Youth Gone Wild: Heavy Metal Hits of the 80s, Volume 4 by Various Artists (CD - 06/16/1998)
Description:
Rock Of Ages: The Definitive Collection [5/17] *
"Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection" (05/17/2005) Heavy Metal Def Leppard, Island Records (USA)Def Leppard: Joe Elliot (vocals); Pete Willis, Phil Collen, Steve Clark , Vivian Campbell (guitar); Rick Savage (bass guitar); Rick Allen (drums). Recording information: 1980 - 2005. In the mid-1980s, there were few hard-rock bands as popular as Sheffield, England's Def Leppard. Influenced by the glam rock of Queen, Slade, and the Sweet, the quartet reveled in the style's high-energy elements, while trading the outlandish imagery for a no-frills, denim-clad look that made them even more accessible to the masses. With 1983's PYROMANIA and its delayed follow-up punch, 1987's HYSTERIA, Def Leppard became an international phenomenon, unleashing hit after hit, including the riff-heavy, shout-along singles "Rock of Ages," "Pour Some Sugar on Me," and "Armageddon It." This collection presents every song on the previously released VAULT: GREATEST HITS 1980-1995, along with an entire second disc of additional album tracks, including the AC/DC-like "High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night)" and HYSTERIA's anthemic ode to "Women." Throughout the decades, the group endured its share of upheavals and tragedies--drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a 1985 accident and guitarist Steve Clark died in 1991--but they continued recording into the 21st century (see the 2002 track "Now"), revealing a determination that most of their peers lacked. For fans of '80s hard rock, this 35-track compilation is essential.
Greatest Hits Vol. 1 [PA] by Korn (CD - 10/05/2004)
"Greatest Hits Vol. 1 [PA]" (10/05/2004) Heavy Metal Korn, Epic (USA)This release includes a bonus DVD. Korn: Jonathan Davis (vocals, bagpipe); Brian "Head" Welch, James Shaffer (guitar); Fieldy (bass guitar); David Silviera (drums). Recording information: 1994 - 2004. GREATEST HITS VOL. 1 is a 17-track primer for Korn, a key force behind the "nu metal" tsunami that swept through pop music in the mid-to-late 1990s. Led by frontman (and former coroner's assistant) Jonathan Davis, these California natives weave low-tuned guitars, hip-hop-fueled bass lines, and bleak imagery into memorable songs like the bile-fueled stomp-fest "Right Now," goth-tinged "Alone I Break," and frenetically raw "Freak on a Leash." Davis's struggle with family dysfunction is a consistent theme, from the band's self-titled 1994 debut (a foreboding "Clown"), right up through 2003's TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR (an uber-heavy "Did My Time"). Korn also keeps pace with peers Marilyn Manson and Limp Bizkit (who both recorded unlikely covers) by adding a pair of new tracks--a faithful reading of Cameo's "Word Up!" and, in keeping with their anti-authoritarian bent, a slight tweaking of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 1, 2, 3)." Fleshing out this package is a glimpse into the Korn concert experience via a DVD of a performance at New York City's CBGB, recorded in November of 2003.
The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits! [PA] * by Pantera (Metal) (
"The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits! [PA] *" (09/23/2003) Heavy Metal Pantera (Metal), Rhino Records (USA)Includes a bonus DVD. Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Dimebag Darrell (guitar); Rex Brown (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Producers: Terry Date, Vinnie Paul, Dimebag Darrell, Sterling Winfield, Pantera. Compilation producers: John Kirkpatrick, Karen Ahmed, Kim Davis. Includes liner notes by Don Kaye. With its pioneering "power groove" sound, Pantera leapt onto the metal scene of 1990 with the landmark album COWBOYS FROM HELL. The Texan band distinguished itself by offering up a potent mid-tempo version of the typically fast-paced thrash metal style, resulting in a dense, crushing sound that served as a solid foundation for Phil Anselmo's dynamic growl-to-a-falsetto-in-seconds-flat voice. Although this collection only features five tracks from the early-'90s one-two punch of COWBOYS FROM HELL and VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER, it serves as a good introduction to the band's overall output. Pantera's career from the mid-'90s onward is represented by fierce tracks such as "I'm Broken," "Becoming," "5 Minutes Alone," and "I'll Cast a Shadow," as well as covers of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" and Ted Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever."
First Daze Here (The Vintage Collection) by Pentagram (CD - 01/01/2006)
"First Daze Here (The Vintage Collection)" (01/01/2006) Heavy Metal Pentagram, Relapse Records (USA)Pentagram: Bobby Liebling (vocals); Greg Wayne, Vincent McAllister, Geof O'Keefe. Producers includes: Skip Groff, Phillip Knudsen, Mitch Corday, Pentagram, Mayne O'Keefe. Engineers includes: Bill McElroy, Mitcy Corday, Tim Howell. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Though the band's first official album wouldn't be released for over a decade after they first formed, this criminally overlooked Virginia-based Pentagram was an indisputable pioneer of heavy metal. FIRST DAZE HERE, the first of two reissues of the seminal group's lost 1970s output, places the band in its proper historical context and provides a look at its formative stages. Pentagram is in perhaps a slightly less evil mode here, but as tracks such as "Forever my Queen" and "Review Your Choices" show, they are no less blistering, churning out heavy proto-doom that demands a devil horn salute from anyone listening.
Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath (1970-1978) [Box] by Black Sabbath (CD - 04/27/2004)
"Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath (1970-1978) [Box]" (04/27/2004) Heavy Metal Black Sabbath, Rhino Records (USA)This release includes a bonus DVD featuring live footage of Black Sabbath performing "Black Sabbath," "Paranoid," "Iron Man," and "Blue Suede Shoes" on the German television show THE BEAT CLUB. Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Terry "Geezer" Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums). Producers: Rodger Bain, Patrick Meehan, Black Sabbath, Mike Butcher. Recorded between 1972 & 1978. Includes liner notes by Chris Welch and Brian Ives Tim Scanlin. Although Ozzy Osbourne has had a huge cultural impact as both a solo artist and an unlikely TV star, his true legacy lies in the eight albums he recorded with Black Sabbath between 1970 and 1978. Though musical performers in various genres regularly conjured up images of evil (most notably the Rolling Stones on "Sympathy for the Devil"), no act ever actually sounded consistently evil until Sabbath's self-titled first record. The British quartet's sound arrived fully formed, with Tony Iommi's crushing guitar riffs, Geezer Butler's ominous bass lines, and Bill Ward's almost-tribal drumming perfectly complementing Osbourne's haunting vocals. This gorgeously morbid, pitch-black box set chronicles Sabbath's development, including early-'70s tracks such as the doom-laden "Black Sabbath," the powerful anti-military song "War Pigs," and the fierce "Supernaut," all included on one of the group's indisputably influential first four albums. Even though the latter half of the set doesn't always rival the brilliance found on the former, the BLACK BOX, as a whole, reveals a formidable musical force that shaped the entire genre of heavy metal and permanently altered the landscape of rock & roll.

"Monster Magnet's Greatest Hits (+ Bonus CD)" (09/15/2003) Heavy Metal Monster Magnet, A&M Records (Hong Kong)Though they derived their name from a late 1960s Frank Zappa song, Monster Magnet are a fearsome beast of stoner metal. Best of Ballads & Blues by Poison (Metal) (CD - 08/05/2003)
"Best of Ballads & Blues" (08/05/2003) Heavy Metal Poison (Metal), Capitol/EMI RecordsPoison: Bobby Dall, Bret Michaels, Rikki Rockett, C.C. DeVille. Recorded between 1982 & 2000. Of all the hair-metal bands making the rounds in that genre's late-'80s heyday, Poison had a particular penchant for the art of the power ballad. For the uninformed, this is the type of song that often resulted in many Bics being flicked at arena shows and was oftentimes the quickest route to pop success for bands that might otherwise be too heavy for regular airplay. BEST OF BALLADS & BLUES cherry-picks the best bits from these former denizens of the Sunset Strip. Even non-fans will instantly recognize the Meat Loaf-like title "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," and the inevitable late-'80s prom/wedding song "Something to Believe In" (in both regular and previously unreleased acoustic versions). Diehards will swoon over "Until You Suffer Some (Fire and Ice)" and "Theatre of the Soul," from the line-up featuring temporary C.C. Deville replacement Richie Kotzen. Also included is the harmonica-and-piano-adorned "Be the One," featuring temporary guitarist Blues Saraceno, from the long-shelved CRACK A SMILE album later released as CRACK A SMILE?AND MORE! six years after it was originally recorded.
Crack a Smile ...And More! by Poison (Metal) (CD - 03/14/2000)
"Crack a Smile ...And More!" (03/14/2000) Heavy Metal Poison (Metal), Capitol/EMI RecordsPoison: Bret Michaels (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Blues Saraceno (acoustic & electric guitars, piano, background vocals); C.C. DeVille (guitar, background vocals); Bobby Dall (bass, background vocals); Rikki Rockett (drums, percussion, background vocals). Producers: John Purdell, Duane Baron, Tom Werman. Compilation producer: Kevin Flaherty. Engineers: John Purdell, Duane Baron. Recorded at Devonshire Studios, North Hollywood, California from November to December 1994; Conway Studios, Hollywood, California in February 1988; MTV Studios, New York, New York on December 13, 1990. Includes liner notes by Kevin Flaherty. Digitally remastered by Evren Goknar (Capitol Mastering). Recorded in 1994 and subsequently shelved by Capitol, CRACK... finally sees the light of day six years later amid a POISON tour that's drawing commendable numbers. The album picks up where 1993's NATIVE TONGUE left off; it's a bluesy, rootsy, Black Crowes-like disc that follows on from the band's earlier flash 'n' glam period. "Best Thing You Ever Had" and "Be the One" bring harmonica and piano to the forefront, while guitarist Blues Saraceno lives up to his name on "Mr. Smiley" and "That's the Way I Like It." The band goes all-out punk on "Doin' as I Seen on My TV," returning to vintage Poison on "Sexual Thing," and delivering in addition an inebriated version of Dr. Hook's "Cover of the Rolling Stone." Seven bonus tracks of B-sides, rarities and outtakes make this an exceedingly collectable item for Poison fans everywhere. Other highlights include the raucous "Face the Hangman" (from the OPEN UP AND SAY...AAH! sessions), and an acoustic "Talk Dirty to Me" that's surprisingly successful. A fine addition to the Poison catalog, it's better late than never for CRACK A SMILE...AND MORE!
Best of (Chapter One 1997-2004) [PA] by Sevendust (CD - 12/27/2005)
"Best of (Chapter One 1997-2004) [PA]" (12/27/2005) Heavy Metal Sevendust, TVT (USA)This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Recording information: 1997 - 2004. This well-selected 16-song compilation culls material from Sevendust's stint on the TVT label. BEST OF features not only the Atlanta-based heavy-rock band's finest album tracks (including the lumbering "Denial" and the surging "Bender," with the Deftones' Chino Moreno), but a handful of rarities as well (most notably a fierce cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" and a searing rendition of Alice Cooper's "School's Out"). Throughout this set, the group provides blistering guitar work and tight, pummeling rhythms, while frontman Lajon Witherspoon unleashes his dynamic and emotive vocals, reinforcing Sevendust's status as one of the most reliable acts in the nu-metal genre.
