"Tour de France Soundtracks" (08/19/2003) R&B Kraftwerk, Astralwerks (Record Label)It is a testament to Kraftwerk's brilliance that some 30 years after pioneering the electronica revolution they were able to keep pace with the legions of acts they inspired. 2003's TOUR DE FRANCE SOUNDTRACK is as crisp, modern, and appealing as any minimal techno turned out in the 2000s, and is all the more impressive for its direct link to the band's legacy from the 1970s. Like the music on their landmark releases AUTOBAHN and TRANS-EUROPE EXPRESS, the meticulously calibrated synth-scapes of TOUR DE FRANCE SOUNDTRACKS conjure visions of machines churning in mechanized perfection and sensations of robotic ecstasy. The cerebral yet infectious beats that characterize the three versions of the single and tracks like "Chrono" and "Titanium" are ambitious and compelling, full of clicking polyrhythms and edgy, icy funk. As usual, these are layered with electronic micro-melodies and Vocoder-filtered vocals. The theme of France's famous bike race plays heavily in the album, from the song titles to the heatbeat and heavy breathing in "Electro Kardiogramm." Kraftwerk began this project in 1983, when they released the "Tour de France" single; though it took the band 20 years to complete the album, the results are fresh as anything Kraftwerk ever released.

French duo Air's soundtrack for the Sofia Coppola-directed (yes, THAT Coppola) film THE VIRGIN SUICIDES is a far cry from the bouncy post-disco sounds of their earlier efforts. Instead of light, cheery, and fun music full of ironic wit, this album delves into darker regions. Dance beats are clearly not the agenda here, as the largely instrumental album paints moody sonic portraits that bring to mind the highly textured '70s work of art-rockers like Eno and Pink Floyd. In fact, much of THE VIRGIN SUICIDES sounds more like a batch of vintage prog-rock outtakes than like the work of Europe's most cutting-edge electronic popsters. Breaking the vocal silence (but not the dark mood) are "Playground Love," sung by Gordon Tracks, and the album's closer, an extended, unsettling monologue delivered by a deep, nightmare-inducing voice.

While only serious film buffs are likely to recall Hugh Hudson's role as the director of the Oscar-winning CHARIOTS OF FIRE, the Greek composer Vangelis became, and remained, a household name with his soundtrack for the 1981 film. At the time, the theme song was parodied as being excessively saccharin. Indeed, with titles such as "Five Rings" and "100 Metres," the album wears its Olympian heart on its sleeve. Nonetheless, CHARIOTS OF FIRE is often a brooding work, and if the prevailing memory of this album is one of slow-motion runners and heady triumph, Vangelis's synthesizer work often conveys a sense of isolation and lost glory.

Abandoning pop music for a moment, King and Simpson turn their talents to the soundtrack of FIGHT CLUB. For this film about consumerism and catharsis in the modern world, the Dust Brothers created a moody synth-based tapestry full of foreboding. The overt pop techniques of their previous work are eschewed in favor of something more atmospheric. The turntable scratches of "Who is Tyler Durden," the dark trip-hop feel of "What is Fight Club?," and the breakbeats on "Single Serving Jack" provide ample sonic fingerprints, but FIGHT CLUB finds the Dust Brothers venturing into new territory as well.

CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. An invitation to score Al Reinert's film of the Apollo Mission's lunar landing provided Eno with the "opportunity to explore the feelings of space travel." APOLLO is "one small step?" for Eno, here working both within and beyond the conceptual confines of his Ambient series. The disc's dozen gorgeous, evocative miniatures see Eno's first collaborative work with producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois--a collaborator who would prove central to many of Eno's subsequent projects--and with his own brother, pianist Roger Eno. APOLLO contains some of Eno's most carefully crafted melodies, wrought impressionistically in limpid, quicksilver synth and gilded with Lanois's liquid guitar lines. "Matta" and "Under Stars II" imagine the wonders of weightlessness and zero-gravity drift. Lanois's "Silver Morning" views the dawn's smoldering glow from above, while the golden rays of "Deep Blue Day" strain to break at the planet's horizon. "An Ending (Ascent)" watches tearfully from the heavens as a tiny blue Earth falls away into the cradling arms of space; "Always Returning" welcomes the sight of terra firma's green expanses; and the twinkling "Stars" casts its eyes heavenward with a new sense of respect and homesick longing. An ambient masterpiece.
