The Richest Man In Babylon *
Description:
"The Richest Man in Babylon" (10/01/2002) Electronic Thievery Corporation, Eighteenth StreetThievery Corporation: Rob Garza, Eric Hilton. Additional personnel: Emiliana Torrini, Sleepy Wonder & Shinehead, Lou Lou, Pam Bricker, Notch. Additional personnel include: Pam Bricker, Patrick De Santos (vocals); Steven Albert (guitar, electric bass); Ustad Amir (sitar); Frankie Addison, Kelvin Sampson, Harold Little (horns); Roberto Berimbao (electric bass); Sonny Caberwal (tabla). Eric Hilton and Rob Garza, the Washington, D.C. duo better known as Thievery Corporation, continue to refine their previously established style on THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON. For their third proper album of new material, they continue to mine a mellow electronica groove with jazz, pop, and world music flavorings mixed in among the expected reggae, soul, and funk elements. The title tune and "The State of the Union" focus heavily on the reggae aspects of Thievery Corporation's sound, while "Liberation Front" bears more of an acid-jazz feel. The closing track "Resolution" (along with a few others) is more in line with that ethereal trip-hop flow for which Hilton and Garza are perhaps best known. On the graphics side, a great deal of time appears to have been put in to the package here, which includes a thick and evocative photo booklet whose striking, occasionally off-kilter images provide an excellent visual equivalent to the music.

Sounds From the Thievery Hi-Fi by Thievery Corporation (CD - 01/24/2006)
"Sounds From the Thievery Hi-Fi" (01/24/2006) Electronic Thievery Corporation, 18th Street Lounge MusicThievery Corporation includes: Rob Garza, Eric Hilton. Additional personnel: Hutchy. Recording information: 1996 - 1999. Thievery Corporation (producers Eric Hilton and Rob Garza) introduced its sleek, sophisticated brand of down-tempo electronica on 1997's SOUNDS FROM THE THIEVERY HI-FI. Although later offerings by the duo (THE MIRROR CONSPIRACY and THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON) would display greater conceptual and sonic diversity, THIEVERY HI-FI lays the blueprint for everything that would follow. Mixing dub, trip-hop, ambient, and various Latin elements, Thievery Corporation makes deeply textured, genre-crossing chill-out music. (Hilton and Garza show a particular penchant for bossa nova--the album is dedicated to the memory of Antonio Carlos Jobim.) "2001 Spliff Odyssey" works a pulsing programmed beat that plays host to a battery of voice samples and synthesizer effects, and "Universal Highness" employs a call-and-response vocal tag and staccato trumpet notes over an increasingly layered percussion track. The duo's Latin influence can be heard on "Scene at the Open Air Market," and on the intro to "The Glass Bead Game," while the atmospheric sway of "Manha" conjures up the feel of an Astrud Gilberto tune. The tracks flow together remarkably well, making SOUNDS FROM THE THIEVERY HI-FI a sultry soundtrack for anything from swanky social gatherings to solo headphone listening.
The Mirror Conspiracy by Thievery Corporation (CD - 11/01/2003)
"The Mirror Conspiracy" (11/01/2003) Electronic Thievery Corporation, 18th Street Lounge MusicThievery Corporation: Eric Hilton, Rob Garza. Additional personnel: Bebel Gilberto, See-I, Pam Bricker, Lou Lou, Brother Jack (vocals); Desmond Williams (guiatr, keyboards, bass); Chris Vrenios (guitar); Rob Myers (sitar); Rick Harris, Zack Grady, Mike Thomas (horns); Roberto Berimbau (percussion). Engineers: Desmond Williams, Rob Garza, Eric Hilton. Recorded at ESL Studios, Washington, D.C. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Thievery Corporation's second album strengthens the duo's reputation as masters of downtempo, internationally influenced beats. Borrowing from bossa nova, dub reggae, French torch songs, Italian movie soundtracks, and jazz, THE MIRROR CONSPIRACY is a sophisticated, pleasurable listen. The album is sequenced beautifully, with sexy, world-weary tracks such as "Samba Tranquille" floating into the downtempo torch stylings of "Shadows of Ourselves." The album's international flavor comes from places as diverse as Jamaica, ("Focus on Sight" featuring I-See on vocals), Paris' Arab quarter ("Le Monde"), and opium dens and teahouses ("Indra," "Lebanese Blonde"). Rob Hilton and Eric Garza, the men behind Thievery Corporation, also have active remix and DJ careers. They're co-owners of Washington D.C.'s 18th St. Lounge, a club where the Thievery Corporation sound gets tested and exercised at each evening's DJ sets. Their remix album ABDUCTIONS AND RECONSTRUCTIONS is another excellent example of their masterful production work.

Abductions & Reconstructions by Thievery Corporation (CD - 04/06/1999)
"Abductions & Reconstructions" (04/06/1999) Electronic Thievery Corporation, 18th Street Lounge MusicWith their Thievery Corporation DJ and production house, and their Eighteenth Street Lounge label and (Washington, DC) nightclub, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton spent the late '90s helping redefine the club aesthetic and the club sound aesthetic. Sonically, they are downbeat cats, in love with shaggy hip-hop beats, dubby spaces, organic percussive textures from nearly every continent, and creamy lounge-perfect melodies. Aesthetically, they are hi-fi jet-setters, staying away from the dark and depressing, heading always toward the light, airy spotlight. On this set, David Byrne gets head-nodding rhythm; Stereolab is reduced to a swirl of melodies (including Laetitia's incomprehensible voice) and beats; Rockers Hi-Fi toast on a bed of fat bass lines and brass kicks, amidst a mellow dancehall haze. While every participant, from reggae stalwarts Black Uhuru to trip-hop opera sculptor Edson Cordeiro, may already be a sympathetic fit with the Corporation's methods and affinities, they get further remade in Garza and Hilton's image. And though it may be simplifyingly gauche to simply call Abductions & Reconstructions a funkier Stateside take on Kruder & Dorfmeister's shtick, it wouldn't be offbase either; and it'd be a compliment.

Versions [5/16] *
"Versions" (05/16/2006) Electronic Thievery Corporation, Eighteenth StreetVERSIONS, the follow-up to Thievery Corporation's well-received 2005 album, THE COSMIC GAME, presents a collection of laid-back remixes from Eric Hilton and Rob Garza. While the lauded electronica duo does offer up three of its own tracks (including the previously unreleased reggae number "Originality," with Sister Nancy), the set is primarily dedicated to other artists, whether it's a dreamy reworking of Nouvelle Vague's "This Is Not a Love Song" (a Public Image Ltd. cover), a beat-heavy tweaking of the Doors' "Strange Days," or a trip-hop take on Sarah McLachlan's "Dirty Little Secret." With its high-profile acts and inventive production, VERSIONS outshines Thievery Corporation's DJ-KICKS mix, placing it on par with the revered earlier compilation ABDUCTIONS & RECONSTRUCTIONS.
Cosmic Game [2/22] *
"Cosmic Game [Digipak]" (02/22/2005) Electronic Thievery Corporation, ESLThievery Corporation: Eric Hilton, Rob Garza (various instruments, electronics). Additional personnel include: Frank Orall (vocals, tabla, percussion); David Byrne, Gigi Rezende, Sista Pat (vocals); Roberto Santos (percussion); Perry Farrell, The Flaming Lips. Washington, DC-based sophisticates Thievery Corporation (producers Rob Garza and Eric Hilton) made several albums of superb down-tempo electronica prior to THE COSMIC GAME, and each release refined the duo's sensuous blend of deep, head-nodding beats, exotic world-music melodies, and lounge-ready atmospherics. This 2005 record builds on the strengths of the Corporation's previous albums, offering more stylish, club-targeted soundscapes to excellent effect. The series of all-star guests that parades through the album raises the Corporation's profile even higher. The Flaming Lips contribute additional instruments and vocals to the dreamy opener "Marching the Hate Machines (Into the Sun)," while the trip-hop-flavored "Revolution Solution" features Perry Farrell on vocals. Indian themes surface with vocalist Gunjan and sitar player Arjuna Pashwami on "Satyam Shivam Sundaram," and Verny Varela's singing gives the crowning touch to the bossa nova track "Ambicion Eterna." Even David Byrne makes an appearance, on the spacey mariachi boogaloo "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter." This fine mix of elements results in Thievery Corporation's most pop-oriented and accessible release, without sacrificing any of the group's ear-pleasing artistry.
DJ Kicks
"DJ Kicks" (01/01/2006) Electronic Thievery Corporation, !k7 RecordsThe DJ KICKS series of mixes was inaugurated by the K7 electronica label in 1995, when techno went mainstream and moved beyond dance clubs and into living rooms. By 1999, techno stars like Carl Craig and Kruder & Dorfmeister had contributed to the series, and it was time for Washington DC duo Thievery Corporation to craft their own DJ KICKS mix. One of the finest offerings of the DJ KICKS series, this set maintains a rather low-key mood throughout, in keeping with Thievery Corporation's usual modus operandi. Nevertheless, the sounds on offer are wide-ranging, including everything from the old-school lounge sounds of Les Baxter to the dub stylings of Rockers Hi-Fi and the warm, glowing acid-jazz sounds of Jazzanova, all intermixed with the Corporation's own distinctive downtempo cuts.
