"A Windham Hill Christmas" (09/01/2003) Electronic Various Artists, Windham Hill RecordsIncludes liner notes by Dawn Atkinson. While they may not be everyone's cup of herbal tea, the pioneering New Age label Windham Hill could never be accused of being anything less than tasteful. Accordingly, A WINDHAM HILL CHRISTMAS is far from the crass, mass-market commerciality of so many hastily assembled pop-crossover holiday collections. For this outing, Windham Hill gathered together some of their finest artists to create an all-instrumental album featuring re-interpretations of traditional Christmas Carols. So if you think you've heard say, "Deck the Halls" before, just wait until you catch what the sophisticated pianistic skills of Liz Story add to it. The same goes for piano guru George Winston's take on "Christmas is Coming," and on and on. And hey, Thirtysomething lovers, W.G. "Snuffy" Walden, the acoustic guitar whiz who provided that show's theme music turns up here too, delivering his version of the tried and true "The First Noel."

"Discovery" (03/13/2001) Electronic Daft Punk, Virgin Records (USA)Daft Punk: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem Christo. Additional personnel includes: Todd Edwards, Romananthony. "Short Circuit" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. "One More Time" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Daft Punk (vocals); Romanthony, Todd Edwards (vocals). Illustrator: Daft Punk. Photographers: Mitchell Feinberg; Luis Sanchis. In 1997, this French electro-dance duo made a huge intercontinental splash with its debut album, HOMEWORK, mixing disco, house, funk, techno, and more. While Daft Punk's second recording still focuses on the maximum accessibility that earned its debut such high marks, there's less of an obvious focus on pop hooks. Irony and house beats are the order of the day, and an eclectic thread runs throughout DISCOVERY. "Digital Love" sounds like the theme to a '70s sitcom as realized by the Buggles. "Nightvision" is a mellow, wordless, Quiet Storm-meets-Eno soundscape, while in an interpolation sure to gain plenty of attention, "Superheroes" marries a Barry Manilow sample to an unrelenting house beat. Ultimately, DISCOVERY is less of a mission statement than its predecessor, but no less danceable or listenable.

"Summerbreeze" (01/01/2006) Electronic Tiesto, Nettwerk AmericaThis is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Tiesto. Personnel: DJ Ti?sto (turntables); Jan Johnston (background vocals). Audio Mixer: DJ Ti?sto. Audio Remixers: Oliver Lieb; DJ Ti?sto. As they say, you are a target market. Released to help coincide with a timely North American tour, Summerbreeze coddles an erratic DJ Tiesto -- a bit too eager to please his new audience -- with big tunes and creative hypertension. Okay, probably unfair considering the quick hurdles Tiesto has jumped in trance circles. After all, it's easy to be seduced by his knack for driving home highbrow warmth or to be impressed with the manner in which he can put a clever spit'n'shine on what's usually considered mawkish elation. Rather, the dilemma stems from dishing out those songs that got universal drool (BT's "Dreaming," Delerium's "Silence") for no other reason except that they weren't absolute excrement. Redemption rarely comes out to play with Tiesto. The closing landslide of swelling, staccato beats that is "Wonder" is about as close as he gets to a game of handball with his muse, but it feels like one of pity. Don't let anybody ever lie to you that strength can't be found in being a little more off-target. ~ Dean Carlson Released to help coincide with a timely North American tour, Summerbreeze coddles an erratic DJ Tiesto with big tunes and creative hypertension. Editor: Philip Aaberg. Photographers: David Ross; Rob Atkins; Irene Young; Richard Schultz; Patrick Hinely; Ray Katchatorian; David Rose; Carl Story & the Rambling Mountaineers. Arrangers: David Cullen; George Winston; Will Ackerman; Richard Sch?nerz; Jim Brickman; Liz Story; Paul McCandless; Philip Aaberg; Steve Erquiaga; Alex de Grassi; Barbara Higbie; Tracy Silverman; Tim Story; Brian Dunning. Following in the footsteps of the previous collection, A Windham Hill Christmas, Vol. 2 gathers more relaxing, sophisticated holiday music as performed by Windham Hill's roster of artists. The collection finds the right balance between traditional and contemporary, both in terms of its sound and its choice of songs. Will Ackerman and David Cullen's "I Wonder as I Wander" sounds gently modern, while Paul McCandless' "In Dulci Jubilo" has a slightly more traditional bent. Tracy Silverman and Thea Suits' strings and flute interpretation of "Away in a Manger" mixes both approaches and is breathtaking in its lovely simplicity. Most of the performances here, including Barbara Higbie's "Patapan," suggest pristine snowscapes or, in the case of Jim Brickman's "The First Noel," the warmth of a hearth, but Steve Erquiaga's "Joy to the World" may be the first rendition of the carol that sounds downright sunny. Tracks by Richard Sch?nherz, Alex de Grassi, and Tim Story and George Winston's "Silver Bells" complete the album, which like A Windham Hill Christmas, makes a lovely, subtle soundtrack to the holidays. ~ Heather Phares

"La Revancha del Tango" (04/08/2003) Electronic Gotan Project, XL Recordings/Beggars GroupThis is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Gotan Project: Cristina Vilallonga (vocals); Eduardo Makaroff (acoustic guitar); Nini Flores (bandoneon); Iine Kruse (violin); Gustavo Beytelmann (piano); Christph H. Muller (keyboards, bass, programming); Philippe Cohen Solal (keyboards, bass); Fabrizio Fenoglietto (bass); Edi Tomassi (percussion); Willy Crook. Producers include: Philippe Cohen Solal, Christoph H. Muller, Eduardo Makaroff, Peter Kruder, Tom Middleton. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. An unrivaled collection of themes representing a unique fusion amid traditional forms of music and the nouvelle fields of electronica, Gotan Project's La Revancha del Tango discloses unknown frontiers for the modern beat explorers. Inspired by Argentinean tango, Philippe Cohen Solal and Christophe H. M?ller, responsible for projects such as Boys From Brazil or Stereo Action Unlimited, united their efforts with Eduardo Makaroff to record what ultimately became a daring musical piece. Mixing styles like dub and downbeat and enrolling the talents of Argentinean musicians like Gustavo Beytelmann and Nini Flores, the founding trio of Gotan Project managed to deliver a unique debut album. "Tr¡ptico," "Santa Maria (Del Buen Aire)," and "El Capitalismo Foraneo" are just of the three themes revealing the trio's composing intuition, manipulating the romanticism and dark inspiration of Argentinean illustrative street music with novel electronica. Operating with instruments like the bandoneon, along with modern percussion, Gotan implements an exclusive creative challenge. "Vuelvo Ar Sur," an Astor Piazzolla original composition vocalized by Cristina Villalonga, closes this unequaled set of melodies, confirming Gotan's sole extent of melody exploration. ~ Mario Mesquita Borges

"Homework" (03/25/1997) Electronic Daft Punk, Virgin Records (USA)Daft Punk: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo. Producers: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo. Recorded at Daft House, Paris, France. "Da Funk" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. "Around The World" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the two French twenty-something DJs who make up Daft Punk, are relentless dance-music aficionados and historians. And unlike many of their contemporaries, their interests don't just lie in the electronic beats that have been rockin' the clubs since the mid-80s. The two knob-twiddlers are just as well-versed in Giorgio Moroder's Eurodisco grooves, Chic, and the old-school rhythms of Afrika Bambaata and the Sugarhill Records catalog, as they are in the Chicago house and Detroit techno traditions. When they're not assembling catchy-as-hell bits of electro-pop ("Around The World"), throwing down slabs of minimalist funk ("Da Funk"), or marrying Miami bass to Kraftwerkian blips ("Oh Yeah"), Homem-Christo and Bangalter try to impart a little knowledge. On "Teachers," they use a Ween-esque distorted vocal line to name-check a broad list of influences that includes Brian Wilson, Dr. Dre, and Armand Van Helden. Their broad focus, utopian determination and, of course, their way with a beat earn Daft Punk's HOMEWORK a well-deserved "A".

"Night Ripper" (05/09/2006) R&B Girl Talk (Electronica), Illegal ArtThe high-minded conceptual tropes of the original plunderphonic artists, John Oswald and Negativland, were not exactly anyone's idea of party music--pointed and often humorous cultural critique, but generally not something one could dance to. The post-Napster Internet-era of accelerated consumption has ushered in a new generation of pop-culture recyclers. These young laptop jockeys are as hell-bent on filling dance floors as they are on smashing commonplace genre banalities. Gregg Gillis (Girl Talk) is the sampledelic wunderkind behind NIGHT RIPPER, a rollicking 40-minute ride through hundreds of musical fragments, from (seemingly) as many different music styles. NIGHT RIPPER could easily have come across as a novelty record, but Gillis is no ordinary bedroom DJ-cum-producer. Abolishing the classic mash-up formula of vocal a capella over instrumental tracks, Gillis freely mixes snippets from a dizzying array of '80s pop, classic rock, grunge, Dirty South rap, and even Bollywood banghra beats. On the track "Bounce That," Gillis lays down a Ludacris rap over Elastica's "Connection" (itself an appropriation of Wire's "Three Girl Rhumba") in one of the album's stranger moments. Seamlessly mixed--as if by a highly skilled, attention-deficit-addled DJ--NIGHT RIPPER is a joyous, schizophrenic, and highly entertaining mess.

"Bedrock" (11/09/1999) Electronic Digweed, John, Ultra RecordsThis is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by John Digweed. BEDROCK follows from the success of Digweed's very successful night of the same name at London's Heaven. The compilation is something of a departure for Digweed, and its dark, funky blend of deep house and trance shows the DJ distancing himself from the more commercial and formulaic trance popularized by acts such as ATB and DJ Jean, who scored huge chart success in 1999. Here, Digweed creates a much grittier, underground sound that will surprise fans of his earlier RENAISSANCE and NORTHERN EXPOSURE mixes. The tone is set perfectly by the first track, Raff 'n' Freddy's "Listen," whose haunting vocal and emotive wash of strings sneaks up on you before you are drawn into an increasingly mesmerizing swirl of darkly pulsating basslines. Occasional spoken and whispered sinister vocals and even hints of disco emphasize Digweed's new manifesto for future funk. The second CD returns to somewhat more familiar trance territory with Sandra Collins' "Flutterby" and Slacker's "Flying." The album ends with the sublime "Heaven Scent" (another reference to the club night), produced by Digweed and his recording partner Nick Muir--the track's soaring synthesizer arpeggios close the album in inspiring style.

Like others in the series of "Windham Hill Collections" (see THANKSGIVING, RELAXATION, or AMERICA), PRAYER brings together artists associated with the label or with the New Age genre in general to perform musical selections based on a theme. Like the others discs in this series, the performances on PRAYER are of a high quality, and provide an appropriate soundtrack to quiet meditation or a restful drive through the countryside. The source material here is religious, and includes Bach's "Ave Maria" (performed by guitarist Steve Erquiaga), Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus"(performed by pianist Philip Aaberg), and Faure's "Sanctus from Requiem" (performed by Tim Story on piano and synthesizer). There are also traditional hymns ("Holy, Holy, Holy;" the Irish traditional "Be Thou My Vision"), and originals from flautist Thea Suits and violinist Tracy Silverman. Traditionally reverent, yet laced with contemporary flourishes, PRAYER is a fresh take on spiritual music that is appropriate for sacred and secular contexts.

"The Greatest Hits: Why Try Harder" (06/20/2006) Electronic Slim, Fatboy, Astralwerks (Record Label)Personnel: Sharon Woolf (vocals). Audio Mixer: Simon Thornton. Audio Remixers: Fatboy Slim; Norman Cook. WHY TRY HARDER? marks a decade in the illustrious career of Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim. As one of the prime movers of the big-beat genre, Cook has arguably done more to popularize global dance music culture than any other artist. This collection highlights songs that have become not only club anthems but staples on mainstream radio, MTV, and throughout pop culture in general. Fatboy Slim's formula for chart-topping success is then all the more surprising since his tracks are not usually "songs" in the traditional sense--rather, they consist mostly of breakbeats and vocal samples from classic soul and R&B. Tracks like "Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You" are trademark Fatboy Slim--showcasing Cook's uncanny ability to weave samples as disparate as surf guitar and gospel vocals into a propulsive dance mix. If the entire collection featured such DJ-friendly material, it would make for a fine party album. But the song "Sunset (Bird Of Prey)" displays Cook's more contemplative side. Mixing a spectral Jim Morrison a cappella sample over ambient synth washes, the track is the emotive apogee of a triumphant career retrospective.
