"Greatest Hits 1970-1978 [Remaster]" (03/14/2006) Rock & Pop Black Sabbath, Rhino Records (USA)Black Sabbath: Geezer Butler (bass guitar); Bill Ward (drums, percussion); Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi. Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals, harmonica); Tony Iommi (guitar); Gerald Woodruffe (keyboards); Billy Ward (drums, percussion). Audio Mixers: Tony Iommi; Robin Black . Audio Remasterers: Dan Hersch; Bill Inglot. Liner Note Author: Don Kaye. Recording information: Criteria Studios, Miami, FL; Island Studios, London, England; Morgan Studios, London & Brussels; Regent Sound, London, England; Sound Interchange, Toronto, Canada; The Records Plant, Los Angeles, CA. Photographers: Robert Ellis ; Richard Upper; Ross Halfin; Bob Gruen; Fin Costello; Barry Plummer. Arranger: Gerald Woodruffe. Black Sabbath's 1975 greatest-hits album, WE SOLD OUR SOULS FOR ROCK & ROLL, may very well be the best single-volume compilation ever released that focuses on a band in its prime . It would seem nearly impossible to top, but Rhino's GREATEST HITS 1970-78 may have done just that. The uninspired title aside, GREATEST HITS is an essential document if for no other reason than, unlike SOLD OUR SOULS, it encompasses the band's entire run with the Ozzman at the helm, featuring songs from 1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and '78's NEVER SAY DIE. While "Dirty Women," Rock 'n' Roll Doctor," and "Never Say Die" can't compete with earlier Sabbath classics (including axed S.O.S. cuts "Fairies Wear Boots" and "Tomorrow's Dream") they're solid tracks that help to create a complete picture of the band up to Ozzy's departure in 1979. In addition to the aforementioned songs, GREATEST HITS also adds VOL. 4's blistering "Supernaut," an undisputed metal masterpiece. While SOLD OUR SOULS will always be the heavyweight champ of hits collections, GREATEST HITS 1970-78 is a can't-miss set for fans of Ozzy-era Sabbath.

"Prince of Darkness [Box]" (03/22/2005) Rock & Pop Osbourne, Ozzy, Epic (USA)Includes a 60 page book. Arrangers: Dweezil Zappa; Steve Dudas. Released nearly three decades after Ozzy Osbourne departed Black Sabbath, 2005's PRINCE OF DARKNESS represents the first attempt at encompassing Osbourne's solo career in a box-set format. In the thoroughly entertaining liner notes, Osbourne admits that he was skeptical about taking this record company-prodded step, agreeing to the project only when allowed to fulfill a longtime musical goal--to record an album's worth of cover tunes. The first two discs of this collection are divided between studio cuts, live recordings, and numerous demos of many bright spots in the Osbourne canon, including "Mr. Crowley," "Goodbye to Romance," and, of course, "Crazy Train." The third disc is a compilation of the Ozzman's non-album sessions, ranging from Sabbath standards with Therapy? ("Iron Man") and Primus ("N.I.B.") to a surprisingly low-key Motorhead collaboration ("I Ain't No Nice Guy"), a head-scratching duet with Miss Piggy ("Born to Be Wild"), and a previously unreleased romp through the disco smash "Stayin' Alive," with Dweezil Zappa. The highlight of the set, however, may be the newly recorded fourth disc. Here Ozzy pays homage to his heroes--including John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix--and contemporaries such as David Bowie and King Crimson. (Osbourne's unexpected take on Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man" is particularly fierce.) For Ozzy fans, the 52-track PRINCE OF DARKNESS is a must-have collection.

"Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 [Edited]" (10/05/2004) Heavy Metal Korn, Epic (USA)Initial pressings includes bonus DVD. Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipe); Brian Welch, James Shaffer (guitar); Fieldy (bass guitar); David Silveria (drums). GREATEST HITS VOL. 1 is a 17-track primer for Korn, a key force behind the "nu metal" tsunami that swept through pop music in the mid-to-late 1990s. Led by frontman (and former coroner's assistant) Jonathan Davis, these California natives weave low-tuned guitars, hip-hop-fueled bass lines, and bleak imagery into memorable songs like the bile-fueled stomp-fest "Right Now," goth-tinged "Alone I Break," and frenetically raw "Freak on a Leash." Davis's struggle with family dysfunction is a consistent theme, from the band's self-titled 1994 debut (a foreboding "Clown"), right up through 2003's TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR (an uber-heavy "Did My Time"). Korn also keeps pace with peers Marilyn Manson and Limp Bizkit (who both recorded unlikely covers) by adding a pair of new tracks--a faithful reading of Cameo's "Word Up!" and, in keeping with their anti-authoritarian bent, a slight tweaking of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1, 2, 3)." Fleshing out this package is a glimpse into the Korn concert experience via a DVD of a performance at New York City's CBGB, recorded in November of 2003.

"Doom Capital: Maryland DC Heavy Rock Underground" (04/04/2005) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Crucial BlastIf a local music scene is truly hot, it can have an impact internationally. Detroit soul in the '60s, London punk in the late '70s, Prince's Minneapolis school of funk-rock in the '80s, Seattle grunge in the early '90s -- all of those local scenes ended up becoming influential in more than one country. But some local scenes remain a local secret, and that has pretty much been the case with the doom metal/stoner rock scene of Washington, D.C., and its Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Some well-known doom and stoner bands have come out of that area -- Spirit Caravan, for example -- but even so, the scene hasn't received a great deal of national or international acclaim. Assembled by Crucial Blast Records in 2004, Doom Capital: The Maryland/DC Heavy Rock Underground sheds some light on the scene and does so with interesting, if slightly uneven, results. Exactly when D.C.'s doom/stoner scene got started is open to debate; this compilation's informative liner notes assert that it began in the early '70s with a Black Sabbath-influenced outfit called Pentagram. Doom Capital, however, doesn't contain anything from the '70s; most of the bands on this CD were formed in the '90s or early 2000s -- and that is true of Countershaft and Black Manta as well as Carrion, Earthride, Life Beyond, King Valley, and Los Tres Pesados. All of the bands on Doom Capital have some type of Sabbath influence, which is almost obligatory in the doom/stoner/sludge field; other influences on these D.C.-area headbangers can range from Blue Cheer to Queens of the Stone Age. Not everything on Doom Capital is fantastic, but most of the material is at least decent -- and when this 65-minute disc has finished playing, one ends up with a generally favorable impression of the doom/stoner scene in and around the U.S. capital. ~ Alex Henderson

"Big City Nights" (03/23/1998) Rock & Pop Scorpions, Universal Special ProductsLike many budget-line compilations, Rebound's Big City Nights is a haphazard blend of hits and album tracks, but this one has something different. It has a block of four live cuts in the middle that screeches the momentum to halt, especially since the two biggest hits, "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and "Wind of Change," are present only here. The casual fans who are this compilation's target audience will be none too thrilled by this development, but them's the breaks with budget-line discs -- you win some, you lose some. Here, you come to a draw, because there are some good moments amidst the rest of the disc and some audiences may have no problem with the live cuts. It's not particularly satisfying, but it's not a ripoff, either. So, if you buy this, you may not be completely satiated, but you'll come out even-steven -- sort of like Jerry Seinfeld, actually. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Live Bait for the Dead [Limited]" (08/23/2005) Heavy Metal Cradle of Filth, Recall (UK)Cradle Of Filth: Dani Filth, Sarah Jezebel Deva (vocals); Gian Piras, Paul Allender (guitar); Martin Powell (keyboards); Robin Eaglestone (bass); Adrian Erlandsson (drums). Live Bait for the Dead is another in a string of high-quality (and sort of cynical) cash-ins for Cradle of Filth: odds 'n' sods compilation Bitter Suites to Succubi, best-of collection Lovecraft & Witch Hearts, and live DVD Heavy, Left-Handed and Candid all saw the light of day during the three years between studio albums Midian and Damnation and a Day. In fact, those in possession of the aforementioned video will recognize disc one of Live Bait as the exact same live set -- recorded April 11, 2001, at Rock City in Nottingham, England -- which is the centerpiece of the DVD. Sure, it's a high-quality recording, and the performance and set list are impeccable, but it's ultimately redundant, and strictly for fans only. Disc two consists of mainly filler: three remixes of varying degrees of uselessness, two soundcheck recordings, a demo, a curious, tossed-off instrumental track ("Deleted Scenes of a Snuff Princess"), and an entertaining cover of Twisted Sister's "The Fire Still Burns" (originally found on the tribute album Twisted Forever). On the plus side, the CD packaging of Live Bait is gorgeous and intricately designed -- an apparent enticement for Cradle completists and collectors to track down this far-from-essential rehash. ~ John Serba

"Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection" (05/17/2005) Rock & Pop Def Leppard, Island Records (USA)Def Leppard: Joe Elliot (vocals); Pete Willis, Phil Collen, Steve Clark , Vivian Campbell (guitar); Rick Savage (bass guitar); Rick Allen (drums). In the mid-1980s, there were few hard-rock bands as popular as Sheffield, England's Def Leppard. Influenced by the glam rock of Queen, Slade, and the Sweet, the quartet reveled in the style's high-energy elements, while trading the outlandish imagery for a no-frills, denim-clad look that made them even more accessible to the masses. With 1983's PYROMANIA and its delayed follow-up punch, 1987's HYSTERIA, Def Leppard became an international phenomenon, unleashing hit after hit, including the riff-heavy, shout-along singles "Rock of Ages," "Pour Some Sugar on Me," and "Armageddon It." This collection presents every song on the previously released VAULT: GREATEST HITS 1980-1995, along with an entire second disc of additional album tracks, including the AC/DC-like "High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night)" and HYSTERIA's anthemic ode to "Women." Throughout the decades, the group endured its share of upheavals and tragedies--drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a 1985 accident and guitarist Steve Clark died in 1991--but they continued recording into the 21st century (see the 2002 track "Now"), revealing a determination that most of their peers lacked. For fans of '80s hard rock, this 35-track compilation is essential.

"Chronicles [Long Box]" (03/28/2006) Rock & Pop Bon Jovi, MercuryThis triple-CD set features two bona-fide Bon Jovi classics as well as Jon Bon Jovi's 1990 solo album, BLAZE OF GLORY. The latter features guest appearances by Jeff Beck, Elton John, and Little Richard on a selection of Bon Jovi's songs inspired by the movie YOUNG GUNS II. The band's self-titled 1984 debut not only became a blueprint for its later multi-platinum releases, but a definitive work for an entire genre, while 1988's NEW JERSEY is Bon Jovi's pledge of allegiance to its home state, reeking of attitude, emotion, and the need to party.

"Best of Candlebox" (05/23/2006) Rock & Pop Candlebox, MaverickCandlebox: Kevin Martin (vocals, guitar); Peter Klett (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Scott Mercado (hammer dulcimer, drums, percussion); Bardi Martin (upright bass, bass guitar); Dave Krusen (drums, percussion). This best-of understandably takes the bulk of its material from Candlebox's phenomenally successful debut album, which spent over a year on the Billboard chart. The desperation of "You" still sounds effective and the Led Zeppelin-esque "Arrow" retains its frantic energy, while later songs like HAPPY PILLS' "10,000" Horses" and the ballad "Sometimes" display the Seattle band's artistic growth and its search for fresher sonic pastures.

"Morbid Tales/Emperor's Return" (05/21/2002) Heavy Metal Celtic Frost, Noise (USA)Celtic Frost: Tom G. Warrior (vocals, guitar); Martin Ain (bass); Reed St. Mark (drums, percussion); Stephen Priestley (drums). Recorded at Line In Recording Studio, Zurich, Switzerland on April 8-12, 1985. Personnel: Thomas Gabriel Warrior (vocals, guitar, sound effects); Horst Muller (vocals, sound effects); Stephen Priestly (drums, percussion, sound effects); Reed St. Mark (drums, percussion); Martin Eric Ain (sound effects). Audio Mixer: Horst Muller. Audio Remasterer: Walter J.W. Schmid. Liner Note Author: Tom Gabriel Fischer. Recording information: Caet Studio, Berlin, Germany (10/08/1984-04/12/1985); Line In Recording Studio, Zurich, Switzerland (10/08/1984-04/12/1985). Illustrator: Phil Lawrence. Photographer: Sergio Archetti. Arrangers: Horst Muller; Celtic Frost. Virtually unprecedented at the time of its release, Celtic Frost's debut album, MORBID TALES, left a crater on the face of international heavy metal in which bands are still setting up camp today. At a time when the term "Black Metal" referred mostly to an actual album by contemporaries Venom, Celtic Frost helped broaden and define the genre. That said, MORBID TALES--powerful as it is--is not as head-spinningly ambitious as later efforts such as TO MEGA THERION. What it does offer, however, is a snarling buzzsaw attack of dark intensity. Every song on MORBID TALES establishes a formidable groove as vicious as the thrash metal that followed in its wake, but with a punk brutality and indifference to polish. Also, the uncloaked evil of the lyrics, with songs titles like "Visions of Mortality" and "Procreation (Of the Wicked)" set the stage for descendents such as Slayer and Deicide to explore wickedness even further with their own work.

Unfortunately, other than the albums themselves being classics, there are no bonus tracks, no remastering, nor any additional material to speak of. So unless you don't already own these, or prefer to have them stored in a different format than jewel casing, the original single discs might just be the way to go; if anything for the ease of storage. ~ Rob Theakston
