"Ultimate Lounge [Digipak]" (06/10/2003) Electronic Various Artists, Water Music RecordsPersonnel: Hilde Drange, Yukimi Nagano (vocals). Audio Remixer: Tatsuo Sunaga. Illustrator: Angela Adams . Water Music's Ultimate Lounge is fairly eclectic, offering two discs of downtempo, lounge, and acid jazz that have a little more character than the label's usual fare. Disc one features Llorca & Nicole Graham's "Indigo Blues," a surprisingly kinetic, acoustic-based track; Montefiori Cocktail's "On a Clear Day," which, with its crooning vocals and bossa nova rhythms, is the closest the collection comes to offering genuine lounge music; and Tosca's slinky "Mango di Bango." The Dining Rooms' "Speak into the Microphone" and Sian's "What's Your Name" are more typical of the Water Music sound, but still have enough jazz and lounge elements to fit in with the more distinctive tracks. Disc two continues the collection's bossa nova kick with A Banda Cerrone's "Rimini Samba" before seguing into "Cholita" by Oversoul 7, a group that features former members of Supreme Beings of Leisure and continues that band's hazy brand of jazzy electronica. Mr. Scruff's "Champion Nibble" is one of the best -- and liveliest -- tracks on the collection, mixing funky guitars and brass with witty organ rolls. Other highlights include Alacran's tango-inflected "Refleco de Luna," Xploding Plastix's "Happy Jizz Girls," and Monlope's "Midnight Cowboy," which sounds like Ennio Morricone dabbling in trip-hop. Overall, Ultimate Lounge fits in with the rest of Water Music's stylish background music aesthetic, but occasionally it offers a little more than just musical wallpaper. ~ Heather Phares

"Chillout 06: The Ultimate Chillout" (01/01/2006) Electronic Various Artists, Nettwerk AmericaPersonnel: Zoe Johnston , Steve Edwards , Shirli McAllen (vocals); Ashwin Sood (drums); Bent (programming). Audio Mixers: Chris Potter ; Dave Bascombe; Greg Reely; Mike Hiratzka; Pierre Marchand; Steve Osborne. Audio Remixers: Rich Mowatt; Andy Bury; Kevin Brazell; Kevin Bazell; Alpha; Mike Hiratzka. Recording information: Paradise In The Hood Studio, Venice, CA; STratosphere Sound, New York, NY. Photographer: Pete Soos. Arrangers: Kevin Brazell; Kevin Bazell; Mike Hiratzka; Bent. This 14-song collection features mellow pop tunes from Ian Brown, the Perishers, and others. One of the key contributors to THE ULTIMATE CHILLOUT is Sarah McLachlan, who lends a colorful remix of her tune "World on Fire" to this compilation. Containing rainstorm effects, washy electric guitars, and an entrancing drum and bass groove, this song brims with intrigue and portent. The Postal Service's "Against All Odds" is another highlight on THE ULTIMATE CHILLOUT. Their cover of the 1984 Phil Collins hit begins with a fuzzy, monophonic vocal that abruptly shifts into stereo on the song's bridge; this contrast makes this romantic lyric resonate deeply. San Ilya's version of "Bellissimo" rounds out the release. One of the most beautiful tracks included here, this song features gorgeous orchestral swells, sparkling harp glissandos, and vibrant brass flourishes. All of this is set against the occasional distorted guitar riff and jazzy clarinet line. Unlike many relaxation albums, THE ULTIMATE CHILLOUT is not composed of ambient sounds or minimalist keyboard layers. In contrast, this compilation spotlights a number of creative pop artists whose music stimulates just as much as it relaxes.

"Chillout 2002: The Ultimate Chillout" (05/07/2002) Electronic Various Artists, Nettwerk AmericaPersonnel: BT (vocals, guitar, programming); Sophie Barker, Hafd¡s Huld, Sarah McLachlan, Sia Furler (vocals); Richard Fortus, Alan Simpson (guitar); Nick Bowels (acoustic guitar); John Themis (electric guitar, percussion); Mark Bates (keyboards); Paul Statham, Pascal Gabriel, James Sanger (programming). Audio Mixers: Demus; Alan Moulder; Mark Plati; Andy Chase ; Way Out West. Audio Remixers: Dusted; Mad Professor; Michael Woods; Attica Blues. Recording information: Ark Studios; STratosphere Sound, New York, NY. Arranger: BT. Chillout 2002: The Ultimate Chillout is one of the many post-2000 CDs designed for winding down, electronica style. Unfortunately, the album takes the same route as so many compilations do and places all of the strongest, big-name material in the first half so the second half can't help but sound underwhelming. Dido, Coldplay, Radiohead, Sarah McLachlan, and Massive Attack have a distinct commercial and artistic advantage over groups like Mandalay and Zero 7, and some of their strongest material is offered to make that point even more evident. The CD is effective at first, but the buildup does not pay off and the disc loses its drive toward the end. No one artist here is undeserving to be on this album, but the mainstream material should have been sprinkled about, not herded into the front. ~ Bradley Torreano

"Chillout 2003: The Ultimate Chillout" (03/11/2003) Electronic Various Artists, Nettwerk AmericaPersonnel: Eileen Rose, Maxi Jazz, Robbie Williams (vocals); Bailey Tzuke (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Greg Reely; Moby. Audio Remixers: Rich Mowatt; Andy Bury. Third in a yearly series of downbeat electronic pop, Nettwerk's Chillout 2003: The Ultimate Chillout balances various licensees with a few choices from the label's catalog, including Delerium, Sarah McLachlan, FC Kahuna, and Sounds From the Ground. This one lacks the heavy-hitters appearing on the previous year's edition (Radiohead, Massive Attack, Zero 7), though it has largely the same effect: pleasant, ephemeral music that functions best as musical wallpaper. As expected, female vocalists get the nod most often, with Angela McCluskey (featured on T?l?popmusik's "Love Can Damage Your Health") and the heavenly Kirsty Hawkshaw leading the way (shame that Hawkshaw's beautiful performance on "Fine Day" is sunk by an unflattering Frakkar remix). Other notables include tracks from Moby's 18 and FC Kahuna's Machine Says Yes, the electro-angst of Fischerspooner, and the well-chosen closer, New Order's "Your Silent Face" (close to 20 years older than the rest of the inclusions). ~ John Bush
