"Grease [1994 Broadway Revival Cast]" (06/28/1994) Soundtracks Original Cast, RCA Victor Records (USA)Principal cast includes: Rosie O'Donnell (Betty Rizzo); Brian Bradley (Vince Fontaine); Marcia Lewis (Miss Lynch); Michelle Blakely (Patty Simcox); Paul Castree (Eugene Florczyk); Heather Stokes (Jan); Megan Mullally (Marty); Sam Harris (Doody); Hunter Foster (Roger); Jason Opsahl (Kenickie); Carlos Lopez (Sonny Latierri); Jessica Stone (Frenchy); Susan Wood (Sandy Dumbrowski); Ricky Paull Goldin (Danny Zuko); Clay Adkins, Patrick Boyd, Denis Jones (Straight A's); Billy Porter (Teen Angel). Recorded at Soundtrack Studios, New York, New York on April 25, 1994. Includes liner notes by Robert Sandla. All songs written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, except "Since I Don't Have You" (Joseph Rock/James Beaumont/The Skyliners). For this Broadway revival of the 1972 show, Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey's score has been reorchestrated and a genuine oldie has been added, The Skyliners' "Since I Don't Have You." But Grease! is still the same shallow pastiche of 1950s high school references, still unsure whether it wants to celebrate or satirize. The new cast sings with gusto (including star Rosie O'Donnell, who is more comedienne than vocalist), but this still isn't much of a show. ~ William Ruhlmann Grease is one of the classic musicals that the majority of the public associates with the movie incarnation, although there are plenty of stage versions that are just as well done, if not better. The stage musical often has different songs than the movie adaptation, and different plot twists. Grease opened originally in 1972, starring Carole Demas and Barry Bostwick (of Rocky Horror Picture Show fame). Sandy Dumbrowski (or Sandra D.) and Danny Zuko have a summer romance; however, when they run into each other at school, they find they are socially incompatible. She attempts to change herself to suit him, he changes himself to suit her, but finally her alteration works and everybody's happy. Grease has famous songs like "Greased Lightnin, '" "It's Raining on Prom Night" and "We Go Together" -- although the most famous songs from the movie ("Summer Nights" and "You're the One that I Want") were written specifically for the screen version. The 1994 Broadway revival starred comedienne Rosie O'Donnell as Rizzo, and what O'Donnell might have lacked as far as technical vocal training she more than made up for in energy and spunk. The addition of the song "Since I Don't Have You" helped create a general air of nostalgia in the proceedings. ~ Sarah Erlewine
