"Sleep Cycle" (11/18/2004) Electronic Lane, Brannan, Ambient Circle MusicWith Sleep Cycle, Brannan Lane has crafted an atmospheric gem -- a new page in the book of ambient/space/atmospheric music, as well as new direction in Lane's compositional style. If you're not familiar with Lane's earlier ambient efforts, The Lost Caves of Thera and Troposphere, then this is definitely the best place to start, as his compositional style and production are in peak form. Lane's choice of timbre is always terrific, and it's at its best in Sleep Cycle. Lane's use of the variable-speed tape player as a sort of postmodern ambient instrument is really enjoyable. Incidentally, Robert Rich's early recording made great use of variable-speed tape players to a very similar, and equally pleasing, sonic effect; actually, the variable-speed player fits just as well in ambient, ? la Rich's early work, but John Cage's "Imaginary Landscape" works and Pierre Schaeffer's musique concrŠte come to mind as well. Thematically, this record is based on the varying stages of sleep; unfortunately, comparisons will be drawn to Rich's work, particularly his most recent Somnium, but Lane has his own voice here and his own sound. This is Lane's first truly atmospheric ambient work, and one worthy of the highest accolades. Sleep Cycle consists of ten tracks, but they run together cohesively as if they were one long-running whole. This is a stellar recording and one that will surely stand the test of time. ~ Matt Borghi

"Vintage Sound Effects" (03/19/1996) Jazz Instrument Sound Effects, ASV/TransacordRecording information: Between Gourock & Craigendoran (1956-1960); Bressingham Gardens, Norfold (1956-1960); British Rail Stations (1956-1960); Manchester, England (1956-1960). Living Era presents a very British, carefully assembled, and meticulously described series of historical sounds generated by actual objects and living beings rather than mere "sound effects" intended to approximate reality. Of the 67 tracks, the first 13 involve horses, pulling conveyances, carts, coaches, and corn cutters. Tracks 14 through 16 document the replacement of the beasts with steam-driven "traction engines" or tractors. On track 17 the steam is used to drive a "roundabout" or merry-go-round equipped with a calliope steam organ playing a six-part medley of old-time melodies. Electricity arrives with tracks 18 through 20 and the sounds of electrically powered tramcars navigating the avenues among motorcars. Various street-corner newsboys and an old-fashioned, bell-clanging fire engine give way to 11 little episodes in the lives of the steam ships -- their whistles, their engines, their paddles, and even the busy little telegraph. Tracks 35 and 36 provide brief examples of the sounds of a "colliery" or mining operation. Track 37 seems to extend the subterranean trope with the sounds of a London Underground or subway station during the 1950s. Tracks 38 through 48 reproduce the noises emitted by aeroplanes from both the First and Second World Wars. Tracks 49 through 52 re-create the presence of a mounted cavalry troop, brandishing swords and ultimately engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Now the progression of historical sounds becomes more varied: a horse-drawn gun carriage, a horse-drawn sleigh with jangling bells, barrel organs, children singing while skipping rope, street traffic, crowded markets and the London Stock Exchange, factory whistles and steam locomotives. The producers of this album of Vintage Sound Effects were so thorough as to include a page of detailed notes referring to most of the tracks, explaining who manufactured what, when and where the recordings were made, and other information deemed noteworthy. Perhaps the nicest of these explains that the traction engine heard on tracks 14, 15, and 16 was built by Fowler of Leeds in 1898, cost 140 pounds when new, was owned by Mr. E. Mack of Bodham, Norfolk, and was named Susannah. ~ arwulf arwulf

"Lost Caverns of Thera" (01/17/2001) Electronic Lane, Brannan, Ambient Circle MusicWith Lost Caverns of Thera, Brannan Lane has created some eerily dark ambient/space music. Lost Caverns of Thera is a bit darker than Troposphere, which followed later in 2000, and it's quite different from Lane's 2001 Sleep Cycle but, all and all, Lane has created an exciting work that seems to be a mix of ambient/space music veterans Steve Roach and Robert Rich's more tribal music. Lane seems to be taking a different direction with each and every recording he creates, while growing in leaps and bounds both in areas of production and composition. Lost Caverns of Thera is one of Lane's first forays into ambient/space music, and it certainly foreshadows those master works that would follow. While this isn't a definitive and representative example of Lane's excellent work, it is certainly as good a starting point as any. ~ Matt Borghi
