"This Is '80s Hair Metal" (06/10/2003) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Dead Line MusicAn odd three-disc set from Deadline, This Is '80s Hair Metal isn't nearly as definitive as its title implies. Subtitled "Studio Fuelled," the first disc in the set features what must be re-recordings -- Quiet Riot's "Cum on Feel the Noize," Warrant's "Cherry Pie," the Bulletboys' "Smooth Up," and Pretty Boy Floyd's "Leather Boyz With Electric Toyz" are featured; honestly, some die-hard fans might prefer these mostly beefy and energetic newer versions over the originals, since the production values on some of the originals haven't aged well. The second disc, subtitled "Live and Dangerous," is all live, including performances from the likes of Cinderella, Lita Ford, Dangerous Toys, L.A. Guns, Great White, and Saigon Kick; they're of no known origin, and the sound quality is all over the place, while the venues seem to range from packed auditoriums to grubby sheds. The third disc is a mixed bag of ballads, most of which are also re-recordings of the originals; a good chunk of the content on this disc is live as well. Though the set will be enjoyable for some, the packaging loses points for being so misleading. ~ Andy Kellman

"More '80s Hair Metal [Box]" (08/03/2004) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Dead Line MusicPhotographer: William Hames. As if the first installment weren't enough, Cleopatra unleashes another triple-disc hard rock set of questionable origin with More '80s Hair Metal. Like its predecessor, This Is '80s Hair Metal, the CDs are separated into three sections. There's "Studio Fuelled," which features what appears to be re-recorded tracks of "classic" metal anthems by the artists -- sometimes -- who composed them; "Live & Dangerous," which focuses on obscure tracks by bands like Saigon Kick and Junkyard that were probably recorded in the last few years at a bowling alley; and "Power Ballads," a collection of Bic lighter-inspired breast-flashers that also sound suspiciously like re-recorded tracks of songs that the label couldn't get the rights to. In the tray beneath the useless liner notes is an insert advertising a new band called the Numb Ones -- who just happen to appear at the end of disc two with a "live bonus track." Listeners who enjoy being used and manipulated will no doubt send this remarkable series into multiple pressings. ~ James Christopher Monger

The disc really has a nice '80s metal texture to it, and that is statement is made in the best way. There are a number of Kiss leanings on this album, but that is certainly not the extent of these guys' tricks. Indeed, they have created a sound all their own, nestled in among the sounds of such bands as Kiss. They certainly don't run from that link either, covering a lesser-known Kiss number and turning it into a bit of a medley of that legendary band. The lineup on this disc is Ryan Cook, Mike Dupke, Boot, and John A. Sepetys. ~ Gary Hill
