Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx Handheld / Trail GPS
Description:
If there ever was a gold standard for handheld GPS devices, the GPSMAP 60CSx from Garmin would likely be that device. Despite being a couple of years old, when new models are released they are still compared to the 60CSx. With a bright and vivid screen (albeit smaller than newer models), a GPS chipset that is incredibly strong and accurate, and easy to use buttons the 60CSx deserves its mighty reputation. This model also features and electronic compass so you dont need to be moving in order for it to determine your heading. Along with that is a barometric altimeter which helps increase the accuracy of the elevation reading and can provide important clues regarding weather changes. If you are totally lost looking for a decent, reliable handheld GPS-- the 60CSx is a safe bet.
Our highest rated review:
I have been using the Garmin 60CSx for a while now. I use it mostly while hunting in the wilderness. The interface is quite intuitive and the keys are large enough to use with gloves on. The unit is rugged, water resistant, and has rubberized gripping

Garmin Oregon 400t Handheld / Trail GPS
Touch screen devices finally arrive for the masses with the Garmin Oregon series. The 400t comes loaded with Topo maps covering the USA (in 1:100,000 scale) and features an interface similar to the innovative Colorado series. The touch screen makes entering data and configuring the GPS a breeze. But take note, the quality of the screen isnt quite as good as other Garmin models, but that is a sacrifice you might be willing to make to get a touch screen. The screen sensitivity is great, even when covered with water and mud and with gloves on, however it is often difficult to read unless lighting conditions are perfect or it is relatively dark. Still, if you think using a GPS is as fun as the activity you are using it for, you will have fun tapping and scrolling along with the Oregon 400t.
Albeit pricey, this handheld touch-screen GPS device makes an excellent hiking companion—and a fun gadget for high-tech treasure hunting.

Wanted a GPS for quite some time, but never made the plunge. West Marine had a one day sale from $599 to $199 for the Garmin 76cs Plus. What an incredible deal, and what a great unit.

First the bad:

Steep learning curve
Best - Easy to download caches from the web site. Easy to use to "find next", mark as found, etc. Caching friendly device. Battery life is remarkable compared the eXplorist 500 I have been using. Worst - Not nearly as stable and sensitive as the ads made it out to be. I have found little (sometimes no difference) difference is sensitivity and accuracy between this device and the much less expensive Magellen eXplorist 500 I have been using. I spent the extra coin on this one because it sounded like the new chip receiver was leaps and bounds better than anything else. This has not proven to be the case.
