusD

"Oxygene 7-13" (07/27/2004) Electronic Jarre, Jean-Michel, Dreyfus Records (France)Personnel: Jean Michel Jarre (Mellotron, keyboards, synthesizer, programming, Theremin); Francis Rimbert (keyboards); Christian Sales (programming, sound effects). OxygŠne 7-13 continues where Jean-Michel Jarre left off 20 years before, that is, with the last track ("Part 6") of 1977's OxygŠne. Much had changed in the interim, for both Jarre and synthesizer technology. The result is a set of up-tempo, highly melodic electronic trance reminiscent of Steve Hillage's work of the time, as well as German trance producers like Sven V?th. Though it will sound best to those already familiar with his music, Jarre's influence was considerable, and he continued to prove it into the late '90s. ~ John Bush

"Images: The Best of Jean Michel Jarre" (08/18/1998) Electronic Jarre, Jean-Michel, Dreyfus Records (France)This 1998 reissue includes 3 bonus tracks not on the original release. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. French synth wizard Jean-Michel Jarre was a crucial force in the development of the new age instrumental genre. By taking what had been, for the most part, underground avant-garde electronic experiments and making them more symphonic, melodic, and accessible, Jarre became an international success, and his best work, collected on IMAGES, demonstrates a keen compositional approach. Stretching back to his first album, 1977's OXYGENE, and continuing through the '80s and '90s, IMAGES gives a full picture of Jarre's evolution and his increasingly savvy use of technology to create unique, atmospheric music. Boasting 17 tracks and remarkably crisp digital remastering, IMAGES is an excellent sampler of Jarre's distinctive aesthetic.

"Odyssey Through O2" (03/23/2004) Electronic Jarre, Jean-Michel, Dreyfus Records (France)This is a continuous in-the-mix CD. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Loop Guru (loops); DJ Cam (scratches). Audio Mixers: Claude Monnet; Cutee B.; DJ Cam; Eddie DeLena; Will O'Donovan. Audio Remixers: DJ Cam; Hani; Loop Guru; Resistance D; Sunday Club; Takkyu Ishino. Liner Note Authors: Claude Monnet; DJ Cam; Hani; Loop Guru; Apollo 440; Sunday Club; Takkyu Ishino. Recording information: Apollo Control, Camden, London, England. Although billed as a Jean Michel Jarre recording, Odyssey Through 02 is actually a remix project by various artists, each taking a cut or two from his groundbreaking Odyssey album. Perhaps the reason Jarre's name is on it as one of his own is because he had final say over the end result. Here, countryman DJ Cam, Loop Guru, Apollo 440, Hani, Resistance D, the Sunday Club, and Boodjie & Veronica take elements from the classic "Oxygene," and re-create it in three "phases" completely out of sync with the source material and out of context. In other words, track ten is first and done three different times by different artists and "Oxygene 8" is done four times! DJ Cam remixes "Oxygene 7" and it is the only time it appears here; he remains somewhat faithful to the source, though he warps its time/space continuum a bit. In addition, there are a pair of bonus tracks in remixes of "Oxygene 13," and "Rendez-vous." The rest of the material from the album is ignored here. Musically, it's like any remix outing, some of it smokes -- Hani's version of "8" is another standout in phase one, and Resistance D's redo of "10" in phase two is pretty spaced out and lovely -- and some of them miss the mark entirely (they shall remain nameless). Ultimately this is a bit of a drag, there are too many tried and true house beats pumped into the abyss with Jarre's material being a backdrop for updated beats that don't sound all that new. A brand-new album by Jarre himself, in or out of touch, would have been preferable -- like why didn't he just remix and recontextualize it himself? Perhaps to make the purchase more palatable, Jarre collaborated with the Belgian company ArKaos to offer a multimedia desktop for punters who get ahold of this where the user can create "paintings" to accompany the various selections. Yawn. ~ Thom Jurek

"The Essential" (01/25/2005) Jazz Instrument Jarre, Jean-Michel, Dreyfus Records (France)Personnel: Jean Michel Jarre (keyboards); Natacha Atlas (vocals); Laurie Anderson (spoken vocals); Adrian Belew (guitar); Marcus Miller (bass instrument). French electronic music pioneer Jean Michel Jarre is an artist who requires a reintroduction every generation. Despite his massive success in the '70s and '80s, including his world-record-attendance-setting 1978 concerts at the Place de la Concorde in Paris, Jarre's impressive and influential catalog lacks the ubiquitous status of similar innovators Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder. Granted, most of Jarre's most infamous work lacks the machine dance pulse that has kept his peers in a brighter spotlight. Instead, Jarre's most popular recordings can be heard echoed in the incredibly popular, yet criminally underhyped world of new age music, where his glistening synth sounds and classical ear for composition had a broader impact. But that doesn't mean the Jarre's music isn't "cool." His seminal "Oxygene Part 4" indicates the loping stride of the extremely hip Kompakt sound, while 1984's "Zoolookology" is classic electro with its own quirky twist, not a far cry from the quirky electro throwbacks being heavily peddled today. At his worst, like on 2000's "C'est la Vie," Jarre mimics the sound of insipid electronic trance music. But at his best, such as the geniusly gated bass on 1986's "Diva," he paved the way for virtually every mode of electronic music well before there were genre classifications to place each little nuance in. And it's essential that yet another wave of digitally keen music lovers rediscover his extraordinary canon. ~ Joshua Glazer
