"Moondawn" (01/31/2006) Electronic Schulze, Klaus, Inside Out MusicPersonnel: Klaus Schulze (organ, keyboards, synthesizer); Haraold Grobkopf (drums). Recorded at Studio P-anne-Paulsen, Frankfurt, Germany. As one of the original members of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze certainly blazed some important trails on the virgin terrain of early-1970s electronic music--trails that would grow wide enough to accommodate millions of travelers throughout the '80s, '90s, 2000s, and beyond, and encompass everything from New Age and ambient music to drone and chill-out techno. The same commitment to innovation marks Schulze's solo discography, from which 1976's MOONDAWN emerges as one of the highlights. Comprising two long compositions ("Floating" and "Mindphaser"), MOONDAWN is vintage, ambient space music generated by various analog synthesizers (foremost of which is the Moog, the key instrument Schulze used to sculpt his signature sound). Not only is MOONDAWN an important document in the early chapters of electronica, but it stands up remarkably well beside the countless albums it helped inspire.

"Mirage: An Electronic Winter Landscape [Digipak]" (02/01/2005) Electronic Schulze, Klaus, Inside Out MusicSolo performer: Klaus Schulze (keyboards). Recorded at Studio Panne Paulsen, Frankfurt, Germany in January 1977. Personnel: Klaus Schulze (keyboards, synthesizer). This classic album by Klaus Schulze opens with "Velvet Voyage," a minimal, echoing electronic composition that sounds like a lonely satellite drifting as it passes alone though the hollow quiet of the universe. These swirling electronics--frequently described as space music--suggest the infinite movement of weightlessness. When distant organ chords (and distorted vocal whispering) turn into heavenly melodies, it is obvious we have arrived at "Crystal Lake," which is not space at all, but an alternate reality crammed with brilliant, shimmering fields of energy. Pleasantly chaotic sonic elements are slowly introduced until they reach the frenzied crescendo of a synthesizer orchestra. Schulze has said he's interested in creating music for alternative worlds, and this marvelous album makes good on those intentions.

"X [Digipak]" (02/22/2005) Electronic Schulze, Klaus, Inside Out MusicPersonnel include: Klaus Schulze (Mellotron, synthesizer, ARP synthesizer, mini-Moog synthesizer, Moog synthesizer, cymbals, tom tom); Harald Grosskopf (drums). One of the definitive albums of the electronic music pioneer's career. Each track on X or "Ten" (since it's Schulze's 10th release ) is titled after a famous German personality, but it's the provocative electronic music behind the names that makes this one of his best albums. On this two-CD set, Schulze's sequencer is joined by electric guitar and drums, that pleasingly bring an earthy, simple feel to his pastiches. Still captivating and alluring with his multi-keyboard entourage, the tracks each exhibit a personality all their own. "Friedrich Nietzsche" is the most vibrant of all six, harboring a complex but attractive aura. A true pioneer at his craft, Schulze's X is one of the more definitive albums of his career.

"Irrlicht" (05/09/2006) Electronic Schulze, Klaus, Inside Out MusicPersonnel includes: Klaus Schulze (keyboards). A founding member of such notable Krautrock ensembles as Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, and Cosmic Jokers, Klaus Schulze is genuinely deserving of the oft-assigned "father of modern electronic music" title. The drummer-turned-master-of-a-million-synthesizers did not remain with any single unit for very long. Instead, Schulze embarked on a bewilderingly prolific solo career that seeded the fertile paths of new age, ambient, trance, and techno music. 1972's IRRLICHT is where it all begins. Over three lengthy tracks, saturnine string motifs are pitted against surging drone and sheeting downpours of synthetic organ. It's a dense, often blisteringly dissonant clash of orchestral crescendos and synthesizer swells with little in the way of conventional melody, but texture and tonal complexity to burn. "Satz Ebene" sounds like one of Bach's magisterial pipe-organ works performed on a distant planet's barren surface. "Satz Gewitter" is a harrowing coda fortified with sci-fi sonics. The contemplative "Satz Exil Sils Maria" encroaches like a lunar dusk as Schulze slowly draws a curtain of cosmic shadow over the event horizon.

"Beyond Recall" (10/18/1991) Electronic Schulze, Klaus, VentureAll songs composed, arranged and performed by Klaus Schulze. BEYOND RECALL is Schulze's follow-up to the slightly spotty MIDITERRENEAN PADS. It is thematically similar to its predecessor insomuch as Schulze continues to get broad mileage out of myriad bell-like sounds, percolating, metronomic sequencers, and all manners of mysterious electronics. But BEYOND RECALL dazzles the ear much more brightly. "Airlift," a cheeky refrain of Schulze's early classic IRRLICHT, is spruced up for the roaring '90s with great billows of pleasant noise arrested by budding rhythms and invasive beats. This is actually the centerpiece of a record already boasting several tracks that cross the 15-minute mark. Schulze is nothing if not epic-minded. In fact, he is one of the last of the classic Teutonic synthesists who allows his ideas the room to grow, breathe, and breed--possibly the reason why he has found such a kindred spirit in his contemporary, Peter Namlook. The truth be told, Schulze continues to be criminally ignored amongst the electronic congnoscenti, and despite something of a sea-change in that attitude, remains an "underground" figure to most Westerners. Any music lover fortunate enough to pick up recordings such as BEYOND RECALL might prick up his ears a bit more in response to Schulze's vast catalog.

"The Dresden Performance" (06/28/1991) Electronic Schulze, Klaus, VentureTHE DRESDEN PERFORMANCE is, oddly, not an entirely live recording. The music was designed specifically for a one-off concert in Dresden, prior to the dissolution of the Berlin Wall. But the mammoth performance had to be cut due to imposed time restrictions by the local police (how drastically the climate has changed since!). Because of this, the tracks not performed live were later synchronized in the studio and added to form a conceptually unified work. Early-'90s Schulze is still a complex beast, a scintillating network of sequenced percussion and elaborate, carefully positioned samples. Schulze's discovery of the wonderful joys of the sampler has resulted in some of his most obstreperous music, and the concoctions displayed before a preening crowd on DRESDEN make full use of contemporary technology. The 'scapes here are naggingly difficult to pin down. Suffice it to say that any participants will find themselves immersed in a sonic whirlpool of collage, voices, spiraling percussive sequences, and a host of genuinely strange sounds the likes of which have yet to be identified by the human ear.
