"Thinking of You" (11/02/1999) Electronic Kitaro, DomoPersonnel: Kitaro (various instruments); Masa Ito (classical guitar); Tito La Rosa (pututo, quena, sampana); Gary Barlough (programming). THINKING OF YOU won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. Personnel: Masa Ito (guitar, baritone guitar); Gary Barlough (programming). Audio Mixer: Peter R. Kelsey. Recording information: Mochi House. Photographer: Kitaro. Unknown Contributor Role: Tito la Rosa. Arranger: Kitaro. Thinking of You is one of the most beautiful CDs of all time, certainly in the new age community. It is by Kitaro, whose name means -- fittingly -- "a man of love." These dramatic atmospheres are not subtle. They are overflowing with bravado, romance, serenity, and peace. The most important element that Kitaro injects is love -- for his craft, his listeners, and himself. The powerful emotions surround deep listeners on this journey to ecstasy. This wonderful CD will appeal to fans of Suzanne Ciani, Constance Demby, Vangelis, and Dean Evenson. ~ Jim Brenholts

"Best of Kitaro, Vol. 2 [2 CD]" (02/09/1999) Rock & Pop Kitaro, Domo RecordsThe first 25,000 units of BEST OF KITARO VOLUME 2 will be available in a limited-edition that includes the bonus disc THE SOONG SISTERS. Choosing a best-of collection for Kitaro must be a difficult task. Everything he touches turns to gold. Best of Kitaro, Vol. 2 is a collection of pieces from his releases of 1988 through 1998. The selected compositions are typical of this man's techniques and styles. While there is only one unfortunate track with vocals (by the ever irritating Jon Anderson), all of the performances are lyrical. Kitaro's gentle touch and smooth sound design give the pieces special flair. Each piece has its own panache, charm, and grace. This is an excellent starting point for any Kitaro collection. As an added bonus, it includes The Soong Sisters, a soundtrack to the film of the same name. ~ Jim Brenholts

"Tenku" (06/17/1997) Electronic Kitaro, Domo RecordsSolo performer: Kitaro (sythesizer, guitar, piano, drums, percussion). Includes liner notes by Kitaro. Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab). Kitaro is an amazingly talented individual. He has been one of the world's premier electronic composers and performers for decades. During that time, he has created some of the most memorable music in the new age community. His output has been both prolific and consistent. It is difficult to review his albums because they only compare to each other. Tenku is a brilliantly lyrical yet entirely instrumental CD. Kitaro speaks volumes with his synthesizers. These romantic interludes are full of gentle melodies and lush synth washes. The atmospheres are vibrant and bold. They are connected by wispy drones. There are no dark overtones or edges; this is upbeat, pastoral ambience. There are few similar artists, but fans of Vangelis, Suzanne Ciani, Constance Demby, and Dean Evenson are likely to enjoy Kitaro's music as well. ~ Jim Brenholts

"Oasis [Japan CD]" (09/23/2002) Electronic Kitaro, Pony Canyon Records (Japan)Solo performer: Kitaro (acoustic guitar, synthesizer, percussion, programming). Originally released on Pony Canyon Records in 1979. Digitally remastered by Doug Sax and Gavin Lursseen. Kitaro is one of the leading sound designers in the new age community. He is also one of the leading composers and performers. Oasis is one of his older albums (originally released on Pony Canyon Records in 1979), and it is a gem. This is truly a rest stop in the middle of a storm. The atmospheres are light, airy, and lyrical without vocals. The sound design incorporates symphonic synths and gentle melodies. The soundscapes are dynamic and bold. This is a great CD from a great man. It will appeal to fans of Anugama, Vangelis, Suzanne Ciani, and Constance Demby. ~ Jim Brenholts Kitaro is one of the leading sound designers in the new age community. "Silk Road V.2" (09/23/2002) New Age Kitaro, Pony Canyon Records (Japan)SILK ROAD VOLUME 2 is also available in a 2 CD set with Volume 1. This is taken from Kitaro's score for the television documentary "Silk Road." Solo performer: Kitaro (arranger, chant vocals, acoustic guitar, santur, quena, Mellotron, Korg, Roland, Yamaha, Moog & Prophet synthesizers, drums, bells, percussion, synthesizer programming). Digitally remastered by Doug Sacks and Gavin Lurssen (The Mastering Lab). It can be easy to dismiss a Kitaro album as more "new age fluff." Indeed, many reviewers have done so, thereby depriving their readers of an honest appraisal and an opportunity to experience the sheer joy of this music. Silk Road, Vol. 2 is the second collection from Kitaro's soundtracks for the Japanese television series of the same name. These light, symphonic synthesizer pieces are elegant and glamorous. Kitaro approaches his craft tenderly and lovingly and it shows in his gentle touch. The ebb and flow of these pieces is warm and friendly. Kitaro is in the elite class of new age artists. Fans of Constance Demby, Suzanne Ciani, Dean Evenson, Lisa Lynne, Steven Halpern, and Tingstad & Rumbel will enjoy this CD. ~ Jim Brenholts

"Silk Road V.1" (09/23/2002) New Age Kitaro, Pony Canyon Records (Japan)SILK ROAD VOLUME 1 is taken from Kitaro's score for the television documentary "Silk Road." SILK ROAD VOLUMES 1 and 2 are also available as a 2 CD set (see seperate listing). Solo performer: Kitaro (acoustic guitar, Mellotron, synthesizer, bell, percussion, quena, santur, programming). Digitally remastered by Doug Sacks and Gavin Lurssen (The Mastering Lab). Kitaro has released numerous recordings of merit within his vast oeuvre, but few are of as high a quality as SILK ROAD. Recorded in 1980 (before his signing to Geffen started the avalanche), there are many moments of timeless beauty throughout, interlaced with some gentle guitar picking and shifting Eastern flute tones. The beautiful tranquillity that is SILK ROAD makes for an often becalming aural narcotic, the occasional ingestion of which might just soothe the soul.

"Ancient Journey [Japan CD]" (01/24/2001) New Age Kitaro, BMG (distributor)Personnel: Kitaro (various instruments); Kristin Stordahl Kanda (flute, alto flute). Recorded at Mochi House, USA and Japan. AN ANCIENT JOURNEY was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best New Age Album. Although this set is entitled AN ANCIENT JOURNEY, in the hands of Kitaro history is only half the story. The musician creates an atmospheric sense of space, and refuses to clutter it up, leaving one to feel that he's speaking as much about the future as the past. At the very least, he suggests that the spiritual truths unlocked by ancient civilizations have yet to be fully realized. Of course, this drama is also achieved by conventional Kitaro methods--the electronic droplets of "Whisper," or the orchestral sweep of "Maya Magic," for instance--but less so than in other productions. For the most part, this is an understated, imagistic album, one that roams freely through time and space. Kitaro's double-disc An Ancient Journey is collection of gentle, ethereal compositions utilizing his unique style of performance. Blending traditional Japanese instruments with lush keyboards, Kitaro crafted some very relaxing and meditative music on this album. Like any album in this genre, this is for very specific tastes only, but this is definitely one of the superior artists working in new age music. With gorgeous melodies and a penchant for keeping things low-key, Kitaro's An Ancient Journey is a proper follow-up to 2001's Ancient that should keep fans happy and possibly gain him new followers within the genre. ~ Bradley Torreano
