"An American Paradox" (04/23/2002) Hardcore/Punk Strung Out, Fat Wreck ChordsStrung Out includes: Jason (vocals); Jake, Rob (guitar); Chris (bass); Jordan (drums). Recorded at Westbeach Studios, Hollywood, California. This California-based punk rock combo has been rocking since the early '90s, slowly building up their fan base through the usual grueling touring schedule that was the only option available to a band devoid of hits. That's all changed with their fifth full-length album, the defiantly energetic AN AMERICAN PARADOX. Strung Out delivers a tightly produced and played set that's a culmination of all that's gone before, all polka-fast beats, angst-y vocals and slabs of thick guitar. They're not above producing their own brand of pop, though--witness the infectious almost-power pop of "Dig"--but mostly they speak to the preoccupations of disaffected youth with anthems such as "Kill Your Scene" and the mad headlong rush of the album opener, "Velvet Alley." There's some nifty guitar work and tricky time changes, too, on "Cult of the Subterranean," which shows they've spent at least some of their time in the tour van wisely, while "Cemetery" displays their awareness of a well-played metal riff. PARADOX is that best-of-both-worlds combination of punk energy and musical savvy that's a rare find today, and even rarer on the Billboard charts.

"American Psycho" (05/07/2005) Hardcore/Punk Misfits (Punk) (The), Geffen Records (USA)The Misfits includes: Michael Graves (vocals); Doyle (guitar); Jerry Only (bass); Dr. Chud (drums). Although the authenticity of the Misfits without the distinctive Elvis-in-Hell vocal operatics of founding father Glenn Danzig is somewhat doubtful, AMERICAN PSYCHO is a worthy successor to the band's legacy. New vocalist Michael Graves manages a fair evocation of Danzig's bellow, and the traditional backing vocals are still in place, courtesy of Jerry and Doyle. Most importantly, the songwriting manages to evoke the classic Misfits sound without getting derivative. "Crimson Ghost," "Mars Attacks," and the title track wouldn't have sounded out of place on EARTH A.D., and "Walk Among Us" evokes that classic album without sullying its memory. The guitars are a little meatier and a little more metallic, but the feel of the Misfits is here. Until a real reunion, this will do nicely.

"The American in Me *" (04/20/2004) Rock & Pop Avengers (The), DBK WorksThe Avengers: Penelope Houston (vocals); Brad Kent, Greg Ingraham (guitar); Jimmy Wilsey (bass guitar); Danny Furious (drums). Liner Note Author: Greil Marcus. Recording information: 1978 - 1979. The unsung heroes of early American punk rock made only one EP and a handful of singles, remarkable for their tunefulness, lyrical acumen, and the performance of lead singer Penelope Houston--one of the few great frontwomen and songwriters of the '77-era punk scene. This album gathers some live recordings of the band, blistering takes of their best material. The title track is a classic statement of despair, cynicism, and punk rock redemption.
