"This Is Satire [PA] *" (05/02/2006) Rock & Pop None More Black, Fat Wreck ChordsNone More Black: SIT, DR (strings); C&C (drums); Silverfox (percussion); Janet Morgan, Heather McGinniss, J. Robbins. Personnel: Janet Morgan, J. Robbins (vocals); Heather McGinniss (acoustic guitar). Audio Mixer: J. Robbins. Recording information: Magpie Cafe, Baltimore, MD (12/2005-01/2006). On THIS IS SATIRE, None More Black offer up a selection of eclectic punk songs that range from blistering hardcore numbers to much slower, almost bluesy tunes (see the closer, "Majestic"). Most of the tracks, however, fall comfortably between the extremes: hook-heavy pop-punk songs with wildly infectious choruses. Led by former Kid Dynamite singer Jason Shevchuck, None More Black can rock as hard as they want to. On this album, though, it's great fun listening to the band turn their musicianship to other ends.

"Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three [PA]" (10/08/2002) Hardcore/Punk Various Artists, Sanctuary (USA)Includes liner notes by Henry Rollins. Personnel: Jim Wilson (vocals, guitar); Dean Ween (vocals, electric guitar); Jason MacKenroth (vocals, drums); Chuck Dukowski, Corey Taylor, Danny B. Harvey, Exene Cervenka, Marcus Blake, Henry Rollins, Jeff Moreira, Ice-T, Inger Lorre, Josh Homme, Kira Roessler, Lemmy, Matt Freeman , Neil Fallon, Nick Oliveri, Tim Armstrong, Iggy Pop, Casey Chaos (vocals). Audio Mixer: Clif Norrell. Liner Note Author: Henry Rollins. Recording information: Cherokee Studios, LA, CA (05/2002). Photographer: Henry Rollins. Much has been said about the West Memphis Three, a group of three young men who many feel were wrongfully convicted of a cult-like slaying of three eight-year-old boys in Arkansas back in 1993. An informative website (http://wm3.org) and a pair of documentaries, Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills and Paradise Lost 2: Revelations, helped raise its attention level, which is how many became aware of the case, including Rollins Band/ex-Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins. Inspired to lend a hand in providing aid in the young men's defense (who were all given either life or death sentences), Rollins assembled a benefit record. 2002's Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three is not your average tribute or benefit record, as some of the best-known rock singers have lent their vocals to remakes of Black Flag classics (backed by the modern-day Rollins Band lineup). Rollins himself calls the album "absolutely bulletproof," and he's not kidding, as evidenced by explosive renditions of "Fix Me" (Iggy Pop), "Six Pack" (Mike Patton), "Revenge" (Tom Araya), and "Jealous Again" (Nick Oliveri) prove. In addition to Rollins handling vocals on several tunes (the first time he's performed Black Flag material since the band's last tour in 1986), several other former Black Flag members lend a hand as well, including Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, and Kira Roessler. If only every benefit/tribute album could be as stellar as Rise Above. ~ Greg Prato

"Return to the Black Hole" (03/17/1998) Hardcore/Punk The Adolescents, Triple X EntertainmentPersonnel: Tony Adolescent (vocals); Frank Agnew, Rikk Agnew (guitar); Casey Royer (drums). Audio Mixer: Jim Goodwin. Recording information: Country Club, Reseda, CA (12/1989). Return to the Black Hole once again shows that reunions can be as hot hot hot as Guatemala in July -- if the right lineup is reconstructed. And that's a key. This December 1989 show at the Country Club in the L.A. Valley town of Reseda featured all five original Adolescents members that had originally blitzed Tinseltown with the classic, self-titled first LP and the Welcome to Reality EP eight years before. Not only does Return present a group of not-so-adolescent late twenty-somethings who play their instruments better than in the band's old days -- the sheer glee of firing off together again is evident. This rips. This shreds. This blasts. You don't even need to know that this group helped kick off the second wave of punk in Southern California; having initially been outsold only by the Dead Kennedys, they were as popular as Circle Jerks, Black Flag, T.S.O.L., Youth Brigade, Channel 3, Agent Orange, and the young Social Distortion and Bad Religion. All you have to do is take in the might of the soaring leads more or less pioneered by Rikk Agnew and his brother Frank, even more thick and stinging live, and you understand. The Agnews' string munchings roar through the best songs here: the majestic "No Way," the manic "Who Is Who," the martial "Welcome to Reality," and the epics "Creatures" and "Kids of the Black Hole." Throughout, the Agnews' devilish sense of melody is well-served by Tony Cadena's guttural growl. And though it's hard to stand his mates way off on the key harmony of "Amoeba," it's the only rust the quintet shows. In the end, the only bad thing about this CD is how bad you'll want to see, and not just hear, this loud, proud concert. ~ Jack Rabid

"Lead Us to Reason" (01/25/2005) Heavy Metal Black Maria (The), Victory Records (USA)The Black Maria: Chris Gray (vocals); Alan Nacinovic (guitar); Mike De Eyre (keyboards, bass instrument); Derek Petrella (drums); Kyle Bishop. Personnel: Kyle Bishop (vocals, guitar); Keith Buckley (vocals). Audio Mixer: Mike Green . Recording information: Reaction Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (08/2004); Signal To Noise Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (08/2004). Boasting one-time Grade frontman Kyle Bishop, the Black Maria achieves a comfortable balance of alluring hooks and sonic chaos on its impressive entry, Lead Us to Reason. Airwave-ripe screamo is in abundance here, as evidenced by the accessible roar of "Betrayal" and the aggressive opener "The Memento." If the latter's bleak lyrical tone ("I have this overwhelming urge/To suck in one good breath and scream/There is no love left inside of me") permeates the album, the dark albeit big rock roar of tunes like "Organs" and "Ash" are a perfect match. By lending pop subtleties to metallic punk, the Black Maria has proved its motives come closer to crafting a top-notch disc than reaching for the brass-ring peers like My Chemical Romance and the Used have already snagged. Financial rewards may be imminent, but they are also well warranted. ~ John D. Luerssen

"Annihilate This Week [Single]" (01/15/1991) Hardcore/Punk Black Flag (Punk), SSTBlack Flag: Henry Rollins (vocals), Greg Ginn (guitar), Kira (bass), Anthony Martinez (drums). Black Flag (Punk): Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Kira (bass guitar); Anthony Martinez (drums). This SST EP captures Black Flag in three intense live moments. Henry Rollins sounds enraged, and the band teeters constantly on the verge of musical collapse. Although true fans will still insist that Black Flag had sold out long before this EP, you couldn't tell it by listening to their lean and hungry sound here. The original EP has an amusing drug paraphernalia-infested cover that would be banned by some record stores today, but which flew by with few ripples somehow in 1986. ~ Jeff Crooke

"Paradise" (09/04/2005) Hardcore/Punk Paint It Black, Jade Tree RecordsPaint It Black: Andy Nelson (vocals, bass guitar); Colin McGinnis (guitar); David Wagenschutz, Dan Yemiri. Personnel: Dan Yemiri (vocals, guitar); Andy Nelson (vocals, bass guitar); Colin McGinniss (guitar); David Wagenschutz (drums). Audio Mixer: J. Robbins. Recording information: Phase, College Park, MD (09/2004). Paint It Black continue to kick the old-school hardcore on their Jade Tree release, Paradise. This time around, though, Paint It Black release a lot of the tension throughout the album with a reliance on melodic sensibilities -- guitar and vocal lines with interesting half-time chumpdowns -- which may be a result of Paradise being produced and recorded by J. Robbins. These are introspective songs of identity against a backdrop of global breakdown and corporate manipulation. Paint It Black offer up fast beats, thick chords, and passionate lyrics on Paradise, and shine on tracks with vocal exchanges between Dan Yemin and Andy Nelson, such as "Pink Slip," "Athiests in Foxholes," and "Labor Day." Paint It Black have always had a good sense of keeping the good fight going with passion and rage in their lyrics and delivery, while mixing in memorable musical elements. Paradise will make you get up, think about your situation, and fight for better days. ~ David Serra

"Black Dots" (10/01/1996) Hardcore/Punk Bad Brains, Caroline DistributionBLACK DOTS is also known as THE ZIENTARA SESSIONS. It documents Bad Brains' first studio recording session. Bad Brains: HR (vocals); Dr. Know (guitar); Darryl (bass); Earl (drums). Recorded at Inner Ear Studios, Arlington, Virginia in June 1979. Includes liner notes by Anthony Countey. In the late '70's and early '80s, the Bad Brains recorded many of their best hardcore/ska compositions several times. Different versions of the same songs appeared on such albums as the band's self-titled debut, ROCK FOR LIGHT, OMEGA SESSIONS, and BLACK DOTS. Although the sessions were recorded in June of 1979, BLACK DOTS was not officially released until 1996. Like the aforementioned releases, BLACK DOTS includes such Bad Brains classics as "Don't Need It," "Regulator," "Banned In D.C.," and "Attitude." But there are also plenty of songs here that aren't available anywhere else ("Why'd You Have to Go?," "The Man Won't Annoy Ya," "Redbone in the City," etc.), making BLACK DOTS an essential purchase for longtime Bad Brains fans.

"Let It Bloom" (11/22/2005) Oldies Black Lips, In The Red RecordsBlack Lips: Ian St. Pe, Cole Younger (vocals, guitar); Jered Swilley (vocals, bass guitar); Joe Bradley (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Vanessa Gonzalez (accordion, piano); Simon Shrine (trumpet). Genuine danger in music is all too rare. And although the members of Black Lips themselves aren't too frightful, their tunes--and the dark, anarchic vibes they generate--do intimidate. The title LET IT BLOOM, from a band that calls their music "flower punk," might imply a gentle crossover record, like John Denver covering now-mainstreamed punk standards, but the Atlanta band's sloppy brew is too rambunctious and wobbly too be pinned down. Electric blues, country, garage, and punk are all here. The album highlight, "Hippie Hippie Hooray," channels both "House of the Rising Sun" and "Paint It Black" as Cole Alexander laughs through a thick fog of reverb over snake-charmer guitars, tambourine, and a random series of false endings. "Boomerang" is blues jangle a la SORRY MA-era Replacements, while "Punk Slime" holds true to its name. Black Lips are one of the few bands that can honestly claim to be keeping the spirit of rock & roll alive, and LET IT BLOOM is their best single slab of evidence to that effect.

"Black Leather Girl" (06/13/2000) Hardcore/Punk Abrasive Wheels, Captain Oi! Records (UK)Recorded at Strawberry Studios, 1984's Black Leather Girl was Leeds Oi! band Abrasive Wheels' second album, and found the band maturing rapidly. Soaring vocal harmonies, saxophones, and smooth arrangements characterize a record that, though it remains unmistakably abrasive, also packs a glossy edge that suggested future recordings might even verge on mainstream rock. Of course that was not to be, and Black Leather Girl stands as the last will and testament of a band that really deserved a longer life. The band's key energies remain intact, of course. The rhythms might not be quite as frenetic as they were across When the Punks Go Marching In, but they pulsate all the same, with the title track an especially incendiary slab of post-Oi! brilliance. The contagiously melodic single "The Prisoner," too, sparkles, while the Wheels' take on "Jailhouse Rock" could incite a riot in a monastery. Five bonus tracks on the Captain Oi! reissue include single mixes of "The Prisoner," "Jailhouse Rock," and "Black Leather Girl," plus the B-side "Sonic Omen" and the stand-alone 45 "Banner of Hope." All add up to the band's most fulfilled release ever. ~ Dave Thompson

"Art Offensive" (05/20/2003) Hardcore/Punk Black Cross, Equal VisionBlack Cross: Rob Pennington (vocals); Ryan Patterson (guitar, background vocals); Evan Patterson (bass, background vocals); Thommy Browne (drums). Recorded at VML Studio, Louisville, Kentucky in December 2002. Personnel: Ryan Patterson, Evan Patterson (vocals, guitar); Peter Searcy (vocals, cello); J. Robbins (vocals, shaker, tambourine); Stephen George, Chris Higdon, Rob Pennington (vocals); Thommy Browne (drums). Audio Mixer: J. Robbins. Recording information: VML, Louisville, KY (12/06/2002-12/15/2002). Photographer: James Case. Ever since the too-brief reign of the great Squirrel Bait, Louisville, KY, has always been a place where punky aggression and cerebral artsiness have coexisted. (Remember that the Squirrel Bait offshoot Slint, who single-handedly invented the entire post-rock concept, were from Louisville). The first full-length by Black Cross continues this tradition, although they're closer to the Squirrel Bait tradition (they even have Squirrel Bait's singer, Peter Searcy, offering backing vocals and cello) than to the more wide-ranging groups that followed. These 12 brief songs -- not a one breaks the three-minute barrier, and the whole album's over in barely 26 minutes -- are short, sharp, shocks of hardcore aggro-thrash; all buzzsaw guitars and whiplash start-stop rhythms that occasionally veer into unexpected directions and time signatures. There's a vague pop sensibility to several songs, particularly the H?sker D?-like "Black Market Cigarettes" and "Gift to the SBA," and singer Rob Pennington is adept at shifting from a hoarse bark to a more melodic croon that at times recalls, of all people, Howard Devoto in the very early days of the Buzzcocks. Art Offensive is an enjoyable mix of pop, punk and noise that suggests even better things to come. ~ Stewart Mason

"I Can See You [EP]" (05/05/1992) Hardcore/Punk Black Flag (Punk), SSTBlack Flag: Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Kira (bass); Bill Stevenson (drums). Recorded at Total Access Studios, Redondo Beach, California. Personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Bill Stevenson (drums). Recording information: Total Access Studios, Redondo B. I CAN SEE YOU is a surprising 1989 release of four songs recorded four or five years earlier, sometime before Black Flag's somewhat acrimonious breakup in 1986. There're no annotations, but the songs and production suggest that the tracks are outtakes from the band's final studio recording, 1985's IN MY HEAD. The EP's highlight, the uncommonly good-natured shuffle "Kickin' and Stickin'," had previously appeared on the soundtrack CD--also released on SST--of Dave Markey's 1987 underground feature LOVEDOLLS SUPERSTAR. The other three songs aren't groundbreaking additions to the Black Flag canon, but they're at least as good as most of what appeared on the band's last few albums, particularly the blues-based thud of "You Let Me Down." An unexpected but welcome coda to this prolific band's output.

"The Process of Weeding Out [EP]" (04/14/1998) Hardcore/Punk Black Flag (Punk), SSTBlack Flag: Greg Ginn (guitar); Kira (bass); Bill Stevenson (drums). Produced by Greg Ginn, Bill Stevenson, Dave Tarling. Recorded at Total Access, Redondo, California. Includes liner notes by Greg Ginn. Personnel: Greg Ginn (guitar); Bill Stevenson (drums). Recording information: Total Access. Illustrator: Raymond Pettibon. An experiment in style released in the midst of Black Flag's most creative and productive era, THE PROCESS OF WEEDING OUT is a four-song EP of varied instrumentals recorded by Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn, bassist Kira Roessler, and drummer Bill Stevenson without the participation of singer Henry Rollins. The title track had previously appeared on the LIVE '84 release, but this studio take is less frenzied, though no less powerful. The jazz-tinged "Your Last Affront" is a showcase for Roessler's remarkably melodic playing, whereas the near-hardcore "Screw the Law" and the bluesy "Southern Rise" are platforms for Ginn's lengthy, freeform guitar solos. The results are considerably more interesting than you might expect, but if you're a Black Flag fan mostly for Rollins' voice and lyrics, you might want to pass.

"Jealous Again [EP]" (11/01/1991) Hardcore/Punk Black Flag (Punk), SSTBlack Flag: Chavo Pederast (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Charles Dukowski (bass); Robo (drums). Recorded at Media Art Studio, Hermosa Beach, California. Personnel: Chavo Pederast (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Robo (drums). Recording information: Media Art studio, Hermosa Beach, CA. Black Flag's second EP, 1980's JEALOUS AGAIN finds the band with a new lead singer, Chavo, whose Everypunk vocals were less distinctive than those of his predecessor, future Circle Jerks frontman Keith Morris, but perhaps better suited to guitarist Greg Ginn's unpretentious anthems of punk life. The five speedy and short songs on JEALOUS AGAIN are practically the archetypes of hardcore punk. Where the songs on NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, the band's 1978 debut, were beholden to British punk tropes, these more streamlined songs are harder, faster, louder, and considerably more powerful. For those looking for value, all five songs from JEALOUS AGAIN, plus the band's first and third EPs, two compilation tracks, and a single, are contained on the CD entitled THE FIRST FOUR YEARS.

"Family Man" (n/a) Hardcore/Punk Black Flag (Punk), SSTBlack Flag: Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Kira (bass); Bill Stevenson (drums). Personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Bill Stevenson (drums). Liner Note Author: Harvey Robert Kubernik. Unknown Contributor Role: Black Flag . Sleeved in a controversial Raymond Pettibon drawing of a man with a gun to his temple standing near the dead bodies of his wife and child, FAMILY MAN is possibly the oddest of Black Flag's many releases. Recorded in 1984, as the band was abandoning punk for a sort of jazz- and hardcore-tinged version of heavy metal, the album literally splits the band into two halves. Side one is a collection of unaccompanied poetry readings and spoken-word pieces by Henry Rollins, who at the time was just beginning his long career as a poet/essayist. The pieces are a combination of sociopolitical broadsides, many of which are punctuated with disturbing images, and wry, self-deprecating, and humorous bits of the kind he would continue to explore in his non-musical work in the future. Side two is made up of instrumentals by the rest of Black Flag, drummer Bill Stevenson, bassist Kira Roessler, and guitarist Greg Ginn, whose metal-edged solos dominate the varied-length songs.

"Damaged" (10/25/1990) Hardcore/Punk Black Flag (Punk), SSTPersonnel: Henry Rollins (vocals); Dez Cadena (guitar, background vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Charles Dukowski (bass); Robo (drums). Personnel: Dez Cadena (vocals, guitar); Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Robo (drums). Photographer: Ed Colver. Perhaps the quintessential California punk band, and one of the founding fathers of hardcore, Black Flag is to America what the Sex Pistols are to the U.K. DAMAGED is the band's most loved album, featuring some of its best-known songs. Though the group's speedy, full-frontal assault laid the groundwork for the faster-and-louder generation of punks to come, the guitar interplay of Greg Ginn and Dez Cadena is still melodic, and often even hook-filled. The songs, delivered in an impassioned rant by a young Henry Rollins, are classic Cal-punk, mocking American complacency ("Six Pack," "TV Party") with a winning combination of anger and satire, as well as an ingratiating sense of structure. Also included on the disc is the early, pre-Rollins EP JEALOUS AGAIN, on which the band similarly rages against the machine, though the attack is a bit less refined. DAMAGED is an American punk classic, and the cornerstone of any punk collection.
