"Stop & Listen" (02/22/2005) Cajun Thompson, Suzy, ArhoolieA live recording from Berkeley's Freight & Salvage on April 10, 2004. Personnel: Suzy Thompson (vocals, guitar, fiddle); Suzy Thompson; Larry Hanks (vocals, bass voice, Jew's harp); Del Rey (vocals, resonator guitar, ukulele); Eric Thompson, Eric & Suzy Thompson (guitar, cuatro, tenor banjo); Dan Warrick (guitar); Kate Brislin (vocals); Dan Kluger (banjolele); Dave Murray (mandolin); Ben Sigelman (cello). Audio Mixers: Dave Wellhausen; Suzy Thompson; Bob Shumaker . Author: Mark Hoffmann. Photographers: Gail Wilson Smith; Irene Young. Arranger: Suzy Thompson. Suzy Thompson's Stop & Listen was recorded live at Berkeley's legendary Freight & Salvage club. A collection of fiddle rags, blues, and swing tunes, it puts on offer Thompson's stunning skills as an instrumentalist -- and she's no slouch as a singer, either. Given the loose and rough and tumble nature of the proceedings, Thompson's enlistment of the Thompson String Ticklers -- who include Eric Thompson, Dave Murray, Dan Kluger, Dan Warrick, and Ben Sigelman -- as well as the smoking guitarist Del Rey makes a for a celebratory affair. Standout tracks include "Black Cat Swing," "Sweet Loving Old Soul," and "Love Nuggets & Gravy." ~ Thom Jurek

"Lift the Lid and Listen" (06/03/2003) Folk Swarbrick, Dave, StoryvillePersonnel: Dave Swarbrick (mandolin, fiddle); Simon Nichol (guitar, bass); Roger Marriott (melodeon, harmonica flute, whistle); Allan Robertson (accordion); Savourna Stevenson (clarsach); Beryl Marriott (piano); Dave Pegg (bass); Bruce Rowland (drums). Recorded in 1978. English fiddler Dave Swarbrick holds quite a resum? in the folk community, showing up on recordings by Ewan MacCall and Ian Campbell, among others, as well as being part of the backbone of folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention from 1969 to 1984. Lift the Lid and Listen, his second solo album originally released in 1978, proves why he was in such demand. This set focuses mainly on traditional fiddle tunes that Swarbrick's fluid style suits nicely. The band he has assembled for this recording, including Fairport colleagues Simon Nicol and Dave Pegg, are in fine form, effortlessly moving through the songs. The lovely title track is a standout, with Savourna Stevenson on the cl rsach (Gaelic harp) providing backup to Swarbrick's mandolin, giving the only Swarbrick-penned song on the album a sweet feel of a music box lullaby, while "Three Sea Captains/Kate Dalrymple" hints at the folk-rock sound Fairport Convention had cultivated while remaining completely rooted in traditional folk. Lift the Lid and Listen is a great album for those looking to find an excellent example of traditional Celtic fiddling as well as those interested in where the great Fairport Convention fiddler's passions reside. ~ Gregory McIntosh

"Listen Listen" (11/25/2003) Rock & Pop Denny, Sandy, Island Records (USA)Island's single-disc Sandy Denny compilation does its best to offer a compact overview of the iconic singer's work. Focusing on the four records completed before her death in 1978, the 17-track Listen Listen winds comfortably through career highlights like "The North Star Grassman and the Raven," "Blackwaterside," and the gorgeous title track. Fans will contest the omission of tracks like "Carnival" and "It Suits Me Well," but for such a slim collection -- considering Denny's invaluable work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, and the Strawbs -- Listen Listen is a fine introduction to the artist's later days. Fans and non-fans alike would do better to pick up 2000's excellent double-disc career-spanning No More Sad Refrains: The Anthology. ~ James Christopher Monger
