This powerful film depicts tragic events that occurred in late-17th Century Czechoslovakia. Just before the notorious witch hunts were finally left in the past, a coldhearted inquisitor made one last burst of attacks on innocent citizens, including nobles and merchants. After being tortured, these innocent victims were then burned alive at the stake, creating a community that was paranoid, angry, and deeply cruel. Otakar Vavra's unflinching drama contains shocking nudity and beautiful cinematography.
