Directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, INFERNAL AFFAIRS is a tense thriller featuring Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau and Tony Leung. The film follows the parallel lives of Ming (Lau), a cop who secretly reports to ruthless Triad crime boss Sam (Eric Tsang); and Yan (Leung), an undercover police officer who poses as a Triad member in Sam's gang. For Yan, the years of living in the criminal underworld have taken their toll, and he longs to return to regular police duty. However, the only person who knows Yan's true identity is his mentor Superintendent Wong (Anthony Wong), also the unsuspecting superior of Ming. When Wong's officers come face to face with Sam's gang, both leaders realize there are moles in their midst. Soon Yan and Ming must track each other down, leading to an inevitable confrontation. Unlike many contemporary Hong Kong films, INFERNAL AFFAIRS steers clear of over-the-top action in favor of a more stylized and subdued story that builds on emotional and psychological tension. Leung is riveting as the undercover cop who desperately wants a normal life, while Lau instills his corrupt character with confidence and charm that mask his deep inner conflict. These two stellar turns are ably supported by veteran actors Wong and Tsang, along with Sammi Cheng and Kelly Chen. A huge blockbluster in Asia, INFERNAL AFFAIRS is a landmark of Hong Kong cinema that deserves the same status abroad.

DAYS OF BEING WILD is the film that started it all for auteur art film director Wong Kar Wai, exhibiting many of the preoccupations and devices that would characterize his work throughout his career until the present time. The precise, almost melodic slowness of the pacing is reflective of the existential conundrum in which the characters are mired, offsetting the random, fleeting nature of the glimpses of love they are afforded. The first film in Wong's oeuvre that is a product of his happy alliance with cinematographer Christopher Doyle, it is a film of chance, the persistence and terrifying weight of time and memory, and the fortuitous accident that passes for love. Leslie Cheung stars as Yuddy, a vain, sexually predatory orphan whose mother abandoned him with her prostitute sister when he was very young; today, he lackadaisically searches for his birth mother while living his layabout lifestyle funded by his put-upon aunt. He approaches Lai (Maggie Cheung), a snack bar clerk, who rejects him but is haunted by Yuddy's classic line that they were friends for exactly one minute on that exact date; although realizing that he will never care for her she continues to pine for him, turning for solace to a cop (Andy Lau) who duly falls in love with her. Yuddy moves on to Mimi (Carina Lau), a beautiful cabaret dancer who is ultimately unable to maintain her tough facade when she falls for Yuddy; her vulnerability draws in Yuddy's best friend (Jackie Cheung), who idolizes him and is rejected by Mimi. The soap-opera quality of this web of love serves to illustrate the uncontrollable nature of emotions and the fact that they are governed by coincidence, underscoring the rather bleak existentialism of the film. However, the humanity depicted in the actors' stunning performances, and the dreamlike nature of the sequences that effect the impression of memory, redeem the seemingly unredeemable characters.

AS TEARS GO BY: Ah Wah (Andy Lau) is a mobster with a protoge--Fly (Jackie Cheung)--who can't stay out of trouble. Continually landing in one hot spot after another, Fly depends on Wah to get him out of each mess, and though the local mob boss has told Wah to push Fly into another line of work, Wah can't seem to say no to his friend. When his sick cousin (Maggie Cheung) comes to stay with him, he tries to keep his unsavory existence from entering her life, but to no avail. Fly's continual crises impinge on the love that begins to grow between the two, and though he begins to rethink his life, no good can come of this triangle. All the characters are very real, doing precisesly the things they should not be doing in a hopeless scramble for happiness. DAYS OF BEING WILD: DAYS OF BEING WILD: Leslie Cheung stars as Yuddy, a vain, sexually predatory orphan whose mother abandoned him with her prostitute sister when he was very young; today, he lackadaisically searches for his birth mother while living his layabout lifestyle funded by his put-upon aunt. HAPPY TOGETHER chronicles the stormy affair of a gay couple (Hong Kong superstars Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung) living as expatriates in Buenos Aires. The two possess very divergent ways of dealing with the world; Lai is more responsible, holding down a job at a tango club, while Ho turns tricks for a living. Inevitably, they grow apart painfully, but when Lai finds Ho beaten severely by a bad trick, the pair set about making another try. Stunning camera work by cinematographer Christopher Doyle. FALLEN ANGELS: is a neo-noir fantasy about a hitman who is disturbed to realize that he is falling for his partner. Throw into the mix a mysterious drifter who is searching for her ex-boyfriend and a humorous mute, and the results are an ingenious blend of art and entertainment, set amidst Hong Kong's bleak, urban landscape. One of the decade's most influential foreign films. CHUNGKING EXPRESS is a kinetic, offbeat jaunt through Hong Kong presented in two stories. The first concerns a young woman (Brigitte Lin) who has been double-crossed in a heroin deal and her budding romance with a lovelorn cop (Takeshi Kaneshiro). The second deals with another officer (Tony Leung) whose girlfriend has left him and the young waitress (Faye Wong) who tries to help him without his knowledge.

Following up his award-winning martial-arts drama HERO, director Zhang Yimou (JU DOU, RAISE THE RED LANTERN) tells an intricately detailed love story in the swordfighting epic HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, set during the final days of the Tang Dynasty. A mysterious group called the Flying Daggers is a dangerous threat to the government, so police captain Leo (Andy Lau) sends his right-hand man, Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro), undercover to try to find the rebels' location. Jin, a notorious playboy, pretends he is a roving warrior called "Wind" and befriends Mei (Ziyi Zhang), a blind dancer who is believed to be the daughter of the former leader of the Daggers. As he leads her across the countryside, they are "attacked" by government soldiers--but these battles are staged by Leo in order to convince Mei that Jin is on her side. But when a general orders that Mei must be captured at any cost, the fighting turns real, and Jin must decide between his loyalty to his job and his growing love for Mei. Meanwhile, Mei battles her feelings for Jin as well, trying to hide her true self. Zhang's gorgeous, compelling film is filled with beautiful singing and dancing, marvelous costumes, and wonderful locations; the scene in the Bamboo Forest is unforgettable, as is the Echo Game, which Leo and Mei play in the Peony Pavilion. There are also twists throughout the film and by the time the end comes, audiences will be spinning their heads in awe and amazement at the neverending wonders of this special movie. The film is dedicated to Anita Mui, who was to have a starring role before her unexpected death.

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON: Based on a novel by Wang Du Lu, Ang Lee's martial arts epic starts with the revenge plot common in the wuxia stories that Lee loved as a child, then adds a feminist twist. Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun Fat) is a legendary martial artist who has decided to pass on his sword, the Green Destiny, to a friend. Soon afterward, the sword is stolen by a masked female, setting in motion events that test the bonds of family, love, duty, and sisterhood. Chow appears with three generations of female stars: Cheng Pei Pei, a 1960s action heroine; Michelle Yeoh, the beauty queen turned 1980s action goddess; and newcomer Zhang Ziyi, who smolders as the princess who wants more than domestic tranquillity. Famed action choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping (THE MATRIX) stages jaw-dropping zero-G fights across rooftops, rivers, and bamboo trees, while Yo-Yo Ma punctuates the fisticuffs with dramatic cello solos.

Because the success of the first LUCKY STARS film (WINNERS AND SINNERS) had a lot to do with the Japanese market, the second film in the series takes place in the land of the rising sun and features Michiko Nishiwaki, the Japanese female bodybuilder. Jackie Chan plays an undercover cop who solicits the help of his gang of childhood friends--the five Lucky Stars, each of whom specializes in petty crimes and minor mishaps--to help him catch Japanese gangsters. Dough-faced Eric Tsang replaces John Sham as one of the Lucky Stars, while Sibelle Hu plays the femme du jour and the object of the Lucky Stars' lust. The film features several notable fights, including a surreal sequence in which Chan rumbles in an outlandish amusement park costume; in another memorable fight, director Sammo Hung battles in a yellow jumpsuit, à la Bruce Lee's GAME OF DEATH. The fantastic showdown at a haunted house attraction pits the Lucky Stars against a stellar cast of opponents: Hu versus Nishiwaki, Hung versus Lau Kar-wing, Yuen Biao versus Lam Ching-ying, and Chan versus Dick Wei.

Ringo Lam's straightforward action film THE ADVENTURERS begins its story of international drug and arms smuggling in Cambodia in 1975. A young boy, Yang, watches in horror as Ray Liu (Paul Chun), the head of a crime ring, murders both of his parents. When Yan (Andy Lau) grows up he becomes a pilot in the air force. After his attempt to kill Ray via an attack from his jet fighter fails, he adopts the name Mandy and goes to work for the CIA. He is assigned, conveniently enough, to put Liu out of business. But first, as part of the plan, he must go to San Francisco to kidnap Liu's daughter, Crystal (Ng Sin Lin). Through all this he is periodically aided by Mona (Rosamund Kwan), Liu's mistress who now wants more than anything to see Liu dead. After kidnapping Crystal and taking her to a remote cabin, Mandy is double-crossed and he and Crystal, naked under a black leather jacket (don't ask), escape after a wild gun battle. He discovers that she too hates her father, so they join forces and agree to split the ransom money from the kidnapping. But things don't go as planned, ending in a gigantic battle in the Cambodian jungle. With THE ADVENTURER, Lam shows a real flair for staging car chases, fights, and gun battles. It's not surprising that his next film was the big budget Hollywood production MAXIMUN RISK, with Jean-Claude Van Damme.
