"Archetype [PA]" (04/20/2004) Heavy Metal Fear Factory, Liquid 8Fear Factory: Burton C. Bell (vocals); Christian Olde Wolbers (guitar); John Bechdel (keyboards); Byron Stroud (bass guitar); Raymond Herrera (drums). Additional personnel: Rhys Fulber, Steve Tushar (keyboards, programming, electronics). As influential originators of a revolutionary and oft-copied hybrid of metal and industrial dance music, Fear Factory is one of the few groups that could release an album entitled ARCHETYPE without a hint of self-aggrandizement. The music contained within lives up to the disc's name, but the band also continues to evolve, expanding its sound without making the slightest concession to music-industry pressure or prevailing trends. Despite the absence of guitarist/founding member Dino Cazares (who left the group before this record), Fear Factory sounds tighter and more ferocious than ever, kicking out robotic, skull-crunching grooves with superhuman efficiency. In many places, the group tempers its sonic onslaught with melodic choruses and surprisingly clean guitar effects, occasionally sounding like an unlikely jam between early Depeche Mode and TEST FOR ECHO-era Rush. The album finishes off with a gorgeous ambient instrumental track and a Nirvana cover ("School"), making clear that despite ARCHETYPE's title, Fear Factory will never be content to stick with the original model.

"14 Shades of Grey [PA]" (06/17/2003) Heavy Metal Staind, Elektra EntertainmentThis limited-edition of 14 SHADES OF GREY includes a bonus DVD featuring a home-movie documentary of the band's history. This is a Hyper CD which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Staind: Aaron Lewis (vocals); Mike Mushok (guitar); Johnny "Old School" April (bass); Jon Wysocki (drums). This is a DVD-Audio disc. The DVD-Audio content can only be read by a DVD-Audio player. The Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS audio tracks provided on this disc will play on a standard DVD player. While many bands lumped under the nu-metal banner seem to rely on angry posturing and shock tactics to sell records, Staind has quietly and consistently topped the sales and radio charts with a stripped-down and emotionally direct approach devoid of gimmickry. On the group's third album 14 SHADES OF GREY, singer Aaron Lewis and crew deliver a distinctly organic-sounding, mature disc that still manages to rock like a wild beast. Powered by the pile-driving yet earthy rhythm section of bassist Johnny April and drummer Jon Wysocki, Staind stands head and shoulders above many of its contemporaries by mixing de-tuned thrash with an old-school rock & roll kick. There's a touch of bluesy Led Zeppelin mixed in with the angst, and the band's subtle sexiness serves to temper Lewis's darker melodic and lyrical instincts. Featuring songs that address everything from the joyous birth of the singer's daughter ("Zoe Jane") to the tragic death of Alice In Chains vocalist Layne Staley ("Layne"), 14 SHADES OF GREY is an unquestionably adult album created by a band at once deafeningly heavy and clearly more concerned with making art than scaring parents. DVD Features: Region 0 Super Jewel Case Plus Audio: 24 Bit/96 Khz PCM Stereo - English 24 Bit/48 Khz Dolby Digital 5.1 - English

"Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 [Edited]" (10/05/2004) Heavy Metal Korn, Epic (USA)Initial pressings includes bonus DVD. Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipe); Brian Welch, James Shaffer (guitar); Fieldy (bass guitar); David Silveria (drums). GREATEST HITS VOL. 1 is a 17-track primer for Korn, a key force behind the "nu metal" tsunami that swept through pop music in the mid-to-late 1990s. Led by frontman (and former coroner's assistant) Jonathan Davis, these California natives weave low-tuned guitars, hip-hop-fueled bass lines, and bleak imagery into memorable songs like the bile-fueled stomp-fest "Right Now," goth-tinged "Alone I Break," and frenetically raw "Freak on a Leash." Davis's struggle with family dysfunction is a consistent theme, from the band's self-titled 1994 debut (a foreboding "Clown"), right up through 2003's TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR (an uber-heavy "Did My Time"). Korn also keeps pace with peers Marilyn Manson and Limp Bizkit (who both recorded unlikely covers) by adding a pair of new tracks--a faithful reading of Cameo's "Word Up!" and, in keeping with their anti-authoritarian bent, a slight tweaking of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1, 2, 3)." Fleshing out this package is a glimpse into the Korn concert experience via a DVD of a performance at New York City's CBGB, recorded in November of 2003.

After THE UNTOUCHABLES, Korn can never again be accused of sounding like Limp Bizkit. Though in the past, they've often been lumped in with the likes of the Biz due to their penchant for mixing hip-hop and heavy metal, UNTOUCHABLES represents a step forward. Part of the reason may be the involvement of producer Michael Bienhorn, who old-timers will recall as a founding member of early-'80s avant rock/funk/jazz outfit Material. Whether its Bienhorn's influence or just the band's desire to progress (we're betting on a combo of both), the songs here are full of carefully delineated and sung melodies (though Jonathan Davis's sore throat from hell won't bring Frank Sinatra to mind any time soon). The attack of the guitars and drums is just as unrelenting as before, but the expanded song structures and grooves (somebody's been listening to early Killing Joke) will put the lie to all the naysayers who consigned these guys to the nu-metal scrapheap in the past. "A Crow Left of the Murder... [Limited]" (02/03/2004) Heavy Metal Incubus, Epic/ImmortalIncludes bonus DVD. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Incubus: DJ Kilmore, Mike Einziger, Ben Kenney, Jose Antonio Pasillas II, Brandon Boyd. In 2003, after successfully renegotiating their contract with Epic, Incubus struggled further in parting ways with bassist Dirk Lance. When a proven lineup has a successful chemistry, there is always the danger of tampering with that magic when a personnel change occurs. Luckily, Incubus dodged that bullet and struck gold with four-stringer Ben Kenney (Roots/Blackalicious). The requisite elements that Incubus fans have come to expect are firmly in place on A CROW LEFT OF THE MURDER, with the up-tempo bombast of "Megalomaniac" and "Beware? Criminal," the softer dynamics of "Southern Girl," and radio-friendly "Talk Shows On Mute." What may come as a surprise are the jazzy, proggy moments. In that light, some nods to Rush crop up, as with the chorus of the title track, "Agoraphobia" and the extended instrumental section of "Pistola." Guitarist Mike Einziger offers up plenty of quirky, interesting guitar work, especially in "Sick, Sad Little World" and "Priceless." CROW stands as an evolved statement of intent for Incubus, and a promise that the sky's the limit for this bird of flight.

"The Curse" (06/28/2005) Hardcore/Punk Atreyu, Victory Records (USA)Atreyu: Brandon Saller (vocals, drums); Alex Varkatzas (vocals); Dan Jacobs , Travis Miguel (guitar); Marc McKnight (bass guitar). With the release of the SoCal metalcore outfit Atreyu's sophomore album, it's time again to embrace Brandon Saller's galloping kick drum triplets and Alex Varkatzas's throat-shredding guttural lead vocals. THE CURSE expands mightily on the promise and power of their debut, SUICIDE NOTES AND BUTTERFLY KISSES. The loneliness and seclusion of life on the road (SUICIDE NOTES sold nearly a million copies, leading to the inevitable year-long tour and separation from friends and loved ones) here brings forth an explosion of creativity. THE CURSE's opening salvo of "Bleeding Mascara" is closely followed by the morbid imagery of "This Flesh a Tomb", while the headlong metal rush of "You Eclipsed By Me" is best felt, not heard, at full ear-crushing volume. "My Sanity on the Funeral Pyre" again references the results of the band's aforementioned debilitating tour schedule, but when enforced seclusion begets a set of songs this good it's hard to resist the thought that Atreyu's punishing work ethic may not be such a bad thing for their music.

"For the Sake of Revenge" (04/04/2006) Heavy Metal Sonata Arctica, Nuclear Blast Records (USA)Sonata Arctica: Tony Kakko (vocals); Jani Liimatainen (guitar, background vocals); Henrik Klingenberg (keyboards, background vocals); Marko Paasikoski (bass guitar, background vocals); Tommy Portimo (drums). At first it may seem a little ludicrous for Finland's Sonata Arctica to be releasing the second live album of their career, with only four studio full-lengths (and a smattering of EPs) from which to populate their set list, but you won't hear their die-hard fans complaining. After all, these power metal champions don't have many casual fans; just outright haters or devoted followers for whom their rarely wavering sonic template and scientifically orchestrated stage show simply can't be improved upon. (Keep in mind that, like most of their melodically inclined Euro metal brethren, Sonata Arctica's stage show is essentially comprised of a scaled down reenactment of Iron Maiden's format, where meticulous musicianship seems to take precedence over spontaneity more often than not.) This is why the Fin's can get away with alternating their fast and slow numbers, almost without fail, and their fans seem to eat it right up! Heck, For the Sake of Revenge almost feels like a case study for this technique, as the audience is alternately buffeted with hurricane winds generated by the countless sixteenth notes and double kick drums contained in "Misplaced," "8th Commandment," "Black Sheep," and their like; or stranded in the dead calm surrounding majestic trad metal anthems and power ballads such as "Blinded No More," "Broken," and "Graven Image." Death and black metal fans will of course get nothing out of this release (let's see them maintain a straight face as the band launches into the amazingly irony-free "Victoria's Secret"!), but For the Sake of Revenge is tailor-made for Sonata Arctica's unquestioning power metal devotees. "Themeaddict: WWE the Music, Vol. 6 [Bonus DVD]" (11/16/2004) Heavy Metal Original Soundtrack, Columbia (USA)This includes a bonus DVD. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. As the composer behind entrance themes for the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, formerly the World Wrestling Federation) for more than two decades, Jim Johnston came a long way from the days of Hulk Hogan's "Real American." In 2004, the WWE released THEMEADDICT, a compilation of Johnston's theme songs that traffics in a contemporary alt-rock/hip-hop vibe guaranteed to connect with a young audience. Motorhead serves as the elder statesmen on this collection with "Line in the Sand," a song that gives wrestling star Evolution a sinister leg up, thanks to a combination of Lemmy's growl and some sinewy guitar playing. Although there are other metal-tinged tunes, the mix offers a surprisingly dynamic selection of musical styles. "Chavito Ardiente" is a crisp bit of mariachi-inflected pop used by Chavo Guerrero. John Cena even goes as far as to incorporate a sample of Big Daddy Kane's "Any Type of Way" amidst the crisp flow of "Untouchables." Leavening the mood is Gail Kim's lush dance theme "International Woman." For those craving a visual element, a bonus DVD, featuring numerous videos, is included.

"When Broken Is Easily Fixed [Bonus Tracks & DVD]" (09/07/2004) Heavy Metal Silverstein (Band), Victory Records (USA)Silverstein: Shane Told (vocals); Neil Boshart, Josh Bradford (guitar); Billy Hamilton (bass); Paul Koehler (drums). Contains 2 bonus tracks. Silverstein (Band): Billy Hamilton (bass guitar); Paul Koehler (drums); Shane Told, Neil Boshart, Josh Bradford. Personnel: Shane Told (vocals, guitar); Kyle Bishop (vocals); Richard McWalter, Neil Boshart, Josh Bradford (guitar). Audio Mixer: Justin Koop. Liner Note Author: Shane Told. Recording information: Mount Fairview (01/2003-02/2003); Unity Gain (01/2003-02/2003). Editor: Doublej. Silverstein's Victory debut is a jarring mixture of emo's earnest determination, elements of hardcore, and the heaviest of heavy metal. While vocalist Shane Told delivers lines like "How can I say I love you back, you never made me happy" in a cracked, soaring singing voice, When Broken Is Easily Fixed actually begins with a ragged scream that's as arresting as his singing is plaintive. Musically, the LP is dominated by the dynamic shifts and driving melodies of emo. But Silverstein's membership was derived from existing hardcore, metal, and punk squads, and these influences are never very far from view. "Last Days of Summer" begins as a June day ends, with shuffling percussion and gently strummed guitars. But just as the fragile strains of a violin drift in, Told's growling, scarred alter ego appears behind his singing self. The song's structure breaks apart, and re-forms as a churning post-hardcore anthem driven by his scarred, screaming id. The track gives way to the scathing hardcore of "Bleeds No More," but even its furious rhythms aren't safe from Silverstein's experimental touch -- its bridge features an atmospheric interlude complete with programming and additional violin. Things get even more bipolar with "The Weak and the Wounded," on which Told's two sides duet before the track bursts through the storm clouds into a gliding chorus. But all is not well. "Love in my eyes, lust in my heart," Told sings, only to sneer finally "I made it all up. Lies, deceit empowers me." When Broken Is Easily Fixed is a rousing, cathartic record that effectively blurs the lines between emo, hardcore, and metal. It drags the listener behind the car on an emotional roller coaster that teeters on rotting wood. "Bite the Hand That Bleeds: And Related Archetypal [EP]" (11/16/2004) Heavy Metal Fear Factory, Liquid 8This release includes a bonus DVD. Fear Factory: Christian Olde Wolbers, Raymond Herrera, Burton C. Bell. In 2004, Fear Factory returned from the brink of breakup with the remarkable Archetype LP, which combined femur-snapping, mechanized death metal ragers with swirling, gothic melodies for some of most fully imagined work of their career. Bite the Hand That Bleeds features the title single -- one of the album's more powerfully melodic tracks -- as well as a wealth of video content. There are clips for "Bite the Hand" and "Cyberwaste," as well as three versions of "Archetype" -- the original, a formerly Japan-only remix, and a live performance. The set also comes with a fold-out poster of Archetype's spooky cover art. ~ Johnny Loftus

"Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses" (02/24/2004) Heavy Metal Atreyu, Victory Records (USA)Atreyu: Alex Varkatzas (vocals); Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel (guitar); Chris Thomson (bass); Brandon Saller (drums). Additional personnel: Efrem Shulz (vocals); Andrea Shulz, Jaime Boepple (piano). Initial pressings included a bonus DVD featuring live performances and behind-the-scenes footage. Atreyu: Alex Varkatzas (vocals); Dan Jacobs, Travis Miguel (guitar); Chris Thomson (bass); Brandon Saller (drums). Additional personnel: Efrem Shulz (vocals); Andrea Shulz, Jaime Boepple (piano). Personnel: Alex Varkatzas (vocals); Dan Jacobs , Travis Miguel (guitar, electric guitar); Jaime Boepple (piano); Chris Thomson (bass guitar); Brandon Saller (drums). Audio Mixer: Eric Rachel. Recording information: Death Tracks; Trax East, South River, NJ. Illustrator: Justin Borucki. By the time Atreyu's 2002 debut full-length SUICIDE NOTES AND BUTTERFLY KISSES was released, they'd already built a devoted following in their native Orange County, California, with their polished yet punishing brand of metalcore. An EP, FRACTURES IN THE FACADE OF YOUR PORCELAIN BEAUTY, had established the band's sonic blueprint, and Atreyu reworked three songs from the EP to place among the newer material on SUICIDE NOTES. The group's hallmarks-furiously churning riffs, double-bass thunder, and tortured screamo vocals-arrive fully formed here. Titles like "Living Each Day Like You're Already Dead" and "Someone's Standing On My Chest" suggest lead singer and lyricist Alex Vartkatzas's penchant for violent psychological anguish and anger, feelings reinforced by the brutal nature of the music. The singles "Ain't Love Grand" and "Lip Gloss and Black" are album highlights, not least for their melodic choruses sung by drummer Brandon Saller, but there isn't a weak track on the disc. Atreyu would go on to refine their unique sound, but this is the album that started it all, and it's still one of their best.

"Live in Canada 2005: The Dark Secret" (01/31/2006) Heavy Metal Rhapsody, SPVRhapsody: Fabio Lione (vocals); Dominique Leurquin, Luca Turilli (guitar); Alex Staropoli (keyboards); Patrice Guers (bass instrument); Alex Holzwarth (drums). If there had never been such a thing as punk rock, there's a fair chance that the majority of hard rock music could have ended up being of the bombastic variety -- loaded with "dungeons and dragons" lyric imagery and complex/symphonic instrumentation. And that is exactly the style that the Italian sextet Rhapsody specialize in. In other words, depending on your musical tastes, Rhapsody are either the saviors of rock or a relic from a time best forgotten. Either way, Rhapsody continue on their path of musically creating the perfect Lord of the Rings soundtrack on their first-ever concert set, 2006's Live in Canada 2005: The Dark Secret. A double-disc set (one CD, one DVD), Live in Canada 2005 manages to feature all the Rhapsody favorites, including "Emerald Sword," "Dawn of Victory," and "The March of the Swordmaster." For fans of prog metal loaded with superhuman playing/singing and lyrics straight out of medieval times, Live in Canada 2005: The Dark Secret is a must-hear. You could say that if Manowar didn't sport furry loincloths, were not as menacing, and were more "technical" with their playing, they would not sound far off from Rhapsody. That said, it shouldn't come as a surprise then that founding Manowar member Joey DeMaio is part of Rhapsody's management team, and serves as the album's executive producer. ~ Greg Prato

"Next [PA] [Limited]" (10/11/2005) Heavy Metal Sevendust, Winedark RecordsInitial pressings includes Limited Edition DVD. Sevendust: Lajon (vocals); John, Sonny (guitar); Vince (bass instrument); Morgan (drums). Alternative metal outfit Sevendust weathered the departure of their founding guitarist and a label change before releasing NEXT in 2005, but the changes haven't affected the band's take on hardcore riffage, thunderous rhythms, and alternately soulful and screamo vocals courtesy of frontman Lajon Witherspoon. Witherspoon, one of the group's most distinguishing features, can make his voice soar and slide, at times recalling Mike Patton, and then turn around to sound like the most ferocious of hardcore growlers. NEXT also broadens the band's stylistic palette by adding electronic balladry ("This Life") and the occasional surprisingly melodic chorus ("Desertion"), while never losing sight of the razory, metallic edge on which the group's sound is built.
