"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Box Set [Box]" (10/29/2002) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Epic (USA)As with everything involved with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the game's soundtrack is epic in scope and incredibly detailed. Though countless games have offered soundtracks, GTA: Vice City offers a unique twist on the format: Its soundtrack has seven volumes, one apiece for Vice City's radio stations. Though games such as Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future also revolved around the concept of soundtrack-as-radio-station, GTA: Vice City's soundtrack is the most ambitious -- and impressive -- realization of this idea yet, offering DJs with distinctive personalities, tailored track listings, and realistic bumpers, voice-overs, and commercials. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Box Set collects all seven volumes into a sprawling, almost overwhelming set that spans the heavy metal of volume one, the new wave of volume two, volume three's soft rock, volume four's pop hits, volume five's hip-hop and electro, volume six's funk and urban hits, and the Latin jazz of volume seven. Several of the discs -- volumes one, five, and seven in particular -- are solid enough collections of their styles of music that they match, if not surpass, many "serious" collections of metal, hip-hop, and Latin music. The bumpers, voice-overs, and commercials on each of the volumes give a good idea of the DJ and radio stations' personalities, and help further blend the line between fantasy and reality in the game. Grand Theft Auto fanatics may want to buy the box set instead of purchasing each volume individually to get all of the Windows- and Mac-compatible multimedia material, which includes wallpaper, screenshots, screensavers, movie clips, and most importantly, the unique cheat codes that come on each disc. The cheats do everything from turning all the cars pink to making Vice City's skies perpetually sunny to unlocking a variety of weapons, making Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Box Set equally entertaining and useful for the die-hard GTA: Vice City gamer. ~ Heather Phares

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 4: Flash FM" (10/29/2002) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Epic (USA)As with everything involved with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the game's soundtrack is epic in scope and incredibly detailed. Though countless games have offered soundtracks, GTA: Vice City offers a unique twist on the format: its soundtrack has seven volumes, one apiece for Vice City's radio stations. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 4: Flash FM presents DJ Toni, a valley girl stuck in Florida who plays an authentic set of pop hits from the '80s, the era in which GTA: Vice City is set. The volume's standout tracks include Hall & Oates' "Out of Touch," ELO's "Four Little Diamonds," Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," and Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days." Bryan Adams, the Outfield, Lionel Richie, Go West, and Talk Talk are some of the other usual suspects included on the soundtrack, adding even more authenticity to the set. The commercials for "Blox," a military-grade germicide, and "Just the Five of Us," a sitcom that could've been a precursor to Married With Children, are also pretty amusing. For GTA addicts, there's an added incentive to buy the soundtracks: each disc comes with bonus multimedia content (Windows and Mac compatible), including wallpaper, screen shots, a screen saver, a movie clip, and most importantly, a special cheat code unique to each volume of the soundtrack. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 4: Flash FM's cheat code unlocks the self-explanatory Pink Cars Cheat, which makes all of the cars in the game pink. Like, totally. ~ Heather Phares

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 3: Emotion 98.3" (10/29/2002) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Epic (USA)As with everything involved with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the game's soundtrack is epic in scope and incredibly detailed. Though countless games have offered soundtracks, GTA: Vice City offers a unique twist on the format: its soundtrack has seven volumes, one apiece for Vice City's radio stations. Though games such as Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future also revolved around the concept of soundtrack-as-radio station, GTA: Vice City's soundtrack is the most ambitious -- and impressive -- realization of this idea yet, offering DJs with distinctive personalities, tailored track listings, and realistic bumpers, voice-overs, and commercials. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 3: Emotion 98.3 presents DJ Fernando Martinez, a wannabe Latin lover who plays an authentic set of power ballads, love songs, and soft rock from the '80s, the era in which GTA: Vice City is set. The volume's standout tracks include John Waite's "Missing You," Squeeze's "Tempted," the ultimate power ballad (Night Ranger's "Sister Christian"), and Jan Hammer's "Crockett's Theme," which is a clever way to pay homage to one of the game's inspirations, Michael Mann's classic TV series Miami Vice. Toto, Foreigner, Mister Mister, and REO Speedwagon are some of the other usual suspects included on the soundtrack, adding even more authenticity to the set. Though this volume of the soundtrack might be the hardest to actually listen to, it certainly does showcase the game attention to all the musical details of the '80s. However, the commercials for "Knife After Dark," a slasher flick, and "Petstuffers," a taxidermy service for house pets, do add to the collection's sense of humor. 3: Emotion 98.3's cheat code unlocks the self-explanatory Chicks With Guns Cheat, which makes the player's gang into chicks with guns, offering even more proof that love hurts. ~ Heather Phares

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Greatest Hits" (11/26/2002) R&B Original Soundtrack, Epic (USA)Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Greatest Hits collects some of the highlights from the amazing, and amazingly big, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City seven-disc soundtrack series and box set. Picking out just 18 of the best songs from this 100-plus-track series/box is a daunting task, but this compilation does a pretty good job. From the Jan Hammer-ific "The Theme from Vice City" to Hall & Oates' "Out of Touch," Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," Blondie's "Atomic," and A Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran (So Far Away)," -- which is virtually the game's unofficial theme song -- Greatest Hits distills the feeling of the larger soundtracks, even if it doesn't include all of the best songs. ~ Heather Phares

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 5: Wildstyle" (10/29/2002) R&B Original Soundtrack, Epic (USA)As with everything involved with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the game's soundtrack is epic in scope and incredibly detailed. Though countless games have offered soundtracks, GTA: Vice City offers a unique twist on the format: its soundtrack has seven volumes, one apiece for Vice City's radio stations. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 5: Wildstyle presents Mr. Magic, a pioneering hip-hop head who plays an authentic set of rap, hip-hop, and electro from the '80s, the era in which GTA: Vice City is set. The volume's standout tracks include Run DMC's "Rock Box," Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," Mantronix' "Bassline," Cybotron's "Clear," Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force's "Looking for the Perfect Beat," and Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks." Actually, trying to pick highlights on this collection is something of a fool's errand, since this volume of the soundtrack is probably the most consistent and inventive in the set, and indeed a very respectable collection of hip-hop and electro on its own terms, with artists like Grandmaster Flash, Zapp & Roger, Davy DMX, Man Parrish, and Whodini rounding out the album. Likewise, the commercials for "Degenatron" an early home video game system, and "Maibatsu Thunder," a Japanese car, are among the best parodies of the soundtrack series. 5: Wildstyle's cheat code unlocks the first Weapon Cheat, which provides various useful weapons. As with this volume's music, it's one of the best cheats of the series. ~ Heather Phares

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 2: Wave 103" (10/29/2002) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Epic (USA)As with everything involved with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the game's soundtrack is epic in scope and incredibly detailed. 2: Wave 103 presents Adam First, a pretentious, right-wing, eyeliner-wearing DJ who plays an authentic set of new wave, post-punk, and synth pop from the '80s, the era in which GTA: Vice City is set. The volume's standout tracks include the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way," Thomas Dolby's "Hyperactive!," Blondie's "Atomic," and Romeo Void's "Never Say Never." Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Tears for Fears, A Flock of Seagulls, and Human League are some of the other usual suspects included on the soundtrack, adding even more authenticity to the set. This volume of the soundtrack is slightly less special than Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 1: V-Rock -- though songs like Nena's "99 Luftballons" and Kim Wilde's "Kids in America" certainly add to the soundtrack's atmosphere, they're more typical picks than some of the music on the first volume. There's also no parody band on this collection, which seems like a missed opportunity. However, DJ Adam First is a spot-on send-up of the era -- he's like a cross between Nick Rhodes and Patrick Bateman. The commercials for "Sissy Spritz," an extreme hairspray, and "Synth and Son," a keyboard store, are musically garish enough to be mistaken for actual ads, and also help blur the lines between fantasy and reality. 2: Wave 103's cheat code unlocks the Mad Cars Cheat, which makes all the cars drive even more aggressively, so the game player can be on the cutting edge of music and road rage. ~ Heather Phares

Though countless games have offered soundtracks, GTA: Vice City offers a unique twist on the format: its soundtrack has seven volumes, one apiece for Vice City's radio stations. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 7: Radio Espantoso presents DJ Pepe, a Cuban-wannabe sports broadcaster who plays an authentic set of Latin and Latin jazz. The volume's standout tracks include Deodato's "Super Strut," Mongo Santamaria's "Mama Papa Tu," Tito Puente's "Mambo Gozon," and Irakere's "Aguanile," while pieces by artists like Unresta, Beny Mor?, and Lonnie Liston Smith add to the collection's authenticity. As with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 1: V Rock and Grand Theft Auto Vice City: Vol. 5: Wildstyle, this volume is so well chosen that it could hold its own with "serious" collections of Latin jazz. The commercials for "Fernando's Medallion," jewelry by DJ Fernando Martinez of Emotion 98.3, and "Think Your Way to Success," a dubiously helpful self-help program, help blur the lines between fantasy and reality. For GTA addicts, there's an added incentive to buy the soundtracks: Each disc comes with bonus multimedia content (Windows and Mac compatible), including wallpaper, screenshots, a screensaver, a movie clip, and most importantly, a special cheat code unique to each volume of the soundtrack. Appropriately enough, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Vol. 7: Radio Espantoso's cheat code unlocks the Sunny Weather Cheat, which provides the perfect atmosphere for listening to the collection's summery music. ~ Heather Phares
