"All My Friends Are Going Death [EP]" (04/04/2005) Rock & Pop Some Girls (Hardcore), Deathwish RecordsSome Girls include: Wes Eisold, Rob Moran, Justin Pearson. Some Girls is something of a hardcore supergroup comprised of Wes Eisold (Give Up the Ghost, American Nightmare), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Over My Dead Body), and Justin Pearson (Locust, Swing Kids, Holy Molar). As the album title suggests, though, these guys have musical concerns that go a bit beyond the typical louder-faster-shorter mindset. Make no mistake, these songs are plenty loud and fast and short, but the band's ferocious sound is leavened by occasionally interesting guitar textures and an unusual tag-team vocal approach that harks back to 1980s hip-hop in spirit and evokes other, equally unlikely influences as well -- or am I the only one who hears echoes of early XTC in "Sex and Glue" (and maybe even in the brilliant "Rains")? All My Friends Are Going Death includes material from the band's previous EPs (Rains and Blues) as well as a handful of new recordings and some demo material annoyingly hidden at the end of the program behind 50-some-odd empty 12-second tracks. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

"Black Leather Girl" (06/13/2000) Hardcore/Punk Abrasive Wheels, Captain Oi! Records (UK)Recorded at Strawberry Studios, 1984's Black Leather Girl was Leeds Oi! band Abrasive Wheels' second album, and found the band maturing rapidly. Soaring vocal harmonies, saxophones, and smooth arrangements characterize a record that, though it remains unmistakably abrasive, also packs a glossy edge that suggested future recordings might even verge on mainstream rock. Of course that was not to be, and Black Leather Girl stands as the last will and testament of a band that really deserved a longer life. The band's key energies remain intact, of course. The rhythms might not be quite as frenetic as they were across When the Punks Go Marching In, but they pulsate all the same, with the title track an especially incendiary slab of post-Oi! brilliance. The contagiously melodic single "The Prisoner," too, sparkles, while the Wheels' take on "Jailhouse Rock" could incite a riot in a monastery. Five bonus tracks on the Captain Oi! reissue include single mixes of "The Prisoner," "Jailhouse Rock," and "Black Leather Girl," plus the B-side "Sonic Omen" and the stand-alone 45 "Banner of Hope." All add up to the band's most fulfilled release ever. ~ Dave Thompson

"Real Woman" (06/07/1999) Hardcore/Punk Poison Girls, Cooking Vinyl Records (USA)When this was recorded in 1999, P.G. (who are definitely rated R) frontwoman Vi Subversa was 65 years old. But taking into consideration titles such as "Underbitch" and "Alienation" it's little suprise that the band sounds as angry and politically-charged as they did when the hit the scene 20 years prior. A sampler from the overall Statement: The Complete Recordingd box set that collected Poison Girls' work, Real Woman is a fun and thrilling introduction to Vi Subversa and her compatriots' compositions over the years. There's no chronological or thematic organization to the 12-song collection -- just a sharp selection, an appreciative essay, and a sense of Subversa's do-what-you-want-when-you-want spirit. Kicking off with the great title track (hilarious line: "You can't squeeze me like a lemon, so squeeze your own!"), which has a wonderfully jaunty lope, Real Woman demonstrates above all else that rather than being simply being part of the Crass orbit, the group very much had its own sharp style. Check out the great arrangements on "Underbitch," for instance -- it wouldn't sound out of place on a Gang of Four record on the one hand, but spiking the crisp, cold funk with a sudden breakdown into tape loops and a cappella semi-chanting is the group's own genius. Not everything need be so tightly wound, of course -- where the band is often like Crass is its ability to try all sorts of approaches, like the cool pulse and shimmer of "Voodoo Pappadollar." The piano-led "Promenade Immortelle" is one of the gentlest moments of '80s punk, soft singing and low-key speaking conveying lyrical messages through understatement, with a synth-tinged conclusion matched by a high, haunting, wordless vocal. Subversa's singing is especially great throughout -- proudly English, discursive, and downright fun even when the message is as sharp as can be; if anything, she could easily stand up next to Marianne Faithfull's work in the '80s and beyond. The inclusion of four live tracks, despite some thin recording quality that favors the bass well over the guitars on tracks like "Daughters and Sons," is a good touch. ~ Ned Raggett
