Want (almost) all of the functions of a top of the line GPS at a middle of the road price? The Garmin Nuvi 265WT might be your dream GPS. Perhaps the biggest reason to consider the 265WT is the included lifetime traffic reporting system. While supported by occasional advertisements, the ads are fairly infrequent and unobtrusive. You will also find a widescreen display, Text-to-Speech, and Bluetooth technology for hands-free calling. About the only advanced feature not included is multi-destination routing-- but if you can live without that, this is a great GPS and a fantastic value when considering the lifetime traffic subscription.

The Garmin Nuvi 255w hits the sweet spot of functionality and price for many users. Combining affordability with features typically reserved for more advanced products such as Text-To-Speech and a widescreen. Want to take it even further? The Nuvi 255w is also compatible with optional live traffic reporting.A common complaint is the slightly underpowered speaker, however as long as you are not trying to listen to loud music and the GPS simultaneously, it shouldnt impact most users. With over six million Points of Interest your destination should be easily within reach.

How often do you find yourself wondering which lane you should be in? Lane Assistance is one of the new features found on the Nuvi 765T which will provide the answer to that question on some major intersections-- just dont expect it everywhere. Another new feature is 3D representations of some buildings in the largest cities. Something fun to have, but typically not a huge asset to navigation.Still, the Nuvi 765T packs many upper-end navigation features such as route optimization, Text-to-Speech for street names, life traffic reporting, and Bluetooth hands free calling. Some people however might find the slightly older Nuvi 760 a better bargain.

Despite being superseded by the Nuvi 785, the 780 is still a top performing GPS that can now be found at bargain prices. When compared with the legendary Nuvi 760, the only difference is that the 780 includes MSN Direct services for live traffic reporting and data services like weather. But here is a tip, you can sometimes find the Nuvi 760 and the GDB 50 traffic receiver as separate purchases for less than the cost of the 780. The Nuvi 760 plus the GDB 50 receiver will be identical to the 780.

Considered by many to be a diamond in the rough, the XL 330s from TomTom is a perfect start for people who dont know exactly how they might use their GPS. While still fairly easy to operate, the TomTom XL330s includes many top-end features such as multi-destination routing, Text-to-Speech, and a widescreen display. With a tremendously loud speaker, this TomTom is a good match for people who dont want to part with louder music or have a noisy vehicle. The EasyPort (tm) mount makes this GPS easy to carry or transport between vehicles.

If there ever was a gold standard for handheld GPS devices, the GPSMAP 60CSx from Garmin would likely be that device. Despite being a couple of years old, when new models are released they are still compared to the 60CSx. With a bright and vivid screen (albeit smaller than newer models), a GPS chipset that is incredibly strong and accurate, and easy to use buttons the 60CSx deserves its mighty reputation. This model also features and electronic compass so you dont need to be moving in order for it to determine your heading. Along with that is a barometric altimeter which helps increase the accuracy of the elevation reading and can provide important clues regarding weather changes. If you are totally lost looking for a decent, reliable handheld GPS-- the 60CSx is a safe bet.

Sometimes simple is better, and for that there is the Garmin Nuvi 205w. The Nuvi 205w does include voice prompts, but does not include the coveted Text-to-Speech feature to speak street names. The Nuvi 205w is also the Nuvi that comes with a widescreen and is easiest on the wallet.Despite the small price, the Nuvi 205w can be connected to live traffic systems with an optional traffic receiver. If you need maps of Canada, consider the Nuvi 255w instead as the 205w sold in the USA contains only maps of the contiguous United States.

Looking good on paper, the Garmin Nuvi 755T is an almost fully loaded GPS with a widescreen, multi-destination routing, FM Transmitter, an included traffic receiver and lifetime traffic subscription, and can even optimize the order of a long list of stops. You dont get Bluetooth like that found on the Nuvi 765T, but most people can live without that feature. However under the hood the 755T feels a bit underpowered and often doesnt give you quite enough warning of turns ahead. The older Nuvi 750 or the similarly equipped Nuvi 265WT might be a better option.

Perfect for people like sales reps, or just anyone who needs to visit a number of locations in one day. The Garmin Nuvi 760 offers a feature seldom seen in other GPS devices, the ability to take a list of destinations and figure out the most efficient order to visit them all.Other handy features include Bluetooth hands free calling, the ability to send audio from the GPS to your cars radio, as well as the ability receive live traffic updates through the traffic subscription service. If those sound like features you might need, the Nuvi 760 has become a benchmark other GPS devices will be compared to.

Sometimes simple is better, and for that there is the Garmin Nuvi 255. Text-to-Speech used to be reserved for more full featured GPS devices, but now we start to see it on entry level devices like the 255. While it does not have a widescreen, the smaller size makes it easier to slip into a pocket or purse.Despite the small package and price, the Nuvi 255 can be connected to live traffic systems with an optional traffic receiver. If you only need maps of the USA, consider the Nuvi 205 instead which has the same features but doesnt include map coverage of Canada when sold in the USA.

Part serious navigation system, part fun entertainment, the TomTom 720 is a GPS you can personalize to match your style. Dont like the default voices? Record your own or record your kids our spouses. Dont like the map colors? Switch between many of the color schemes available. Want to change the blue wedge that represents you on the map? Change to a different vehicle icon or build your own.But dont take all of the fun to mean this isnt a serious navigation system. The 720 can plan a trip with several destinations all wrapped up in one route, it can be connected to an optional traffic receiver that gets live traffic updates, and if you come across an error in the mapping database you can make map corrections and share those changes with other TomTom users.

Two of the most popular features in auto GPS devices are present in this simple to operate GPS. Text to speech enables the GPS to not only tell you the direction and distance to the turn, but will also speak the name of the street. A vivid widescreen display makes many of the menu buttons a little bit bigger (easier to tap) and will provide you with a little bit wider view of the next turn. While it doesnt have some of the fancy features of its siblings like multi-destination routing, optional traffic services, or Bluetooth, the Nuvi 260w still includes many of the must have features people are looking for today at an easy on the wallet price. Dont need text-to-speech? Check out the similar Nuvi 250 instead.

One of the least expensive GPS devices with text-to-speech (it can speak street names in addition to typical voice prompts) the Nuvi 260 is essentially a replacement for the highly acclaimed Nuvi 350. With a slimmer profile and an integrated antenna, the 260 is highly portable yet still comes with a good set of features.Other improvements over more basic models include maps of the USA and Canada pre-installed. Despite the compact size the speaker is loud, although the voice quality suffers a little bit at the highest volume levels. But that shouldnt impact most people from checking out one of the most popular models around.

Wouldnt it be nice if there was GPS that recorded the actual amount of time it takes drivers to travel over each road segment, and then used that data to calculate estimated travel times? Enter the TomTom 730. Using anonymous data from other TomTom users, routes and estimated travel times are now based in part on data from other drivers with TomTom devices. In many areas the data (dubbed IQ routes) makes a huge difference in route quality and time estimates over previous TomTom models.Another new feature is Active Lane Guidance which can help you determine not only which direction an exit leaves the highway, but also which lane you need to be in to take that exit. People who live on the Interstate will appreciate the feature, however right now that data is only sparsely available. An optional traffic receiver can also add to the intelligence of this super smart GPS.

Touch screen devices finally arrive for the masses with the Garmin Oregon series. The 400t comes loaded with Topo maps covering the USA (in 1:100,000 scale) and features an interface similar to the innovative Colorado series. The touch screen makes entering data and configuring the GPS a breeze. But take note, the quality of the screen isnt quite as good as other Garmin models, but that is a sacrifice you might be willing to make to get a touch screen. The screen sensitivity is great, even when covered with water and mud and with gloves on, however it is often difficult to read unless lighting conditions are perfect or it is relatively dark. Still, if you think using a GPS is as fun as the activity you are using it for, you will have fun tapping and scrolling along with the Oregon 400t.

Looking for a GPS with lots of navigation features, but without features you might never use like Bluetooth? The 750 might be a great option. The highlight of the Nuvi 750 is multi-destination routing. If you have a complex route to follow or multiple stops to make simply enter the locations into the 750 and it will optimize the order of the stops creating the most efficient route. While the 750 is compatible with live traffic reporting it does not come with a traffic receiver like many of the other 700 series Nuvi devices do. However if you decide later you want that function, the option is available.

Confused about all of the options when it comes to GPS? Just want a GPS that gets you from point A to B with no fuss? The Garmin Nuvi 200 might be your next best friend. No MP3 player, no live traffic reporting, no multi-segment routing, no text-to-speech (but it does have voice prompts), no widescreen. But that is part of the appeal of this ultra simple to operate GPS.The Nuvi 200 does one thing, and does it very well-- gets you to your destination with little fuss or distraction. But dont let the simplicity fool you. This basic Nuvi includes several million Points of Interest, has a longer battery life than competitive models, and Garmins interface is known for ease of use. It doesnt have maps of Alaska nor Canada so if your travels will take you north consider the otherwise identical Garmin Nuvi 250 instead. Most auto GPS devices are not designed to withstand the forces of Mother Nature. This poses a problem for motorcycle owners who want a great navigation system. Enter the Zumo. Designed to be glove friendly, water-proof, and designed with plastics that are more resistant to UV rays and fuel vapors, the Zumo is designed to be out in the open air with you. While the extra protection does come at a cost, that cost is likely less than replacing a traditional auto GPS not designed for outdoor use. Other motorcycle friendly functions include fuel level warnings with the ability to quickly route to you to the nearest fill-up station, as well as the ability to plan routes ahead of time on your computer and share those routes with other riders.

If is a GPS is only as good as its maps, the PN-20 by DeLorme is one of the best GPS devices out there. With the ability to display vector based topo maps, scanned USGS 1:24,000 scale topo maps, satellite imagery, 1 meter aerial photography, and NOAA marine charts-- other devices on the market today simply are little match for the mapping versatility of the PN-20.While map redraws can be a little sluggish at times, most people will use the PN-20 for relatively slow moving sports like hiking, skiing, kayaking, and geocaching. The PN-20 shines in all of those activities. If you are map obsessed, the PN-20 will likely become your latest obsession.

Powerful performance in a simple package. Perhaps the primary reason to pick the ONE 130s is the EasyPort mount. Currently unique to TomTom, this mount style makes it easy to take the GPS with you when you leave the car-- mount included, and slip it into your pocket or purse. No other GPS + mount combination will fold into such as small size... no more excuses to leave the GPS in the car.But dont let these conveniences fool you into thinking this GPS is a slouch. While it doesnt have as good of battery life as other devices in this class, the TomTom ONE 130s will speak street names in addition to directions, can be connected to an optional traffic receiver, and allows users to make and share map corrections with other TomTom users. If the innovative mount doesnt appeal to you, consider the Garmin Nuvi 260. Or if your eyes would be happier with a widescreen, look at the TomTom XL 330s. Otherwise, the 130s will be a solid companion for your next trip.

The Nuvi 360 is no longer in production so there is a danger that if you purchase the GPS now, it could come with an older map. This model also comes with an older flip up style antenna which is slightly less convenient. It still remains a very popular model however, and if you are not concerned with updated roads, the Nuvi 360 could be a great bargain. This Nuvi will speak street names in addition to standard voice prompts (text-to-speech). The mount is still one of the best designs in the industry where the power cord plugs into the mount which makes connecting and disconnecting the GPS to the mount easier. Bluetooth hands free calling also became available on this early Nuvi.

Garmins first device with speech recognition technology, the Nuvi 850 will listen to your commands and then guide you appropriately. Unlike competitive devices which simply allow address input, most of the menu system in the Nuvi 800 series will accept voice commands. While you cant describe this GPS as inexpensive, it does offer top of the line features for someone who spends quality time in their car every day. Other top-end features like route optimization and an FM transmitter are included, but Bluetooth and a traffic receiver are not included. Check out the Garmin Nuvi 860 for those features.

It can be hard to match the bang for your buck you get with the TomTom ONE 3rd Edition. Correct or report it though MapShare and download changes from other users. Thinking you might want to connect a live traffic reporting receiver someday? An optional accessory is available to add live traffic information. The small size and small cost might make you think about carrying this GPS along while walking in a city-- but be careful as the battery life isnt quite as good as other models in this class and there is no hold switch to prevent accidental touch screen input, both features found on the similar Garmin Nuvi 200. The NAVIGON 2100 Max is close to being that diamond in the rough. With an impressive list of features such as multi-destination routing, a widescreen display, and optional live traffic reporting, the 2100 Max from NAVIGON would just about win any feature-to-price comparison. It does have a few flaws though, similar to other NAVIGON models. Many of the buttons are very tiny making them difficult to tap and the touch screen isnt quite as sensitive as competitive devices. Still, many of the optional add-ons like lifetime traffic updates and the FreshMaps program which essentially gets you three years worth of map updates for the price of one might just make you overlook some of those flaws and make this your pick.
