Text-to-Speech used to be reserved for more full featured GPS devices, but now we start to see it on entry level devices like the 255. While it does not have a widescreen, the smaller size makes it easier to slip into a pocket or purse.Despite the small package and price, the Nuvi 255 can be connected to live traffic systems with an optional traffic receiver. If you only need maps of the USA, consider the Nuvi 205 instead which has the same features but doesnt include map coverage of Canada when sold in the USA.

One of the first GPS devices to include text-to-speech (will say street names, not just turn right), the StreetPilot c340 was a great device. It still offers a good value, but is beginning to show its age. No longer in production, the c340 is much bulkier than more recent models with similar functionality, and the weaker GPS chipset will make the device take longer to get a signal.In its day, the Garmin c340 was a leader in the pack, but if you are going to spend three figures on a GPS device today-- you might as well get something a little more recent such as the Nuvi 260 which offers similar mapping and text-to-speech, but with a more powerful GPS chip and a much slimmer size.

Unlike competitive devices which simply allow address input, most of the menu system in the Nuvi 800 series will accept voice commands.While you cant describe this GPS as inexpensive, it does offer top of the line features for someone who spends quality time in their car every day. Other top-end features like route optimization and an FM transmitter are included, but Bluetooth and a traffic receiver are not included. Check out the Garmin Nuvi 860 for those features.

An internal, rechargeable battery, lets you use the StreetPilot inside or outside the vehicle. Car and home power adapters are also included. The suction-cup mount makes it easy to attach the system to any flat glass surface.
